Justification of the selected poem.

Narrative poetry is a poem that tells a series of events using poetic devices such as rhythm, rhyme, compact language, and attention to sound. In other words, a narrative poem tells a story, but it does it with poetic flair. (www.pflugervilleisd.netf). Thus, the poem Mrs. Cat that I have chosen is one of a narrative poetry as it tells story. This poem is an edited verse of Mrs. Hen that is contained in year 1 syllabus. My decision to choose this poem is because it is very short as it only has one stanza containing seven lines. From language aspects, the vocabulary and diction use is easy and suitable for primary level. For example, the poet used simple phrases, How many kittens have you got? in the poem. It fulfills some pedagogical principles which are ease to use and coherence and clear. Furthermore, the poet also uses greeting which is Good Evening on the second line. By learning this poem, pupils get the moral value which is respect to each other. When they are seeing each other, they need to greet their friend as a symbol of respectful. The moral value that the pupils get is in line with one of the pedagogical principle which emphasize on values. In addition, through learning narrative poetry, the pupils gain their interest in learning English. This narrative type of poem will attract their interest as it tells interesting story and easy to be understood. Thus, this poem fulfills another one pedagogical principle which is capturing the students interest. The poem also meets the objectives of Curriculum Specification which are to appreciate and demonstrate understanding of English language literary or creative works for enjoyment. The learning standard of year one and two can be achieved through the activity such as reciting poem where the pupils will able to read simple texts with guidance. It fulfills the requirement of the content standard where the pupils will be able to read independently for information and enjoyment by the end of year six. Next, the verse in the poem uses the simple and short sentences. The example can be seen in line 4, Madam, I have got five. Pupils who recite this poem can improve their pronunciation and reading skills. It fulfills another one of the learning standard where the pupils will be able to read and understand sentences (35 words) in linear and non- linear texts with guidance. The activity such as draw a

poster is one of the fun-filled activity that teacher can use during language arts lesson. During my previous School Based Experience (SBE) last semester, my mentor has shared her view on the pupils interest. Based on her observation, in learning language arts, pupils are more interested in making crafts such as drawing rather than singing and reciting poem. Thus, the activity namely Lets Draw! as I have suggested in teaching this poem will capture their interest to learn English. Drawing pictures of cat will able the pupils to use their fine motor rather than just listening to the teacher and reciting the poem. In addition, by referring to curriculum specification, word list forms a part of language content in English curriculum. There are words that pupils must be mastered according to their stages of the development. Words such as I, have, you, got are the examples that can be seen in the poem. Therefore, it have fulfills the language content that has been stated on the curriculum. The next importance factor in choosing the poem is based on the pedagogical principles. Ann Terry (1974) stated that the pupils at the age of fourth, fifth, sixth grades like contemporary poem rather than traditional ones. They loves poem which contain familiar and enjoyable experiences. The animal character on this poem is one of the common things in their daily life. Other than that, this poem is taken from the year 1 syllabus. It is a high quality poem because it comes from trustable resources. In addition, teaching this poem is one of the effective learning because teachers can conduct many interesting activities based on the poem such as drawing and colouring to make sure the lesson is not bored and the objectives of the lesson can be achieved. In conclusion, Mrs. Cat can be used in school because it has fulfilled some of the pedagogical principle in teaching young children. This poem is not only focused in language arts skills but also can be integrated with listening, speaking and reading skills. It is in line with the Curriculum Specification that has been suggested by the government.

Justification of the selected song Based on the pedagogical aspect which is interest or can be defined as the feeling that you have when you want to know or learn something by Oxford Advance Learners Dictionary, I am convinced that my choice of song fits the purpose of English language curriculum. "Old Pak Mamats Farm" is an edited version of Old MacDonald Had a Farm folksong. It is a childrens song about a farmer named Pak Mamat and the various animals he keeps on his farm. This song is quite long but each verse of the song just changes the name of the animal and its respective noise. The lyric of edited verse is different but the melody is same as the original song. In the edited version, I have chosen a few animals that familiar with the pupils such as cow, hen, cat and duck. It is a bit different from the original verse where the composer just only introduces five animals which are cow, pig, sheep and duck. Besides, this song has been chosen because the structure of this song is simple and easy to be understood. The choices of word are simple and suitable where the pupils especially standard 1 could understand the song easily. Furthermore, based on the rhythm and its average tempo, pupils will enjoy singing this song during the lesson. As related to primary English Language Curriculum, level 1 student have to attain certain objectives such as being able to listen to, say aloud and recite rhymes or sing songs with guidance as well as can talk about a stimulus with guidance. Their listening and speaking skills will be improved by linking the skills with body movement. Through Old Pak Mamats Farm song, teacher can conduct an action song where pupils will make the action of animals. Even though this song is contained in year 1 syllabus, it is however also can be used for year 2 pupils who have low English proficiency level. As I stated earlier, students interest has been listed out as one of pedagogical principles in teaching songs and poetry to young learners. Therefore, folksongs have been recognized as one of the famous genre used in the school to teach English because this genre has simple structure and gives some moral value to the pupils. The use of animals and their sounds will attract pupils interest as it is familiar in their daily life. In addition, activity such as action song could be done to make the pupils more enjoyable and motivate them to learn. As they are familiar with animals, it is easier to teach this song to the pupils because they could relate it with

their own experiences. For example, if they have a duck as a pet, they will know how to make ducks sound which is quack. Thus, it is in line with the pedagogical principles which stress student experiences in teaching songs and poetry. Moreover, the use of song in teaching literature is an effective learning as it is easy method to be used in a lesson. Teachers can conduct activity such as action song to make the lesson become more interesting and alive. As most of children love to learn through fun activities, the used of music or songs will help teacher to conduct an interesting games during the lesson. The cost-effectiveness teaching aids such as radio and flashcards makes it can be done easily. Furthermore, Old Pak Mamats Farm is a song that categorized under the World of Knowledge theme as stated in the year one and two curriculum. According to The Standard-based English Language Curriculum for Malaysian National Primary Schools (SK), students will be able to take part with guidance in a performance based on the action songs as it is one of the learning standards suggested for teaching year one and two pupils. The action song is in line with the content standard that required pupils to be able to plan, organize and produce creative works for enjoyment. In addition, based on the learning standards of year one and two, pupils will be able to recognize and articulate initial, medial and the final sounds in single syllable words such as [e], [i], [o] as contain in the lyrics of this song. It enables pupils to improve their reading skills through fun- filled activities. The examples can be seen clearly in every stanza which is E-I-E-I-O. This is in line with the content standard which required the pupils to apply knowledge of sounds of letters to recognize words in linear and non- linear text. In conclusion, this song is very suitable to be used by the teacher as it is fulfills the pedagogical principles and in line with the curriculum specification in KSSR.
