Electronic Parts Catalog Installation

The installation of the Electronic Parts Catalog can be done from the CD-ROM. The Electronic Parts Catalog features 2 basic types of installation, single-user and multi-user, and it allows the choice between the Chevrolet Catalog and the GMC Catalog.

Electronic Parts Catalog development

The Electronic Parts Catalog was designed aiming at assisting all its possible users, mainly Dealers, Distributors and Clients of General Motors do Brasil Ltd. Due to the great variety of equipments and systems employed by this wide universe of potential users, the following premises concerning the design of the Electronic Parts Catalog were assumed: Microsoft Windows 95 operating system, from its first realease; User friendly graphic interface; Use of Microsoft Access format database; Includes a tool that permits access to Microsoft DAO database; Written in Microsoft VisualBasic programming language, using specific controls and objects (for example, tools that allow the exhibition of films, illustrations, videos, etc.).

These premises strive to fit the minimum equipment requirements so as to provide the user with full access to all the Electronic Parts Catalog features.

WARNING

REMARKS ON THE USE IN NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD

The Electronic Parts Catalog was designed to be used both in single-user (stand-alone) or multi-user computers as in a network neighborhood. However, some remarks on the use in a network are necessary: The Electronic Parts Catalog is not a client/servertype applicative; thus, its use entails a great data flow through the network. The installation has to be done in network neighborhoods of the type fileserver. Network installation must be very carefull. Make sure that the network in which the Electronic Parts Catalog is to be installed can accommodate the additional flow of data that will be originated. In case it be necessary, split up the network, restricting the flow of data only to the computers on which the Electronic Parts Catalog is being used. If necessary, install the Electronic Parts Catalog in more than one file-server in the network, with each server assigned to fewer client computers. Advanced network neighborhoods working specifically with Client-Server applicatives can experiment considerable performance decrease due to the amount of data that is originated by the Electronic Parts Catalog. Before installing the Electronic Parts Catalog in a network, it is imperative that you consult the system administrator or the technician responsible for the network. For a suitably dimensioned network, the maximum number of simultaneous clients is 15 computers, due to the restrictions imposed by the Microsoft Access database.

MULTI-USER/CLIENT installation: . Operating system Microsoft Windows 95, 98 or NT Workstation; . Processor Intel Pentium 200Mhz or higher, or equivalent; . Minimum 32Mb of RAM (64Mb recomended); . 200Mb free space on Hard disk (HD) (for the first edition. For future editions, the necessary free memory on HD may be higher); . 600x800 pixels (SVGA), 256 color video resolution (high color 16-bit recommended); . 16x CD-ROM drive unit (24x recommended); . Optional Multimedia Kit (required for viewing promotional videos); . Ink-jet or Laser printer to be shared by the network.

Types of Installation
First, define the type of installation that you wish to perform: . Single-user installation (stand-alone) . Multi-user installation (network neighborhood) . Server installation . Client installation

Single-user installation
In this option, the electronic catalog will be installed in one computer and will be used only in the same computer. All the necessary files that are used in the catalog (both data, program and control files) are installed in the single-user computer hard disk; Therefore, it is not required that the CDROM be in the CD drive unit to allow the use of the catalog. The installation procedure is performed in a single step: When the user chooses the single-user installation type, all the necessary files are copied from the CD-ROM onto the single computers hard disk.

12

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

2 - Installation

Procedure for SINGLE-USER installation: 1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive; 2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it; 3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the respective folder;

4. Double-click the file INSTALAR.EXE;

2 - Installation

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

13

5. After opening the installation program, select the singleuser option.

6. The installation program will ask you to supply information such as the name of the directory in which the program will be installed and the position on the Start Menu to place the shortcut; 7. After completing the installation, it might be necessary to restart your computer. In this case, the program will inform you.

Multi-user Installation (network neighborhood)

In this option, the Electronic Catalog will be installed in several computers, enabling it to be shared by a multi-user network neighborhood. In order to run that way, the Electronic Catalog must be installed in at least two different computers. One of these computers, which will host the programs and databases, will be named Server. The other computer, which will store only the minimum controls required to allow it to find the SERVER, will be named Client. Several client computers can be configured, provided that they always connect to the same server.

