AU delegation joins Model UN at Harvard

June 9th, 2011
Clubs at Anderson University range from sports to worship, and even international politics through Model United Nations. Students met once a week last semester to discuss current international issues, study their assigned country, and write draft resolutions. Their preparation allowed them to participate in a national conference as the delegation from the Republic of Chad at the 2011 Model UN conference hosted by Harvard University. Each participating university sent a delegation representing a country assigned prior to the event. Members of each countrys delegation represented the country on a committee specified by the conference. The committees were similar to the committees in the United Nations, such as the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), as well as historical committees. The present committees debated current issues in the world and worked toward resolutions, while the historical committees took the outcome of the international incident into consideration to find a different resolution. At the conference, students could only provide the views of their assigned country and not personal views. I was involved in Model UN in high school, and this is my second year of Model UN in college. More than 150 universities attended, which means 300 students per committee, Daugherty said. Having that many people representing different ideas can get crazy, but the conference makes the debate very organized. The conference had time limits for each country to state their position on a topic. My favorite part of the conference was meeting students from all over the world, Daugherty said. While Daugherty may be a veteran to Model UN, Haley Bartlett, a junior history and political science major, was attending her first conference. This was my first year in Model UN and my first conference, and it was a lot to take in once we got there, Bartlett said. During the debates it was hard to recall all the information I learned about the Republic of Chad. It was also rather difficult to ignore my American views. Bartlett was on the social humanitarian and cultural committee. She explained that delegates often passed notes concerning the issue at hand to form relationships and see where other countries stood on the issue. I never thought about getting involved with Model UN until my advisor encouraged me to sign up for the class, Bartlett said. I am glad I did it. It has been a great experience and I have learned a lot. Dr. Daniel Allen, assistant professor of political science, is the faculty advisor for Model UN at Anderson University. Model UN allows students to build and develop leaderships, allowing them to gain confidence to lead. It teaches students how to research and debate, it also helps interpersonal skills, said Dr. Allen. The Model UN is not just for history or political science majors. This year we had a variety of students from all types of majors. Daugherty has learned skills he will take with him after college. Model UN has taught me many different skills, such as learning to work with others that have different views, he said. It also has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and carry myself in a professional manor. Making quick decisions during the debate allowed me to think on my feet. The Anderson University Model UN group will attend the Chicago Model UN conference in the fall. Matt Dougherty is a junior from Breese, Ill., majoring in communication arts and marketing. Dougherty is an associate with Fifth Street Communications, writing on behalf of the Anderson University Office of University Communications. Anderson University is a private Christian university of 2,600 undergraduate and graduate students in central Indiana. Anderson continues to be recognized as a top Christian college: in 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Anderson University among the best colleges and universities in the Midwest for the seventh consecutive year. Established in 1917 by the Church of God, Anderson University offers more than 65 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in business, education, music, nursing and theology.
