Apalachee CI Dodgeball Tournament Official Rules

The Team

Teams will be made up of a minimum of 6 players/maximum of 10 players. Six players will compete on each side; others will be available for substitutes. A minimum of (2) females per team At least one female has to start each game Each team must hand in an official roster and the registration fee prior to the start of the tournament please arrive early if this has not been completed so that we can process your team without delaying the start of the tournament. Please inform us of your intent to participate and provide us with the registration form/waivers as early as possible so that we may configure the tournament bracket and game schedules.

The Field
The area of play will be the dimensions of a standard high school volleyball court

area. The area of play will be on a grass surface and will be marked with chalk/paint. There will be a 3-5 feet safety zone on both sides of the center line from where players cannot be struck by the ball from the opposing team, or throw the ball at the opposing team. This is to ensure the safety and fairness to all players involved. The safety zone will be marked. Equipment (6) balls will be used. Officials will place these balls on the center line. Players must start behind their own baseline before the start of play. Play will commence upon the sounding of a whistle or horn. Any or all members of either team may try and gain possession of the six balls located on the center line. Boundaries During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may pass through their end line only to retrieve stray balls. A stray ball is one that has not been picked up and is lying on the ground. Players must also return through their end line. A player may be handed a ball by teammates standing out of bounds as long as that player remains completely within their teams team boundaries.

A player who has been eliminated may not retrieve a stray ball and must remain in the designated eliminated player box If a ball is thrown into the stands, it must be given to the team on that side

The Game Best 3 out of 5 matches / Double Elimination: Matches will be decided using a best 3 out of 5 format; the first team to win 3 matches will be declared the winner of the game. A match will begin with a coin toss. The team winning the toss will choose their side. The teams will then subsequently alternate sides after each game. The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them OUT. This may be done by: 1. Hitting an opposing player with a live thrown ball below the shoulders. (If a player ducks, and this is the cause for the player being hit above the shoulders, the hit is legal and the player is out.) 2. Catching a live ball thrown by your opponent. 3. Causing an opponent to drop a held ball as a result of contact by another thrown live ball. (This will usually occur when a ball is being used to block a thrown ball.) 4. Crossing or touching the center line after the opening rush. 5. Stepping outside of the boundaries by momentum or to avoid being hit.

A Live Ball (defined): A thrown ball that strikes or is caught by, an opposing player without first contacting the ground. A ball deflecting off a held ball and striking the holder is not a live ball.

It must be a direct hit in order to consider the person out of the game. Deflections off the floor, wall, court dividers, rafters, do not count as an out if caught. Deflections off a teammate, where the ball does not hit the ground before hitting the second player DO count, and both players are out. Timing and winning the game:

The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner (of the game) A regulation match consists of one, five (5) minute period. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of regulation, the team with the greater number of players will be declared the winner. If an equal number of players remain at the end of regulation, a one (1) minute sudden death overtime will be played. The first team to legally eliminate one opponent will be declared the winner. All overtime periods will begin with an equal number of balls in hand behind a teams end line. No time outs are allowed during overtime. the start of an overtime period. Substitutions may only be made before

If no players have been eliminated at the end of overtime, an additional player from each team (to a maximum of six) will be returned to play for the next period of overtime.

Time Outs / Substitutions Each team will be allowed (1) one 30 second time out at which time they may substitute players into the game.

Five-Second Violation To reduce stalling, a violation will be called if the team in the lead controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than (5) five seconds. (A team may avoid a violation by throwing or rolling a ball into the opponents backcourt). 1st violation: stoppage of play and ball are divided evenly between teams, play continues with Ball in Hand 2nd violation: Stoppage of play and free throw for opposing team. (one player is allowed a free throw at their opponents without the risk of elimination) 3rd violation: Ejection of one player from the opposing team. Other team chooses. ONLY a court official may call a (5) second violation.

The Bag Rule It is important to remember that this game is played for fun and is for a great cause. With 6 balls on the court and presumably 12 people, calls are going to be missed. To make sure games to not get ugly, it is the responsibility of the players and the refs to make sure things do not get out of hand. The refs are volunteering their time, and arguing about calls only takes away from game time and the experience. This also makes it so refs to

not make as many calls because they dont want to hear someone complaining about not being out. The RULE: The following will be considered violations and subject to consequences: 1. Arguing Calls 2. Verbally abusing another player or ref 3. Calling people out form your side when you are NOT a ref The CONSEQUENCES: 1st Time: Warning and name will be marked down on the score sheet 2nd Time: Player is called out of the game 3rd Time: Player is ejected from the match. The ULTIMATE Bag Rule This section is reserved for those special individuals that cannot handle competition and co-existing on the Dodgeball court. Everyone understands competitiveness, but there are some things that go TOO far and will NOT be tolerated. The Rule: The following will be considered violations and subject to the consequences: 1. Physical altercations (e.g. fighting, slapping, spitting, etc) will not be tolerated 2. Fighting words (eg. Im going to kill you Mother F***er) will also NOT be tolerated. 3. Bringing alcohol to the games or allowing fans to bring alcohol to the games. This is a family friendly function and drunks will not be allowed to participate or allowed access to the facility. The consequences: Automatic ejection from the match.
