ReelBean Pro
ReelBean Pro is a full-featured movie viewer, editor and converter application for Mac
OS X. ReelBean 2.99 runs on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and ReelBean 3.1 runs on Mac
OS X 10.5 (Leopard). When you download ReelBean from http://www.js8media.com
you get a single dmg file containing versions for both Tiger and Leopard. ReelBean Pro
allows you to play and convert video and audio files of many different formats and per-
form track extraction and editing operations. By upgrading to ReelBean Pro you will be
able to convert videos to many different formats, including QuickTime, MPEG-4, H.264,
Apple TV, iPod, iPhone, mobile phone (3G), AVI and many others. You can upgrade to
ReelBean Pro by selecting the “Buy RealBean Pro...” option in the application menu, or
by visiting the product store site at http://www.js8media.com/store

ReelBean

The free version of ReelBean offers many video features only seen in pro versions of
similar applications. Many different formats of video and audio files can be played by
ReelBean, including the following:

System Requirements
• Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (for ReelBean 2.99)

• Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (for ReelBean 3.1).

Installing
The ReelBean software is distributed as an Internet-enabled disk image. When down-
loaded, Safari will automatically mount the disk image displaying a folder with the follow-
ing files:

1. ReelBean application.

2. Release note text file.

3. User guide.

4. Data sheet.

Drag the ReelBean application icon to your hard drive. The normal place to store it is
the /Applications folder, but it is not required to to be installed there. Then double-click
the ReelBean application to start it up.

Upgrading from ReelBean to ReelBean Pro

After installing ReelBean you will be able to perform all the operations listed in the fea-
ture comparison table on page 3 under the ReelBean column. Upgrading to ReelBean
Pro will allow you to perform additional activities such as converting files from one video
format to another, including converting files to the iPod format. To enable the additional
features you need to purchase a license code. There are two ways to do this:

1. Select the “Buy ReelBean Now...” item from the ReelBean menu in the application.

OR

2. Enter the following URL in your web browser: http://www.js8media.com/store/

When you click on the Buy Now button at the JS8 Media store page you will be taken to
the PayPal web site where you can choose to confirm your purchase option. If you do
so an email will be sent to you containing your ReelBean license code. Open Reel-
Beanʼs registration panel by selecting the “Registration...” option from the ReelBean
menu. Copy and Paste the license code from the email into this panel and click on the
OK button. You should see a message indicating that ReelBean Pro is now activated.
The export features of ReelBean will now be accessible to you, and you will also see in
the About panel that you are running ReelBean Pro. Save a copy of your license code.

Checking for Updates

You can manually check for an updated version of ReelBean by selecting the “Check
For Updates” option from the ReelBean menu. A panel will be displayed informing you
either that a new version has been found and can be downloaded by visiting the JS8
Media web site, or that you are already running the latest version of ReelBean.

If you would like ReelBean to automatically check for a new version each time you start
the application you can set the “auto check for updates” preference. No personal infor-
mation or data from your computer is sent when the software update check is made.

Removing ReelBean
To remove the ReelBean software from your computer simply drag the ReelBean appli-
cation file to the trash folder. Note: this action will not remove any license code you may
have purchased.

Playing Video with ReelBean

ReelBeanʼs video playing controls allow easy opening, playing and navigation of videos.
In addition to the video controls the main window provides a transparency controller (the
T slider) which allows the transparency of the player window to be altered. Movies can
also be paused and restarted by clicking and double-clicking on the video content as itʼs
displayed.

The “i” button allows a panel to be displayed containing information about the playing
video.

Converting Video with ReelBean

The red target button will open a drawer containing a list of the conversion formats
available. The export button at the bottom of the drawer will be enabled if you have
purchased a license code, as described on page 5. Simply select the required format
and click on the export button and the conversion will proceed, accompanied by a pro-
gress bar. The exported file will be placed on your desktop.

Scene Selection with ReelBean

The small arrow button next to the time field allows another drawer to be open display-
ing a selection of scenes evenly-distributed from the length of the video. Double-
clicking on any of these will cause the player to jump to that scene in the video.

Extracting Tracks with ReelBean

Videos normally consist of a number of tracks. Usually these include separate video
and audio tracks, and maybe others such as hint tracks (for streaming videos), text
tracks and others. ReelBean provides a panel which allows you to extract the full track
or any part of a track into a separate file, which will be placed on your desktop.

Editing Movies with ReelBean

ReelBean provides an additional controller for editing movie content.

The Edit menu, as shown above, provides access to a number of editing features.
When the edit controller is displayed, sections of a movie can be selected by positioning
the edit controller playhead at the required start point and then shift-clicking and drag-
ging to highlight the selection section of the movie. The cut, copy, paste and delete
items then operate on the highlighted section. The end of a movie can be trimmed off
by setting the playhead position as required and then selecting the trim to selection op-
tion.

The two Add Audio ... items allow an audio track to be added to a movie. The extract
movie tracks panel could then be used to selected which audio tracks are enabled or
disabled.
