1. Lateral stability of a long shaft 15cm in diameter is obtained by means of a 25cm stationary bearing having an internal diameter of 15.025cm. If the space between the bearing and the shaft is lled with a lubricant having a viscosity 49Nsec/m2 , what power will be required to overcome the viscous resistance when the shaft is rotated at a constant rate of 180rpm? [16]

2. Give examples where boundary and dry friction occurs in machines. Write their merits and demerits. [16] 3. What are the applications of extremely pressurized bearings?

4. Many animal and plant oils and fat make excellent lubricants, yet they are rarely used. Why should this be? [16] 5. Classify various bearing materials.

6. Analyze the hydrostatic bearing for load carrying capacity, frictional torque and power loss. [16] 7. A circular pad hydrostatic bearing has an outside radius of 0.1m and circular recess radius of 0.02m. The viscosity of the lubricant used is 30 cP. The oil is supplied to the bearing by a pump at constant ow rate of 20 l/min. Calculate the load capacity for a uniform lm thickness of 100 m and the percentage increase in load capacity if the lm thickness is reduced by 10%. For the same bearing, assume now that the oil is supplied by a capillary restrictor, such that the thickness is still 100 m and that the pressure drops across the capillary from 60MPa to 30MPa. Calculate the load carried by the lm again and the percentage increase in load if the lm thickness is reduced by 10%. [16]