14

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

2 - Installation

Thus, in order to make the multi-user option run normally, at least two installations are needed: one on the Server and one on a Client. After that, a client-type installation on each new computer will be enough to provide that client machine with access to the Electronic Parts Catalog. The multi-user installation program will ask the user which step would he/she wish to perform

Server Installation
The Server Installation, which should be performed only once on each network, installs just the database and programs on the network server computer. The Server Installation can be carried out from any network computer that has a CD-ROM drive unit, i.e., not necessarily from the network server computer. The only requirement for the Server Installation is the network transparency, that is, all the Windows client computers can see and share the data folder on the server computer. Note that it is not compulsory that a Windows NT server be used; since the Windows-based clients have access to the server data folder, a Novell-NetWare, HP-UX, IBM-AIX, DECUTRIX, SUN-SOLARIS, SCO-UNIX server, among others, can be used. For instance, a UNIX system using TCP-IP protocol and NFS network service used to access Windows-based computers, will properly perform as a database for the electronic catalog. Note This kind of installation originates great data flow through your computer network. Refer to Remarks on the use in network neighborhood on page 10 of this manual for further information.

2 - Installation

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

15

Procedure for the MULTI-USER SERVER installation: 1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive unit of any network Client computer (this computer must use only the operating system Microsoft Windows 95 or higher); 2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it; 3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the respective folder;

Tip
Before you begin the server installation, create a new folder to store the Electronic Catalog on the server computer. This folder must be accessible to all the network clients. Remember the name you assigned to this folder, because it will be necessary to find it during the installation procedure.

4. Double-click the file INSTALAR.EXE;

16

Client Installation
The Client Installation, which can be performed on each network client computer that will be using the Electronic Catalog, installs the control files (dlls, ocxs, etc.). The data (database, illustrations, parts lists, etc.) and the programs will not be installed, for they will be loaded through the network whenever needed. In this type of installation, the user will be asked to provide the servers path, on which the data and programs have been previously installed. The only mandatory requirement to carry on the Client installation is that the client computer be running Windows 95 or higher, as specified in the minimum equipment requirements section of this manual. It should be clear that the Client installation can only be performed after the Server installation is completed. Procedure for the MULTI-USER CLIENT installation: 1. Insert the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive unit; 2. Double-click the CD-ROM to open it; 3. Select one of the options, Chevrolet or GMC, opening the respective folder;

Subjects selection
The subjects selection window is similar to the previous window (groups selection), but it has the list of subjects of the chosen group instead of the X-ray-type illustration of the vehicle.

In the same manner as on the initial window and on the groups selection window, here it is possible to select other vehicle than that previously chosen. To do this, click the name of the desired vehicle on the list on the left side of the window. Note that as the vehicle changes, the titles on the subjects list are altered so as to properly reflect the new chosen vehicle.

Tip It is possible to open the page referring to a subject in two manners: Double-clicking the subject you want to view or single-clicking the subject and, then, clicking the tab Catalog on the To open a page that refers to a particular subject on the cata- left side of the window.

log, select the subject on the dialog box and double-click it. The catalog window will open showing the chosen subject. On the subjects selection window, it is possible to use the filtering capability, which allows access to the data of a specific model on a catalog.

28

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

3 - Using the Calalog

Model-type filtering
Click the Filter upper button to turn on or modify the filter, or alternatively click the lower button to turn the filter off. Model-type filtering is a capability that allows you to select a specific model of vehicle on a catalog (which usually comprises a family of vehicle models) taking into account the vehicles Body, Version and Model Year.

Buttons assigned to turn on, modify and turn off the model-type filtering capability Examples of model-type filtering are: 1. To select the 1998 GLS Sedan model on the Corsa catalog, turn on the filter, select Body 19 - Sedan 4 doors, version J-GLS and Model Year 1998. 2. To select 1999 Double-Cab model on the S10 catalog, turn on the filter, select Body 7 - Double-Cab and Model Year 1999. Whenever a filter is turned on, the electronic catalog will exhibit only the specific parts that belong to the vehicle model filtered. This way, a parts list of a particular subject comprising let us say 50 parts before model-type filtering, will present for instance 20 parts or less after model-type filtering (being also possible that this list does not contain any part on the subject for the filtered model).

