By maureen megowan / re/max paloS VerdeS execS elin regina Brekke was born in 1919 in oslo norway, the daughter of a lumber factory owner. in 1946, elin met Kelvin Vanderlip, one of the sons of frank Vanderlip Sr., the founding father of the palos Verdes peninsula, on a weekend cruise to catalina, and married him soon thereafter. after marrying, elin and Kelvin took up residence in the cottage, the familys summer home in the portuguese Bend area. they lived there from 1946 to 1950, when they were given the adjacent Villa narcissa as a gift from Kelvins mother narcissa Vanderlip. Villa narcissa was originally built by frank Vanderlip as a guesthouse for the cottage; however elin made a number of additions to the property. the Villa has almost 12 acres of land, including 5 acres of land with many steps up a cypress lined stairway leading to a temple of eliana overlooking the property. the property also includes wonderful gardens and 13 small cottages that elin built for income purposes. during the 1940s, Villa narcissa, hosted many hollywood celebrities. myrna low, had lived there before world war ii, and paulette goddard and Burgess meredith had honeymooned there. in 1946, Kelvin hosted his good friend ted geisel (a.k.a dr. Seuss, the famous childrens book author) during the summer, and he later became the godfather to Kelvin Vanderlip Jr. elin and Kelvin were instrumental in the establishment of many landmarks in rancho palos Verdes. Kelvin headed up the chadwick School Board (which land had been donated by frank Vanderlip Sr.), donated land and oversaw plans for the wayfarers chapel, built a four-room schoolhouse (now St. peters by the Sea church)

and as president of the los angeles chamber of commerce - lobbied hard for marineland. elin and the Vanderlip family also played a large role in the formation and development of the portuguese Bend riding club (which had been originally built by frank Vanderlip as riding stables known as the farmery), the portuguese Bend Beach club (which Kelvin developed), and marymount college. elin also donated land for the construction of nansen field, originally a soccer field for norwegian seamen, which is now owned by a youth soccer club. although elin never married after husband Kelvin Vanderlip succumbed to lung cancer in 1956, she found love for 40 years with producer lehman lee Katz (the train, apocalypse now, fiddler on the roof), with whom she traveled to locations all over the world. Katz died at Villa narcissa at the age of 89 in 2003. elin passed away at the age of 90 in 2009. her legacy, as well as that of the entire Vanderlip family, will live on forever on the palos Verdes peninsula.

with tons of cupcakes, cookies and brownies, the cake Bakeshop in manhattan Beach has become the place where locals go to fulfill their sweet tooth cravings. opening the shop in august 2011 at 3319 highland avenue, owner and baker laura m. mandracchia has created sweet treats that everyone can enjoy. as her slogan says, we bake. you eat. with a sweet aroma emanating from every inch of the shop, mandracchia said she never knows on any given day who will walk into her shop. i see this as a neighborhood shop, mandracchia said. i think of the bakeshop as a place the every day person would want to be in. even little kids can come in with a dollar and get a cookie. while cake Bakeshop has the staples one would expect from any bakery, including red velvet cupcakes, walnut fudge brownies and snickerdoodle cookies, mandracchia also has seasonal specialties, with most of the shops sweets ranging in price from 75 cents to $3. making seasonal fruit scones, mandracchia currently has blackberry, strawberry and blueberry scones. in the summer, as more seasonal fruits arrive at local markets, she also plans to make a variety of fruit tarts. cake Bakeshop also offers gluten-free and vegan options. the shops gluten free choices include: brown butter rice crispy treats, french macarons and orange and coconut cookies and vegan cinnamon rolls. always testing out new recipes, mandracchia said she has journals full of recipes from restaurants shes worked in. and while she is a self taught baker, having no formal training, mandracchia subscribes to nearly every food magazine and watches tons of cooking shows for even more inspiration. the great thing about owning the shop and baking everything is that i get to make whatever i want, whenever i want, said mandracchia. Some of the most popular items in the shop continue to be almond chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and homemade oreos. however, the most popular item is cake Bakeshops banana bread, with mandracchia selling about 30 loaves a week. putting new sweets out every six weeks to two months, mandracchia will be doing that once again with summer right around the corner. along with trying to make more savory dishes, she wants to get a soft serve ice cream machine in the shop. offer a specific cookie to go with it. i always have something different, mandracchia said. i have staples, but i always try to switch it up.

