Vasques March 27th 2012 Speech Outline for Speech #3 - Music and Education Introduction To continue from my previous speech: Music aids learning: AAA program = Atmosphere Attentiveness Attitude SLIDE 1 (+ music file) To recap: The Mozart effect is a phenomenon that states when an individual listens to short bursts of music, their intellectual and motor abilities increase and become more efficient due to: Physical Effect on the Developing Neurons in the Brain: It has a profound effect on young children because their minds are still developing at a rapid rate and their neural pathways are easily influenced. The ductility of an infants brain must be utilized to its fullest potential, because unused nerves are rendered useless neural pruning Music composed by Mozart has a 60 beat per minute pattern that is repeated throughout his pieces activates the action potentials in the right and left hemispheres of the brain and strengthens the connections between the neurons that connect the two halves.

Therefore - Strengthening of the neural connections = more efficient information processing = Creativity; Memory; Spatial intelligence; Mathematics; Language; multitasking

Effect on Mental State: The Frequency Following Response. Specifically, the positive effects of specialized audio encourage the brains internal patterns and rhythms to match and then follow the frequencies in the audio. Music affects your brain waves: Slower baroques, such as Bach, Handel, or Vivaldi can access Alpha brain waves originating from the occipital lobe during periods of relaxation. As you relax you can move out of stressors that otherwise impede your creativity. Research has found that the ideal state for learning is when the brain is in a relaxed, but aware state. Relaxed but not asleep! Relaxed, focused and aware. This is called the alpha state brain waves cycling at 8-12 hertz. Right and Left Brain Senses Did you know we have more than five senses?

Albert Einstein was a right brain genius. He said, "Imagination (a right brain characteristic) is more important than knowledge." The left brain is linked to the "outer" senses of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. The right brain is linked to the "inner" senses of perfect memory, computer-like math calculation, rapid language acquisition, perfect pitch (music abilities), and intuitive thought. More than 25,000 secondary school students over a period of 10 years. Particular interest in how arts education impacted students from families of lower socio-economic resources (low SES), compared to those from higher levels (high SES). 2. The overall findings were quite clear - Performance in a wide range of academic subjects and on standardized tests was significantly higher for students involved in sustained arts education. Statistical analyses of academic performance from the 8th through 12th grades further showed that the beneficial effects increased over time. Low SES students also showed significant improvements if they were involved in arts education. In fact, their relative gains were as great or larger than the high SES students. 3. An analysis that focused on instrumental music and mathematics was also quite revealing. Dr. Catterall and his associates discovered that music students were far more likely to achieve the highest levels of proficiency in math tests than non-music students. Again, low SES students also benefited. In fact they not only scored higher in math than low SES students who were not involved in music but also better than the average of all students. Conclusion: Music aids in: Expression: Risk-taking Cooperation: Synthesis: problem olving Higher self-concept in reading, math and general academics Teachers rated them as having more self-confidence.. Music aids learning: AAA program = Atmosphere, Attentiveness (Alpha waves), Attitude MUSIC MATTERS!! One cannot deny the power of music. High school students who study music have higher grade point averages than those who don't. These students also develop faster physically. Student listening skills are also improved through music education.

The top three schools in America all place a great emphasis on music and the arts. Hungary, Japan, and the Netherlands, the top three academic countries in the world, all place a great emphasis on music education and participation in music. The top engineers from Silicon Valley are all musicians.
