and as president of the los angeles chamber of commerce - lobbied hard for marineland. elin and the Vanderlip family also played a large role in the formation and development of the portuguese Bend riding club (which had been originally built by frank Vanderlip as riding stables known as the farmery), the portuguese Bend Beach club (which Kelvin developed), and marymount college. elin also donated land for the construction of nansen field, originally a soccer field for norwegian seamen, which is now owned by a youth soccer club. although elin never married after husband Kelvin Vanderlip succumbed to lung cancer in 1956, she found love for 40 years with producer lehman lee Katz (the train, apocalypse now, fiddler on the roof), with whom she traveled to locations all over the world. Katz died at Villa narcissa at the age of 89 in 2003. elin passed away at the age of 90 in 2009. her legacy, as well as that of the entire Vanderlip family, will live on forever on the palos Verdes peninsula.

with tons of cupcakes, cookies and brownies, the cake Bakeshop in manhattan Beach has become the place where locals go to fulfill their sweet tooth cravings. opening the shop in august 2011 at 3319 highland avenue, owner and baker laura m. mandracchia has created sweet treats that everyone can enjoy. as her slogan says, we bake. you eat. with a sweet aroma emanating from every inch of the shop, mandracchia said she never knows on any given day who will walk into her shop. i see this as a neighborhood shop, mandracchia said. i think of the bakeshop as a place the every day person would want to be in. even little kids can come in with a dollar and get a cookie. while cake Bakeshop has the staples one would expect from any bakery, including red velvet cupcakes, walnut fudge brownies and snickerdoodle cookies, mandracchia also has seasonal specialties, with most of the shops sweets ranging in price from 75 cents to $3. making seasonal fruit scones, mandracchia currently has blackberry, strawberry and blueberry scones. in the summer, as more seasonal fruits arrive at local markets, she also plans to make a variety of fruit tarts. cake Bakeshop also offers gluten-free and vegan options. the shops gluten free choices include: brown butter rice crispy treats, french macarons and orange and coconut cookies and vegan cinnamon rolls. always testing out new recipes, mandracchia said she has journals full of recipes from restaurants shes worked in. and while she is a self taught baker, having no formal training, mandracchia subscribes to nearly every food magazine and watches tons of cooking shows for even more inspiration. the great thing about owning the shop and baking everything is that i get to make whatever i want, whenever i want, said mandracchia. Some of the most popular items in the shop continue to be almond chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and homemade oreos. however, the most popular item is cake Bakeshops banana bread, with mandracchia selling about 30 loaves a week. putting new sweets out every six weeks to two months, mandracchia will be doing that once again with summer right around the corner. along with trying to make more savory dishes, she wants to get a soft serve ice cream machine in the shop. offer a specific cookie to go with it. i always have something different, mandracchia said. i have staples, but i always try to switch it up.

the hotel was built at a cost of $500,000 and opened on may 3, 1890. the redondo Beach railway Station was located at the back of hotel redondo. Visitors who could not afford to stay at hotel redondo stayed at nearby tent city. patrons were charged $3.00 per week, or $10.00 per month for a tent. wooden floors and electric lights were included in the price. the hotel redondo was sold in 1910 to newton J. Skinner and w. J. conner, who planned to revamp the hotel at a cost of $25,000.

with the departure of the pacific Steamship company in 1914, redondo Beach experienced a decline in all of its business sectors, and the local shipping industry was eventually eliminated. as early as 1928, the gambling trade took hold of the area and several ships were soon anchored off the South Bay and acted as floating gambling halls. the vessels were anchored just beyond the three-mile limit and, therefore, outside the jurisdiction of the police and the tax collector. however, this did not stop the police from regular raids. the home on the north side of the mcwain home was known at this time for its huge spotlight which would act as a beacon for the ships and signal that the police were on their way. one of these spotlights is on display at the redondo Beach historical museum.
