10Read the following text with carefully:
Higher temperatures threaten dangerous consequences: famine, disease, floods and lost
ecosystems. And from sweltering heat to rising seas, global warmings effect have
15already begun. But solutions are in sight. We know where most heat-trapping gases come
from: power plants and vehicles. And we know how to control their emissions: modern
technologies and stronger laws. The Natural Resource Defence Council (NRDC) is
working to put these fixes in place. By shifting the perception of global warming from
abstract threat to pressing reality, and promoting online activism. By pressing business to
20use less energy and build more efficient products. And by fighting for laws that will
speed these advances.
City dwellers face a wide range of environmental challenges: dirty air and water,
dwindling open space, garbage, soot discharging buses, traffic, the impacts of industry.
NRDC employs equally diverse strategies to make our cities healthier and more livable.
25We demonstrate that innovations in building design and manufacturing methods can
reduce wood use and air and water pollution. We work to preserve open space and help
create plans for new urban parks and incentives that revitalize central cities. We fight for
clean drinking water, expanded recycling programs and better and less polluting
public transit.
