DOES LC CARE AT ALL?

The Pioneer Log Opinion

By now, most folks on campus have heard about the shameful turnout for the event allowing students to meet with several Invisible Children representatives: only about 15 attendees were present, so the visitors were allowed to leave relatively unmolested and without answering too many tough questions about how their organization duped several million people. I find it hard to imagine that this was due to apathy, since the whole Kony debacle raised a shit-storm so violent that the custodians who occasionally encountered it in the library bathroom late at night are still trying to get the stink of controversy out of the walls of Watzek. And

here I was, expecting at least a small riot and possibly a tarring-and-feathering or stoning. It was embarrassing. So who is to blame? Consider, if you will, last Tuesday. The evening clarified for me one of the recurring problems that Lewis & Clark seems to bump into. That night alone saw a continuation of the International Affairs Symposium, a visit from a distinguished poet, the senior dinner and a world music concert, among other things Im probably not aware of. For a place with so many cool things going on, our school really seems to enjoy scheduling everything so that attending one event requires missing five others. But it seems, too, that a majority of students dont really know whats going on when

it comes to extracurriculars anyway. Ive prided myself on glancing from time to time at the TV screen while shuffling into the Bon, and for my efforts Ive gotten to take part in some pretty cool things here, from getting a free bag of expensive coffee by talking to visiting Stumptown reps to having a chance to hear intellectual giants share their pearls with the few gathered to listen. My excitement at having had the opportunity to chat with a famous travel writer or French novelist usually only confounds friends who dont know what Im talking about in the first place. Sometimes peoples ignorance is so hardline-Conservative-esque that I find it impossible to believe that anything other than a determination to condemn the school and blame its poorso that one might justify

getting way too drunk with the same friends as usual and throwing up on the bathroom flooris at the bottom of things. For the scheduling, one inevitably must blame the System, but Im grateful to have found in the course of research done for other, less amusing articles, that the administrative bosses are in the process of discarding the old double-clutch mess for better communication between departments. And yet, were responsible for at least meeting the Man halfway. Its true that sometimes on-campus happenings arent as publicized as they should be, but there are interesting things afoot if you keep your eyes open and maintain a willingness to check your institutional angst from time to time.

Dear Class of 2012, 15 more days until graduation! Can you believe it? 15 more days to enjoy, experience and take in the wonder, the excitement and the community that is Lewis & Clark. It is the hope of the Senior Gift Committee that in these last two weeks you will take time to reflect on your experience. Consider how LC has changed you, challenged you and helped you grow. Who or what made that experience possible? Chances are, some aspect of your experience was made possible by the Annual Fund. Maybe it was your study abroad trip, funding for your senior art project or your advanced physics lab. Perhaps you needed a specific journal for your International Affairs thesis or you appreciated the gift of a scholarship to fund your education. At some point in your LC experience, you have received the benefits of the Annual Fund, and we ask that you give back by participating in the 2012 Senior Gift. You can make your contribution in honor of a person or department that made your time here
