Birds and butterflies
add color and excite-
ment to a garden that
cant be found from any
other source. And their
contributions are much
more than aesthetic: Birds
help control insects and
slugs; while butterflies
are important pollina-
tors. Almost anywhere a
plant grows will get an
occasional visit from these
attractive and beneficial
creatures. Making your
yard a welcoming oasis for
them can be as simple as
choosing the right plants.
Inviting Butterflies
Butterflies and hum-
mingbirds feed primarily
on nectar, a sugary liquid
produced inside flowers.
Certain plants are excep-
tional sources of nectar,
such as the aptly named
butterfly bush (Buddleia),
which is a favorite of hum-
mingbirds as well.
Though these shrubs
have long been popular,
newly introduced varieties
offer major improvements.
For example, a Miss Molly
butterfly bush has intense
dark magenta flowers on a
compact 45 (1.21.5m)
plant. If space is an issue,
you may care to try the
Lo and Behold series of
butterfly bushes. These
shrubs pack all the flower
power and attractive silver
foliage of their larger kin
but in a neat, compact
package: Blue Chip is just
2430 (6072cm) tall.
White butterfly bushes,
such as Ice Chip, make an
excellent choice for busy
people who can only enjoy
their gardens at night.
The light-colored flow-
ers appear to shine in the
dark and at just 1824
(4560 cm) tall, it can be
planted in a large pot or as
an edging around a deck
or patio.
Attracting Songbirds
Numerous species of
much-loved songbirds,
such as cardinals, cedar
waxwings and bluebirds,
rely on berries for food.
Fortunately, several easy-
to-grow landscape plants
provide fruit for the
birds and beauty for the
gardener.
Winterberry holly, a
native shrub, is an espe-
cially nice choice. Unlike
other hollies, it loses its
leaves in autumn, mak-
ing the berry-laden stems
extra showy. Some variet-
ies are especially fruitful,
such as Berry Heavy, while
others are selected for
exceptionally bright color,
such as Berry Nice. Birds
prefer the fruit of winter-
berry holly when its ripe
and soft; consequently,
the ornamental display
remains until mid-winter.
Birds, Butterflies
and Lady Bugs
Certain plants are veri-
table bird- and butterfly-
attracting powerhouses,
providing both nectar-rich
flowers and edible berries.
Black Lace elderberry,
for example, blooms in

early summer with large
clusters of pink flowers
favored by a host of ben-
eficial insects including
lacewings and ladybugs.
Once they have pollinated
the plant, the resulting
fruit is relished by a num-
ber of bird species; human
garden visitors are equally
fond of this shrub with its
lacy dark purple leaves
and attractive habit. It
adapts readily to growing
in a container, making
it especially suitable for
nature lovers with limited
space.
Viburnum is another
excellent option that pro-
vides nectar and fruit.
There are many variet-
ies available, but for
maximum wildlife benefit,
select one that bears abun-
dant crops of fruit, such
as the Blue Muffin with
its dark blue berries, or
Cardinal Candy with clus-
ters of shiny red berries.
Shrubs provide excel-
lent habitat for birds, as
their much-branched inte-
riors make lots of perches
for building a nest and
their foliage ensures good
coverage to hide from
predators. However, to
keep the welcome mat out
year-round, it is important
to include some evergreen
plants in every garden.
Varieties such as Soft

graceful structure and rich
color while providing a
safe resting spot for feath-
ered visitors, a service
theyre sure to appreciate

How to save
on your childs
college tuition
NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE
While it can be difficult to predict what tuition will cost
by the time your child attends college, there are two things
of which you can be sure:
First, the cost of tuition is sure to go up and theres no
way to predict how much it will rise.
And second, a smart way to plan for your childs college
education costs may be to enroll in a prepaid tuition plan.
Prepaying for tuition can help you do what most other
529 plans cant: save on the cost of attending college. And
since new tuition rates take effect July 1st, the sooner you
act, the more you can potentially save.
With student loan debt recently surpassing $1 trillion, it
is important to protect your child from becoming one of the
many students who graduate college having to repay huge
student loans on an entry-level salary.
Prepaid tuition plans such as Private College 529 let
you purchase tuition certificates that are guaranteed by
270+ participating private colleges and universities, includ-
ing Princeton and Stanford as well as smaller liberal arts
schools and research universities. Additional schools can
join at any time and new schools will honor any outstand-
ing prepaid tuition. A semester of undergraduate tuition
purchased through the plan today will be worth a semester
of tuition for up to 30 years no matter how much tuition
rises or what happens in the financial markets.
You do not commit to a particular school when you
enroll in the plan or at any point until your student enrolls
and you redeem your tuition certificates. Since tuition rates
vary among institutions, your contributions purchase differ-
ent amounts at different schools. You can track how much
tuition you own at any of the participating schools anytime
by logging on to your account online.
Your prepaid tuition must be held for 36 months before
it can be redeemed at a member school. The earlier you
prepay, the more you are likely to save over time, but, for
example, if tuition rises at a rate of 5 percent per year,
enrolling today could potentially save you thousands of dol-
lars by the time your child enrolls. The plan offers the same
federal tax benefits as any other 529-college savings or pre-
paid tuition plan and does not charge enrollment, manage-
ment or annual fees; 100 percent of your contributions go
toward the purchase of tuition.
And dont worry if your student doesnt attend a college
in the plan. You can name another beneficiary, roll over into
another 529 account or request a refund. Savers are being
urged to make their contributions by June 30th, before the
new rates take effect.
For more information, visit www.privatecollege529.com.

