Title of Unit: Regions Title of Lesson: How regions are used

1. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson is designed to further enhance the knowledge of regions by having the students understand how regions are used. 2. Target Population: grade level: 2nd grade skill level: students at all grade levels grouping: whole group discussion, small group discussion, independent notes.

3. Objectives: G6.2.1 Define region and provide examples of regions. 4. Procedure: 1. Ask questions to the students that use the students prior knowledge. What is a region? How are regions defined? What features do they have in common? What are the differences between borders, boundaries, and belts? Make sure they students understand what they have learned. 15 min 2. Have a discussion on how they think regions are used. 5 min 3. Explain to them that governments use regions as a way to track their resources. The U.S. government collects facts on the people, environment, and natural resources in each region. It uses the information as a way to best use its resources. 5 min 4. Discuss that people use regions to help them make decisions. Especially for people that are in businesses. States are also divided into regions which are called counties. 5 min 5. Students will work with their groups to find other uses can regions be used for. How having regions is helpful. 10 min 6. After finishing up with their group students will discuss with the class what other uses are there for regions. Teacher will write all the examples on the board and go over them to see if they are correct. Students will record what is correct on the board on their journals. 10 min 7. Assessment: An informal assessment is to make sure that students are engaged in their group discussion and contributing to the discussion as well. Also making sure they are writing in their journals so the journals are collected. 8. Reflection:

What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? - Students will need to be able to pay attention to the information that is being given so that they can contribute to group discussion.

How will you follow up or extend this lesson? - To extend this lesson I will go over how one place can have a lot of regions. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? - I will work them during the group discussions to discuss what they are having problems with and how to help. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? I can anticipate that students can have some difficulties finding out other things that regions are used for.