3 - Using the Catalog

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

31

It might happen that a filtered model does not hold any part on a particular subject. In this case, the parts list of that subject will be blank. (For example, on the Silverado catalog, when we filter the model 5 - Grand Blazer, the subject Bucket and Components will not exhibit any part for the filtered model. The Model-type filtering can be performed in 2 ways: VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) decoding Body/version/year selection

VIN decoding
On the upper portion of the filtering window, type the complete VIN of the vehicle you want to query. Click the button Decode. The system will interpret and decode the given VIN, picking up options of Vehicle, Body, Version and Model Year of that specific vehicle.
Tip VIN - The Vehicle Identification Number (also known as the chassis number) is an internationally standardized number that indicates the main vehicle characteristics, such as manufacturing plant, manufacturer, production line, body, version, engine, model year, serial number, etc.

Example: 9BGSC35ZXXC320137 Vehicle: Corsa Body: 35 (Wagon) Version: C (Wind/Super/L/ST) Model Year: 1999

32

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

3 - Using the Calalog

After seeing the decoding result, click the Filter button to activate the filter and search only the parts belonging to that specific vehicle model. In case you do not wish to use the filtering capability, click the Filter off button. The VIN decoding routine calculates, according to the given number, the vehicle type, the model (a combination of body and version) and the model year.

Body/Version/Year selection
With this option, it is possible to select the characteristics of the vehicle you want to filter. In the Filter dialog box, select the characteristics you want to filter in the following order: Vehicle, Body, Version and Model Year.

3 - Using the Catalog

Electronic Parts Catalog - September 1999

33

Note that, when you first select the vehicle, the body, version and year text boxes are automatically filled with data referring to the selected vehicle. From this point onwards, when you select a body type, the version and year text boxes are filled with the available options for the chosen vehicle/body combination. Finally, after selecting the version, the year text box is filled with the existing years for the model (body and version) of the chosen vehicle. In the event that you do not want to use the filter, click Filter off. Note When you use the filtering capability from the catalog window, the decoding VIN and vehicle selection text boxes become unavailable. These options are only accessible when the filtering is used from the window that presents the groups of catalogs.

Tip You can use the filter choosing only one selection criteria if you wish. For example, select a vehicle and only the year. In this case, all the models of that particular vehicle that belong to the selected year are filtered.

Catalog
The catalog window exhibits the illustration and the parts list referring to the subject chosen on the groups window.

As you drag the mouse over an item on the illustration, the corresponding part on the parts list will be highlighted. If you happen to click over an illustration while dragging the mouse, the link between the illustration and the parts list feature will be temporarily disabled. In this case, a notice will be displayed at the right upper part of the window. The temporary disabling of this feature aims at easing the navigation up to the parts list in order to include that particular part (the whose illustration was selected when you clicked the mouse over the illustration) on the pick-list or to open the Part detais window. To re-activate the link between the illustration and the parts list feature, just click again over the portion of the window that contains the illustrations .

Replacement parts search Warning

Be very careful when using the data displaying a replacement part (new) as the answer of a search. When a part is replaced, it is possible to ensure that, for all the applications of the canceled part (old), the use of a replacement part (new) is feasible. Therefore, when one makes a search using the Canceled (old) dialog box, the answer will be one or more parts that, certainly, can be used in substitution of the searched part. However, when one makes a search using the Replacement (new) dialog box, the answer will be one or more parts that were substituted by the searched part. In this case, the replaced parts MUST NOT be used in place of the replacement (new) part. The search through the number of the replacement part (new) is for information only, and the effective use of its results should be very careful. On the example of the previous page, both parts 52268860 and 52283370 were replaced with part 93232022, which can be used in place of any of the replaced parts (52268860 and 52283370). Nevertheless, the two replaced parts (52268860 and 52283370) MUST NOT be used in substitution to 93232022.
