Discivered by an amateur geologist Reverend William Gregor in 1791 (Steward), titanium is a lustrous, white metal when pure. The minerals of titanium are very common in the environment and it is widely distributed in the shell of earth and in lithosphere. Nevertheless, titanium is found everywere on earteh, such as rocks, solids, and water bodies (Titanium). Its density is very low but at the same time it is a very strong metal. Titanium is useful in everyday activities and it is very resistant to corrosion; thus, it is the only element in the periodic table that burns in nitrogen and also in air; however, in fireworks it is a marvellous metal (Winter). Titaniums reaction with water and air is very slow, mainly because of the creation of a passive and protective oxide which protects it from reactions. The titanium dioxide happens in pure oxygen at 610 C (1,130 F), while the chemical reaction with oxygen happened at 1,200 C (2,190 F) in air. Yet, at temperatures of 800 C it can burn in pure nitrogen gas (Titanium). The reason why titanium is positioned on that specific position in periodic table is because of its atomic structure; atomic weight and properties. Titanium is positioned on the 4th period, group 4 which has an atomic weight 22. It occupies the first position in the block of transition metals, which is a common name for all the elements contained by the groups 4 to 12, with each element representing the successive addition of electrons to the "d" atomic orbital of the atoms, but without completely filling this shell (Titanium position in the periodic table of elements). Because it is a very strong metal and has a high resistance to corrosion, this chemical element is used in technological development. Titanium is mainly used in military inventions such as aircrafts, armor planting, marine, missiles, and spacecrafts (Uses of Titanium). However, when converted to titanium oxide it can be found in paint, toothpaste, some kinds of plastics, and also paper. This metal is used for many other things in daily activities (Uses of Titanium). As far as its affect to human body this metal is considered as a non-poison metal, nevertheless it is detected that human body takes about 0.8 mg/day of titanium, but most of the time it is not absorbed (Titanium-Ti).