redondo Beach had just 600 permanent residents when the majestic hotel redondo opened in 1890. as the first port of los angeles county, redondo had hopes for a promising future, and this extravagant hotel was part of the plan. Steamers from the pacific Steamship company regularly stopped at redondo four times a week at one of the three piers as part of their regular runs between San francisco and San diego. the redondo railway company and the Santa fe railroad left los angeles daily for redondo. this was the start of a bustling time in the citys young history, and eventually, redondo was served by henry huntingtons Big red electric cars. as the cornerstone of seaside redondo Beach, the hotel redondo was designed partly to rival the grand hotel del coronado, which had opened in 1888. each of the 225 rooms was decorated in a different fashion, and each floor featured a bathroom. the hotels overall look and feel was english, and hunting scenes decorated every hallway. the architecture featured included turrets, gables, and chimneys, and was everything the proprietors had envisioned. with tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, a grand ballroom, and an auditorium featuring opera programs, the hotel redondo was considered luxurious for the time. other hotel features included a billiard room, reading rooms, electricity, steam heat, and elevators. the unobstructed view from the hotel was unparalleled, and the beach was only a few steps from the hotels front door. the property was soon considered the centerpiece attraction and cultural hub of the South Bay. guests arrived by steamships that docked at redondo marina. local attractions at the time included the fishing wharf, moonstone beach, and the largest saltwater plunge in the world. although a deed restriction regarding hotel operations specified that liquor was not to be sold on the premises, liquor was readily available in nearby bars. henry huntington bought the property in 1905 and sold it five years later. however, by 1915 the hotels occupancy had declined dramatically. Some historians believe that the hotels demise was due to the city opting to go dry. the voters had decided to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol in redondo Beach after a bitter fight, and without alcohol, the number of hotel visitors decreased. eventually, the entire nation went without alcohol and entered into the era of prohibition. Some historians believe the hotel del coronado survived prohibition due to its proximity to the border, as this ensured it could easily be supplied with illegal alcohol, unlike the hotel redondo. with prohibition and the subsequent downturn in redondos commercial harbor business, the hotel redondo was closed in 1925. it was eventually sold for scrap lumber at a price of $300. the site was purchased by the city of redondo Beach for use as a park. it was later reduced to a much smaller area and renamed Veterans park. catalina avenue now occupies a broad stretch of the former 18-hole golf course. the next time you drive south on catalina Boulevard and cross torrance Boulevard, stop and imagine this imposing hotel encompassing all of what is now Veterans park. you can almost hear the steamships arriving with excited visitors,

the hotel was built at a cost of $500,000 and opened on may 3, 1890. the redondo Beach railway Station was located at the back of hotel redondo. Visitors who could not afford to stay at hotel redondo stayed at nearby tent city. patrons were charged $3.00 per week, or $10.00 per month for a tent. wooden floors and electric lights were included in the price. the hotel redondo was sold in 1910 to newton J. Skinner and w. J. conner, who planned to revamp the hotel at a cost of $25,000.

when the hotel redondo was constructed in 1900, several cottages were built nearby at the same time for guests as an extension of the hotel. in 1905, henry huntington, a prominent industrialist, purchased the hotel redondo and subsequently sold off the cottages. olin mcwain was an employee of huntingtons at the time, and when the opportunity arose to purchase a cottage, mcwain moved quickly, purchasing this particular cottage as well as several oceanfront properties. the cottages address at that time was referred to as 611 on the esplanade as the esplanade was a popular spot for promenading. hotel redondo guests enjoyed strolling along the broad avenue in all their finery and admiring the charming cottages. during their leisurely stroll, they could peek in between the cottages, take in the magnificent ocean view, and admire the lush, surrounding gardens.
gambling years
with the departure of the pacific Steamship company in 1914, redondo Beach experienced a decline in all of its business sectors, and the local shipping industry was eventually eliminated. as early as 1928, the gambling trade took hold of the area and several ships were soon anchored off the South Bay and acted as floating gambling halls. the vessels were anchored just beyond the three-mile limit and, therefore, outside the jurisdiction of the police and the tax collector. however, this did not stop the police from regular raids. the home on the north side of the mcwain home was known at this time for its huge spotlight which would act as a beacon for the ships and signal that the police were on their way. one of these spotlights is on display at the redondo Beach historical museum.

henry huntington was instrumental in the transformation of early redondo when he purchased the redondo Beach improvement company in 1905, the same year he bought the hotel redondo. real estate speculators hoped that huntingtons involvement in the city would mean prosperity, and they set off a week-long boom of real estate purchases. fortunes were apparently made and lost reminiscent of the 1880s. however, when this real estate boom turned to bust, numerous prospective sellers owned property with inflated prices. many of the properties were built but not paid for, and when this depression came along, the speculators were wiped out. at this time, huntington now owned about 90 percent of the area, and had also purchased the los angeles & redondo railway company. over the many years, the mcwain home has been passed down through generations and stayed in the family. there has been some gentle refurbishing, both inside and out, but the homes interior has been lovingly preserved and captures the era of that distinct historical time when the home was built. one can see touches of craftsman-type details in both the interior and exterior, although the current owner fondly refers to the homes architecture as barnstable due to its barn-like similarities. the current owner, fourth generation, crosses his expansive lawn twice a day and enters the pacific for a swim. there, not far from the former site of the hotel redondo, he admires the stately mcwain home while enjoying affectionate memories of his childhood and reliving his long, storied family history.