Being active is critical
for staying healthy so
its a good thing exercise-
related aches and pains,
sore muscles, and foot
and leg cramps dont have
to put a damper on the
activities that people love.
Thankfully, there are many
safe and natural remedies
to keep pain at bay.
Soft-tissue pain often
benefits from rest, ice,
compression and eleva-
tion. While rest gives your
body time to heal, ice is
handy for reducing swell-
ing and dulling pain in sore
spots. Be sure to wrap ice
in a towel to prevent skin
damage and aim to ice
the injured area for about
20 minutes an hour or
as needed, for one to two
days. Gentle compression
may help to keep swelling
in check, while elevation
can also reduce it.
Injured ligaments and
tendons respond well to
increased blood flow, so
moving and working with
a physical therapist may
help you return to pain-free
workouts faster. Applying
gentle heat can improve
circulation to make achy
muscles feel better, and a
warm shower or massage
can soothe sore muscles.
Remember, if you are ever
in doubt about your injury,
check with your doctor.
Still competing profes-
sionally after 45 years, 70-
year-old NASCAR driver
Morgan Shepherd keeps
in shape by being active
every day and looking after
his health naturally. For
Shepherd, the keys to stay-
ing healthy are choosing a
fun activity, eating well and
staying hydrated.
Some people like run-
ning but I prefer to get my
running done on roller
skates, says Shepherd. I
get a really good workout,
plus I hydrate with plenty
of water, before, during
and after a skate.

I have asked my customers what directory they rely
on, most answer PDSs West Shore Book.
My ads have resulted in more calls and walk in business, especially
from the hotels and motels in the area, I also get compliments on the
layout of my ad and the ease of reading it.
I recommend the book for the great customer service. The sta is
very friendly and knowledgeable about small business and the

Making An Impact
Typically, topics cov-
ered at these events will
range from techniques for
improving classroom per-
formance to strategies for
implementing high-quality
curriculum. Many believe
that what makes these
programs stand out is that
they have a real impact on
educators who participate
and, ultimately, their stu-
dents.
This seems to be a char-
acteristic of professional
development programs
that are considered out-
standing.
According to a recent
study by Scholastic, 85 per-
cent of educators said good
professional development
programs had either a very
strong or strong impact on
student achievement.
A Focus on
Development
In addition to con-
ferences and institutes,
ASCD also offers a variety
of in-person and online
professional development
resources for educators
of all levels. These books,
courses, videos and more
aid teachers in the never-
ending effort to meet the
needs of todays diverse
and evolving student popu-
lation.
Promoting Best
Practices
Founded in 1943, ASCD
(formerly the Association
for Supervision and
Curriculum Development)
is an educational leader-
ship organization dedicated
to advancing the best prac-
tices and policies for the
success of each learner.
The theme of this
years summer confer-
ence in St. Louis, Mo., is
Revolutionizing the Way
We Teach and Learn.
The topics addressed at
this event will include 21st
Century Learning Skills,
Classroom Instruction
That Works, Effective
Teacher Supervision, and
Professional Development
and Bullying Prevention.

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS
SYNDICATE
The estimated number of
woman-owned businesses across
the country is 8.1 million. Yet whats
really impressive is that many female
business owners are also mothers,
wives and heads of households.
If you fall into this category or
know someone who does, the follow-
ing tips on balancing work and home
life may come in handy:
nProtect boundaries If you
find yourself checking your smart-
phone during dinner, you might
need to set clearer boundaries
between business ownership and
family time. Separating work and
family time will help you be more
productive at both.
nStay in touch at school
Small-business owners rarely have
time for volunteering in the class-
room, but mothers can still be a part
of their childs educational experi-
ence. Something as simple as donat-
ing supplies shows youre interested
in your childs classroom success.
nShift your schedule Sixty-
three percent of mothers say they
want to be home when their kids
leave for school and at the end of the
day. To accommodate, try shifting
your schedule and conducting non-
urgent business after hours. Dont
be afraid to off-load work to others
when feasible.
nOrganize work and home life
Make a list of your top three orga-
nizational challenges both at home
and at work, and put a detailed plan
together for overcoming the chal-
lenges. If time management is an
issue, try creating a family calendar
that lists everyones daily activities,
including work schedules and fam-
ily time. And avoid working so hard
on your business that your home
becomes chaotic.
nDont let guilt get you down
A study from the Working Mother
Research Institute found that more
than half of mothers who work
report feeling guilty about not
spending enough time with their
kids. Furthermore, small-business
owners are notorious for working
long or odd hours. Try not to be your
own worst critic. Sometimes, being a
mom has to take priority. Push back
business issues to after hours if its
possible.
nLimit your time spent online
Many women spend hours a day
online, for professional and personal
reasons. But tasks such as manag-
ing a Facebook page or website
can become a full-time job and sig-
nificant source of stress. To free up
some time for family, try Deluxes
Web Solutions Package. The time-
saving do it for me package bun-
dles a number of services that help
you achieve a professional online
presence and help your business
rank higher in search engines.
nSeek more advice for managing

ness owners. For additional tips and
