General Assignment Guidelines

This assignment combines Key Skills in English, Mathematics and IT. It is divided into tasks, which correspond to specific outcomes in English, Mathematics and IT. All tasks are to be attempted. You need to present TWO printed copies of this assignment, which you will hand in to your English and Mathematics assessor. Present ONE soft copy version of this assignment to your IT assessor. The write-up, describing your survey results, and the questionnaire should appear in all three assignment copies.

Scenario
Your institute is carrying out a small survey on general interests and habits. You have offered to obtain this information yourself by designing and carrying out a short questionnaire. Your survey topic must be related to the vocational area taught at your institute (as far as possible).

Required
1. Based on the above scenario, choose an area to research among your fellow classmates or other people. 2. Select a topic that is related to your area of study. Your tutor will help you to select this topic. 3. You are to individually create and hand out a questionnaire to collect data on this topic. 4. Finally, you are to tabulate the data collected and produce a short write up on the findings obtained.

Part 1

Drafting and Formatting the Questionnaire Task 1 covers ENGLISH Criterion P3.1

Task 1
On an individual basis, you should decide the questions to be used in your questionnaire. Prepare a first draft. Your questionnaire should contain a total of 6 questions and needs to be in English. An introduction to yourself, your course and your topic/objective of your survey is necessary. Also ask if the participants are willing to fill out the questionnaire. Write this introduction at the start of the questionnaire.

A questionnaire sample (see Sample Questionnaire attached) has been provided to give you a visual indication of the point described above.

One of the questions must ask for the persons gender, and another question must ask for the age.

One of the age groups must be between 17 and 19 years. The remaining 4 questions can be about anything you like, focusing on your institutes vocational area (as far as possible).

The draft questionnaire must be discussed with your English and Mathematics tutors before it can be carried out.

Task 2 covers IT Criteria P2.3, P2.4, P2.5 and P2.7 Task 2

The questionnaire is to be prepared using Microsoft Word and you are to hand in a soft copy for this task. ALL of the following specifications must be present in the questionnaire. Left and right margins set as 2.5 cm. Header to display: Your institute on left hand side in bold formatting Your name on right hand side in italic formatting

Footer to contain an automated date field. Text size of header and footer to be 9 point. Questionnaire heading (title) to be centred, in bold formatting and font size equal to 18 point.

Adequate use of bullets and/or numbering. Adequate use of symbols. Adequate use of tables or tabs to align different items. Adequate alignment of text. Document to be spell-checked. Questionnaire to include a relevant picture anywhere on the page. Border to be added to the whole questionnaire. Questionnaire to fit on one A4 page.

A questionnaire sample (see Sample Questionnaire attached) has been provided to give you a visual indication of the points described above.

Part 2

Collecting and Tabulating Data Task 3 covers MATHEMATICS Criterion P3.1

Task 3
When your questionnaire is ready and you have discussed it with your tutors, you are to give it to 20 people to collect the required data. Once the questionnaires have been returned, you are to tabulate your results for each question using an appropriate format. The tabulated data has to be provided as an Excel workbook in soft copy and hard copy format. The 20 complete questionnaires should also be provided with the hard copy.

Part 3

Analysing Data

Task 4 covers MATHEMATICS Criterion P3.2 and IT Criteria P3.4 and P3.7 Task 4
Once the data required has been collected and tabulated, you are to present the results of each question graphically. You must use at least one bar graph, one pie chart and one pictogram. At least one of the pie charts must be drawn by hand. The visual representations have to be provided as an Excel workbook in soft copy and hard copy format.

All the following specifications must appear. All charts have to be on a separate worksheet. All charts have to be appropriately named. All charts must show a title, legend and data labels. Pie charts are to show the percentage data label. Other charts are to show the value data label.

A sample (see Sample Charts attached) has been provided to give you a visual indication of the points described above.

Task 5 covers MATHEMATICS Criterion P4.1 Task 5

Use the data you obtained from your questionnaire to find the following probabilities: (a) P (male) (b) P (age more than 16) (c) P (age less than 20)

Task 6 covers ENGLISH Criterion P4.2 and MATHEMATICS Criteria P2.2 and P4.2 Task 6
When you have drafted your questionnaire, you are now asked to write a short write-up with the following details: Describe how you chose the 20 persons who filled out your questionnaire. Your description must: 1. indicate what the objective behind your topic was 2. indicate how many participants were male and female 3. their age group 4. if they were randomly chosen or not. If no, state how they were chosen. For each question asked in the questionnaire, write down a few sentences in English to highlight the main findings for that question. 3 of these sentences must describe these findings by using fractions or percentages (E.g. Twenty percent of the people answering my questionnaire were female). Conclude your write-up by writing 3 sentences in English to discuss the probability values arising from the results obtained in Task 5. Use suitable word/phrase indicators. (E.g. There is a lower probability of female students who like cars.).
