Lesson Plan # 1 out of 5

Summary of the Lesson Plan:

This lesson helps children to identify and define states, countries, and continents. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin social studies book Teachers Edition (TE) for second grade, entitled, Neighborhoods, and it consists of pages 66-71.

Target Population:

Grade level: second Skill level: at grade level Grouping: whole group, with a partner, and independent work for the study guide worksheet.

Objectives:

G6.2.2 Describe neighborhoods and communities as places where people live, work, and play. G6.2.6 Show that different locations have different addresses.
Procedure: 1. The teacher will start by engaging the students she will ask the students: What do you call the community where you live? Do you know your address? 2. She will then introduce the new vocabulary words to the students by writing them on the board, repeating them to the students, and having the students write the words and definitions in their vocabulary journals. The new vocabulary words for the day are: country a land where people have the same laws and leaders; state a part of a country; continent a very large body of land; nation another word for country. 3. The teacher will then read aloud pages 66 and 67. When she finishes the reading she will ask the students, Look at the envelope on page 66. What is Carlos address? Have any of you written a letter to someone before? The students will share their answers with their shoulder partner (the student sitting next to them). 4. The teacher will then call on students to read pages 68 and 69 aloud to the class. After these pages have been read the teacher will ask the students, Which two countries on the continent of North America are the neighbors of the United States? The students can discuss this with their shoulder partner and share their ideas with the class if they choose to. The teacher will go over the correct answer with the class after they have had a chance to share what they think is the correct answer.

5. Next, the teacher will review this lesson by doing a short minilesson. She will create a chart with three boxes, one on top of the other. She will draw this on the board and students will copy the chart into their journals. The students will use three of their vocabulary words (continent, country, state) to fill in their chart. The students will fill in the chart with the largest

to smallest, with the largest being on top. The students will also write an example of the word in its box. For example, in the continent box the student should write North America. 6. Lastly, the students will work individually to complete the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet.

Assessment:

I will know whether the students understand the concepts from the lesson or not based on the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet they complete at the end of the lesson. This activity does address the standard because the students must be familiar with their new vocabulary words and demonstrate their knowledge of the difference between a state and country in order to correctly complete this worksheet.

Reflection: What skills do students need in order to be successful with this lesson? The students will need to know how to read, work with a partner, write, and have adequate comprehension skills in order to be successful with this lesson. The teacher will be going around offering help to students who struggle in any of these areas. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? The lesson can be extended by having the students read a short biography about an astronaut. I will discuss with the students what they think astronauts see from space and show them a few pictures taken by satellites in space so they can see. I will then have the students write two questions they would ask the astronaut if they could. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept, I will work with them in a small group to go into more detail about what a continent, country, and state are. The teacher will give the students examples of different continents, countries, and states. She will also show them pictures so they can get a visual of the size difference between the three bodies of land. Where do you anticipate having problems with this lesson? I dont anticipate having any major problems with this lesson. I will be doing the reading aloud to the whole class to ensure ELL students will have an adequate understanding of the reading. While the students are reading aloud for two pages I will help guide them through the text if they are having any difficulty reading the text.
