Spring is here! And you know what that means... Easter candy! Today we will run a series of experiments on various types of candy in order to continue our study of chemical properties.

Part 1 - Starburst Composition Materials Starburst hot plate crucible tongs Procedure 1. Unwrap the Starburst and place it in the crucible. 2. Turn the hot plate to medium heat and place the crucible on the hot plate. 3. Observe as the Starburst melts. As the Starburst melts, make qualitative observations about how the candy looks. Watch to make sure you don't heat the candy too long and burn it. Caution--HOT! 4. When the Starburst is completely melted, turn off the hot plate and use the tongs to place the crucible on the lab table. 5. As the Starburst cools, make qualitative observations about how the candy looks. 6. When it's completely cool, collect the clear substance that has collected on top the candy and rub it between your fingers. Make qualitative observations about this substance compared to the colored substance. Starburst Qualitative Data Chart

Analysis 1. What do you think the colored substance is composed of? Explain your answer. 2. What do you think the clear substance is composed of? Explain your answer.

Part 2 - Skittles Solubility Materials four different colored Skittles Petri dish cold water white paper Procedure 1. Place the Petri dish on top of a piece of white paper on the lab table. 2. Fill the Petri dish 3/4 full with cold water. 3. Place the four Skittles in the Petri dish on opposite sides of the dish. 4. DO NOT disturb the dish by stirring or moving it. 5. Observe the results after 3-5 minutes. 6. Draw a sketch of what occurs. Sketch

Part 3 - Candy Acid Test Materials three unknown candies three 50mL beakers warm water wooden stirring stick sodium bicarbonate, CHNaO3 (s) in weighing boat scoopula

Name _____________ Date ______________

Procedure 1. Pour approximately 25mL warm water into each beaker. 2. Place one candy into each beaker. 3. Use the stirring stick to dissolve the substance as much as possible. 4. Test the candy for the presence of acid by adding a scoop of sodium bicarbonate to each beaker. 5. Observe the results. If a reaction occurs, acid is present.
