Abstract: Low-carbon landscape architecture is a new strategy of landscape design which emerges from the
background that the global climate change is increasingly obvious and the shortage of traditional fossil energy
becomes more serious. It would hopefully serve as one of the effective approaches for creating sustainable
development society. In addition to describing the initial concepts, origin and development of low-carbon landscape
architecture, this article also identifies and summarizes the function characteristics from a successful involvement in
international experience programs, and finally proposes principles of low-carbon landscape architecture. It hopes to
popularize the idea of low-carbon landscape architecture and achieve the aim of low-carbon landscape planning in
order to lay the foundation for the creation of low-carbon city in the 21st century.
