REMINDERS: Submission of Matlab Problems => Tues of 8th week.

Create two problems of your own, one first order and one higher order with initial conditions and solve using matlab. Refer to notes uploaded in the yahoogroup. Include print screen of Matlab window of your solutions. Use Open lab at N302 OR at my matlab class at FRI 12-4pm SB1. Quiz 2 on sat , feb 12, 2011.

MOTION PROBLEMS For vertically falling body of mass that is influenced only by kv and air resistance:

v Falling body

W=mg ground

By Newtons second law of motion, the net force (resultant) acting on a body is equal to the time rate of change for the momentum of the body; or for constant mass, net force on the body and v is the velocity of the body, both at time t. Two forces acting on the body: 1. The force due to gravity, W=mg. 2. the force due to air resistance given by kv, where Net force: F=mg kv , thus Equation of motion of body: For metric: g=9.8 m/s2 or 980 cm/s2 is a constant of proportionality. , where F is the

For English: g=32.17 f/s2. Note: For negligible air resistance, k=0 and Differential Equations of Motion: Given: x = f(t) where x = distance, t=time v=dx/dt where v =velocity a = dv/dt, a = acceleration

Problem 1: A body of mass 5 grams is dropped from a height of 100 ft with zero velocity. Assuming no air resistance, find a) b) c) d) an expression for the velocity of the body at any time time t. an expression for the position of the body at any time t. the time required for the body to reach the ground. Ans. 2.5 sec The velocity and its position after 2 sec. ans. 64 f/s, 64 ft.

Problem 2: A mass of 2 kg is dropped from a height of 200 m with a velocity of 3 m/s. Find the velocity at t=0.005 sec if the force due to air resistance is given -50v N(newtons). ANS 2.69 m/s

Seatwork: An object is thrown vertically upward from the ground with an initial velocity 1960 cm/s. Neglecting air resistance, find (a) the velocity at t=1.5 sec and (b) the time required for the object to return to the starting point. (c) Find also its maximum height. Note: g= -980 cm/s2 (negative for motion upward) ANS, a) 490 cm/s b) 4 sec c) 1960 cm. At maximum height: v=dx/dt = 0. When the body is released vertically upward and returns to its original position we set x = 0.

W=mg For net force along horizontal: A=kv P f N ( ) F = ma ( ) P kv f = m (dv/dt). A=kv = air resistance, f = friction = N=normal force ,

For smooth surface, f=0 F = P kv = m(dv/dt).
