Analysis This part of the text greatly signifies how people will only work to benefit themselves and to only make them selves known to be the good lawyer in this specific example. This part shows how the lawyers are only arguing for their own reputations, rather than to actually solve for Mersaults problems. The lawyers set a concrete example of how people will act very selfishly, and only take account of themselves. This chunk of chapter 4 is subtly salient as it portrays how Mersault is actually feeling something/emotion about the case trial. Before this particular scene, he just stared, and zoned out of what the people were actually saying, but now, he feels that this case is somewhat biased against him. This is a crucial point of the book because it shows how he is now aware of what is really happening to him, Mersault all of a sudden realizes how hot the room is after observing the court room, and the arguments between the lawyers. This foreshadows that something unpleasant is going to happen, because all parts of the book when the weather was hot, it has ended up very bad, such as the murder. This shows how uncomfortable Mersault is. This scene straight up portrays how the society acts as a group, and thinks as a group. They are unable to accept something that is not usual to them, and something that breaks their societal norms. It tells the reader that our society is somewhat corrupt. Even though some may argue that thinking with same opinion is not bad, but it will blind us from the unexpected. Memories symbolize internal support and motivation as they provide security and something to reconnect to the world. It is seen in this scene that Mersault was zoning out of the arguments, and not thinking very straight until he heard a sound from his memories, which directly drew back the earth and made him pay a little more attention. Memories allow Mersault to not forget about what his real point of life is, and keep him stable.

Irony: guillotine the guillotine looked like such a precision instrument, perfect and gleaming (112) Theme: absurdism

The evening represents calmness, and the peace inside Mersault. He feels more safe during the evening, partly due to the absence of the sun, and the cool weather. During the tension inside the courtroom, Mersault somehow recognizes that it is evening. I think that he likes the evening, because not everything is exposed. This particular scene can be interpreted in many different ways. One way, is that Mersault doesnt want Marie to look at him in despair, and doesnt want to show his weak side, which portrays how Mersualt has inner feelings towards Marie, the whole time, and just didnt show it. Another way is that Mersualt is so concentrated into the court case, he didnt want to look back. This also again shows how he has feelings for what is going to happen. There is a change in Mersault. This scene illustrates the natural tendency in human beings, and shows how crude they are to each other. The fact that people are looking at him with pity is very ironic as they were the ones who chose Mersault to get his head cut off. This is human tendency, because people pity the less fortunate people, and thank their own positions, when comparing them . The readers develop insane amounts of pity, as Mersault mentions his memories with his mom. Does this not only show how he had feelings for his mother, he also is missing her. This shows the readers that there was a weak part in Mersaults heart, and that he just didnt want to reveal it. This quote is located after he had been sentenced to death. This shows how people want to reminisce and grab all their memories of life before they die, because of the security it fills one up with. It is a human tendency to want to live, and to be scared to die. Mersualt is showing how he is afraid of dying, and is trying to blend himself with memories. This is full of irony, as the guillotine portrays death, and blood. This machine is not of precision but rather a tool of corruption and a tool of blood letting. The theme of absurdism shows itself on this part

Well, so Im going to die But everybody knows life isnt worth living (114) Vocabulary: sinewy They were slender and sinewy and they reminded me of two nimble animals (116) Theme: people turn to religion for safety Then God can help you

of the text, and portrays great importance to the readers. This shows how Mersualt has reached the part of the road where he has to decide which way to take, and has decided to accept that there is no point of life, and lives on Definition: fibrous It is a natural tendency for people to feel scared of dying, and panicking about what is going to happen. And in many examples, the people turn to religion right before they die. This shows how people need the feeling of security, and needs to be fulfilled. Mersault is very scared of death, and wants to feel safe, but cant really express that feeling. He keeps mistreating the Christian, who tries to comfort him, and gets very angry at him. Even though Mersault doesnt seem to be interested in believeing in a religion, according to this quote, it is seen of how he wants the feeling of comfort, etc.

Character: Mersault I was pouring out on him everything that was in my heart, cries of anger and joy (120)
