Integrated resort Definition Integrated resort (IR) is a all housed in one resort property with a wide variety of leisure

e and entertainment attractions (WIKI, 2011). Actually integrated resort has no universal approach of definition and classification, and recently scholars around the world are doing research and trying to establish a definitive definition and classification for integrated resort. According to the research done by the university of Memphis, they suggested that integrated resort is a resort with a full- service lodging facility, emphasizing a leisure experience by offering a range of amenities and recreation facilities. Serving as the primary provider of the guests experience, also providing services for MISE industry such as exhibition and business meeting, but generally integrated resorts are characteristically located in vacation oriented settings (Eric T Brey, 2009a). The research done by Dr. Eric from university of Memphis suggested the minimum qualification for lodging property to be considered as resort; Providing one signature amenity or anchor attribute Providing five secondary recreation/ leisure/ entertainment experiences Providing one full-service food & beverage outlet Providing Bed- Base must include short- term or overnight lodging Providing Minimum of 25 rooms or other accommodations (exception to minimum for properties with two signature amenity/ anchor attributes) Emphasizing a leisure or retreat environment experience

Concerning the above qualification in order to define integrated resort, some terminologies related to integrated resorts are listed below; Signature Amenity Resorts are required to providing access to amenities / attractions / geographically significant attributes in order to be considered as resort. e.g. golf, ski, beach, casino, wellness. For man- made amenities, they need to be considered full service to be a signature amenity. (Eric T Brey, 2009a) Anchor Attribute A non-typical theme linking tertiary or secondary resort amenities and attributes to provide a signature amenity are considered as Anchor Attribute. To be identified as an anchor attribute, a minimum of five recreation/ leisure/ entertainment ex- couples, family, educational, tropical, and dude ranch. (Eric T Brey, 2009a) Recreation/ Leisure/ entertainment experiences (RLE-E) A secondary amenity that adds to the resort experience is RLE-E. RLE-E is any leisure or recreation activities, which can range from croquet to beach volleyball or organized kids activities. However RLE-E is not the primary resort features, their role are providing a range of activities for guests to participate in. and creating the appropriate atmosphere. These attributes are important, along with food & beverage outlets, in determining whether properties should be included

as resorts once the signature amenity / anchor amenity minimums are met. (Eric T Brey, 2009a) Full- Service The property that provides a range of amenities and services to address customer wants and need is considered as full service; this includes offering a variety of amenities and activities, a restaurant offering 2 or more meal services daily, and enhanced service levels. (Eric T Brey, 2009a) Integrated resort Classification According to Dr. Eric, since the criteria for considering resort were established, he suggested that resort could be classified into these four categories; Destination Resort, Intermediate Resort, Intermediate Access Resort, Specialized Resort (Eric T Brey, 2009b). Destination Resort These properties are seen as resorts in the truest sense. They generally serve as the primary motivation to visit a destination with characteristically high levels of service. Destination resort provide most amenities for guests visit and provide access to substantial recreation or leisure space. Destination resort also frequently have capacity for MISE industry and meet the minimum resort requirement but in additional (Eric T Brey, 2009c): - Four signature / anchor amenities - Fifteen or more unique secondary RLE-E - Three or more food & beverage outlets - Spa / health / well amenities - Multiple shopping outlets - Variety of lodging options Intermediate Resort Intermediate Resorts can be the primary reason for visiting a destination, while guests can have additional reasons for visiting the resort. Generally the properties are removed from major population centers and provide access to substantial recreation and leisure space. Intermediate resort are very similar to destination resort but with the different of their limited scope of signature or anchor amenities. Intermediate resort meet the minimum resort requirements with additional (Eric T Brey, 2009d): - 2 signature / anchor amenities - Ten or more unique secondary RLE-E - Two or more food & beverage outlets Intermediate-Access Resort Intermediate-Access Resorts are generally located in densely populated areas or vacation destinations. Generally they are usually nearby one another and providing access to geographically- significant signature amenities, e.g. beach, ski. Intermediate-Access Resorts may not be the primary attraction for visitors but providing adequate recreation/ leisure/ entertainment experiences to visitors

for connecting the geographically-significant signature amenities with their stay. These resorts must meet the minimum resort requirements with addition (Eric T Brey, 2009e): - Two signature/ anchor amenities - Ten or more unique secondary RLE-E - Two or more food & beverage outlets - Provide direct access to external recreation or leisure experiences. Specialized Resort This type of resort can be located in any location, providing a focused experience around one signature amenity or anchor attribute. Generally tailor-making the guest experience around the primary amenity or attribute and are generally smaller in size in comparing those three resorts mentioned on above. This type of resort can be a complement to the destination for guest as primary attraction. Specialized resort must meet the minimum resort requirement and with the additions (Eric T Brey, 2009f): - Provide on signature amenity or anchor attribute - Provide 5 secondary RLE-E - Provide one full-service food & beverage outlet - Bed-base must include short term or overnight lodging - Minimum of 25 rooms or other accommodations (exception to minimum for properties with two signature amenity/ anchor attributes) - Emphasize a leisure or retreat environment experience
