Introduction: Global warming, increasing fuel price and the requirement of better driver experience in passenger vehicles have lead to increased focus on power train research. In the current module, the students are exposed to layout and design of power train. Automotive emissions and their control to meet Government regulations are also dealt with in detail. This assignment is designed to test the students understanding of power train in automobiles and the capability to design power train components. This assignment consists of three parts. The first part (Part-A) of the assignment is designed to test querying and analytical ability of students with respect to the future of IC engines. In the second part (Part-B) students are required to size the components of power train and in the third part (Part-C), students are required to model the designed engine using Ricardo WAVE and analyse the effect of engine speed on the performance characteristics of the engine. Part-A Problem statement Research in automotive power train has been pushed to the forefront due to emission and efficiency requirements. Alternative fuels, Fuel cells and battery powered vehicles are supposed to be the future and slated to replace conventional IC engines soon. In this context, the students are required to carry out independent study on the research efforts in science and technology of design of power train components and debate on the following statement. By year 2025, more than 30% of the CI engines will be run using bio-diesel in India. Following points can be focused on to carry on the discussion and arrive at conclusion. Economics of bio-diesel extraction and distribution. Availability of required inputs and their CO2 foot print. Environment impact of this option and expected engine performance issues. This part of the assignment must be limited to three A4 pages including all illustrations in the Word processed document. 30 marks Part-B Problem statement In this section you are required to design the power train and conventional transmission system and specify the cooling load of the engine for given application vehicle. Select a vehicle class in consultation with module leader, from (a) small car (b) medium sized car (c) Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The following subsections need to answered. Estimate the performance requirement for the class of automobile chosen. This includes the mass of the laden vehicle, power and torque requirement and the climb performance to climb a gradient of 10%. Design the engine (number of cylinders, bore, stroke, valves sizes) to develop the required torque and power ratings at predefined rpm range of the vehicle. Design a manual transmission system assuming suitable number of gear shifts and gear ratios and match the same with the designed engine. Estimate the cooling load and coolant flow requirement. Compare your results with the vehicles of same-class.

Excel sheet showing all the calculations and graphs must be submitted with the word processed document. 35 marks Part-C Problem statement In this section of assignment, students are required to simulate the designed engine ( in Part B) in Ricardo Wave and obtain performance variation at different speeds of the engine. Mention all crucial assumptions (in the model and methodology) Compare the results from Wave model and theoretical calculations and comment on the differences. Explain the changes needed to make the wave model more accurate. All the concerned working files of the software must be submitted to the module leader in time. 25 marks Marking Scheme Question Content Marks No. Part A Preamble for the discussion and identification of research 10 direction in power trains and related discussion Importance and influence of identified power train option 05 Possible other avenues for further research Overall frame work of the debate, argument development, depth of information and conclusion Total Design Specification with justification Estimation of tractive force and power requirement Sizing of engine components Design of manual transmission Estimation of coolant flow requirements Total Part C
