COMMITTEE: DISEC Topic: Middle East nations getting nuclear weapons Country: Australia School: Sanskriti School New

Delhi HISTORY OF THE TOPIC: The nuclear weapons and other WMDs are the most
dangerous weapons in the world. They can destroy the whole human race in a very less time. Although they were used twice in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 but the impact still prevails. The Middle East nations which are mostly less developed and they are not well established economically and politically in the world. Their religious and historic rivalries give them the ambition to make deadly weapons such as the WMDs pose a big threat to the world peace and mankind. Their current enmity with the US is also a reason for the Middle East nations to enlarge their nuclear arsenal

HISTORY OF TOPIC IN AUSTRALIA: Australia strongly condemns the

enlargement of the nuclear arsenal by the Middle East nations. Australia is associated with the US through the ANZUS pact as well as through the NPT in which Australia is one of the state parties of the NPT. Australia rejected the option to be a nuclear state and signed the NPT in 1970.In the 1990s Australia convened the Canberra Commission on the elimination of the nuclear weapons. It also made a significant contribution to the Comprehension Nuclear Ban Treaty. Australia strongly condemns the uranium enrichment process of Iran and Israel and emphasizes them to clarify and resolve the issues with IAEA and abide by its laws. IAEA has directed Australia and New Zealand to confirm whether Syria is conducting undeclared nuclear activities with the assistance of North Korea. Australia is a member of Vienna group of ten and the MTCR and is required to submit its reports to the IAEA about the Syrian and Iranian nuclear tests. Australia supports the sanctions of the UN on Iran and its uranium enrichment programmes. Australia along with Japan has organized the International Commission on Nuclear Non Proliferation and Disarmament. The delegate of Australia in IAEA meeting raised the issue of increasing the nuclear warheads of Israel in 2007 it was around 60 to 120 but it has increased to 75 to 200.In December 2006 Australia fully supported the strict checking on the exports and imports of uranium and radioactive material on all the MIDDLE East nations which have a considerable nuclear arsenal. Australia has also directed the US to stop its military campaigns against the Middle East nations and to come on a peaceful conclusion with these countries at the last NPT session. It strongly condemned the building of the SPY DRONE by Israel whose main objective was to keep a check on the nuclear developments of Palestine and Iran

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS: Australian Government strongly supports the inclusion of more

nations in the NPT which prevents the spread of the nuclear weapons. ICNND established by Australia is an example of an organization which can help prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. There should be a regular inspection of all the countries nuclear bases. It should be done by neutral countries which dont possess any nuclear weapons or any WMDs
