The Energy Industry:

Tapping into SAP-based solutions for high performance

Energy companies strive for high performance in an increasingly multi-polar world.

In a multi-polar world, one in which the centers of business are not just in the developed economiesenergy companies can be virtually anywhere. In this world, companies need to operate with multiple centers of expertise, innovation and management, and manage workforces that are becoming more dispersed and mobile. In markets around the world, a variety of playersincluding international oil companies (IOCs) and increasingly competitive national oil companies (NOCs)compete head-to-head for resources, customers and talent. In this high-demand, multi-polar environment, energy companies need to meet a variety of local needs and, at the same time, manage from a global perspective to drive efficiency and speed and focus the organization on the right opportunities and challenges. This reality has made enterprise systems a key enabler of success in the industry. Indeed, research from Accentures Institute for High Performance Business, including input from more than 450 executives, has found that enterprise systems can lead to better financial performance, improving an organizations ability to integrate and optimize business processes, as well as analyze for business advantage. But implementing these systems is not always easy. Enterprise systems involve sophisticated and powerful technology that requires companies to have in-depth understanding and strong implementation capabilities to enable them to take full advantage of their investment and their efforts to build high-performance businesses.

Understanding enterprise systems

Accenture conducts research into various aspects of using enterprise systems to drive high performance. A sampling of this research includes:
Enterprise Systems Find the High-Performance Spotlight.
About three-quarters of surveyed companies report greater-thanexpected revenue after implementing enterprise systems. That financial success depends on factors such as effective planning and prioritization of enterprise system initiatives, the ability to manage enterprise systems as an ongoing program and a willingness to approach systems from a long-term perspective.

Using Enterprise Systems to Gain Uncommon Competitive Advantage.

Top-performing companies realize significantly more value from their enterprise systems than do their less successful counterparts. High performers routinely emphasize three primary activities in their approach to enterprise systems: integrating the organization, optimizing business processes and analyzing system data to improve decision making.

New Growth from Enterprise Systems: Achieving High Performance through Distinctive Capabilities.
Leading companies are leveraging enterprise systems to develop distinctive capabilities one of the three building blocks of the high-performance business. Key factors in doing so include tailoring systems, implementing industry-specific solutions and taking advantage of flexible service-oriented architectures.

Ive worked with Accenture off and on over many years starting in the early 80s, and I think its as true today as it was then that its the consistency of quality of staff that we get thats the biggest differentiator."
Industry Executive, multinational energy company

The energy industry is constantly evolving, so we invest in keeping our people, tools and thinking on the leading edge. As part of that effort, we maintain the Accenture Innovation Center for SAP NetWeaver at SAPs development headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. The center in Walldorf is dedicated to developing and delivering nextgeneration SAP-based solutions; it helps us sustain our lead in solution development on the SAP NetWeaver technology platform and lets us provide our clients with early access to new products. At the same time, we regularly conduct research on how organizations can make the most of their enterprise system investments, which helps us constantly sharpen our approaches to implementing SAP (see Understanding Enterprise Systems, above).

With this range of resources, experience and knowledge, we help energy companies implement new SAP solutions or upgrade existing SAP software systems quickly and cost-effectively. We help them take advantage of SAPs extensive out-of-the-box functionality and keep customization focused on the most critical and differentiating areas. And we help them implement SAP solutions that will support the efficiency, speed and flexibility needed to compete in a multi-polar world.

I believe Accenture is a differentiated systems integration firm from the standpoint that the resources, capabilities, delivery and flexibility are excellent. Accenture is always there to help us, whatever our needs are.

An extensive SAP toolkit

As we work with oil and gas clients, we bring a number of unique strengths to help them with their SAP initiatives. These include:

Accentures business process initiative, which focuses on leading industry processes and operational excellence and offers a comprehensive operating model for the energy industry that spans all segments. This model includes energy-specific business processes, process flowcharts, key performance indicator frameworks and capability assessment models. Accenture Delivery Suite, which provides a standard approach to delivering a reliable and consistent SAP implementation for any business function. In essence, this suite provides packaged knowledge in the form of job aids, tools and templates. These help us jump-start projects and provide a solid framework that is used by professionals in our global network to support collaboration, consistency and quality in SAP implementations.

Accenture Advanced Enterprise Solution, a preconfigured SAP solution that uses leading practices, building blocks and implementation accelerators supported by SAP to provide flexible, predictable, highquality implementations. Across a number of initiatives, our Accenture Advanced Enterprise Solution has reduced implementation time by as much as 50 percent for a variety of companies. Accenture developed this solution for the chemicals, metals and mining industries, and we are currently adapting it to the energy industry. Accenture Change Management Accelerator, a collection of proven change management assets for SAP solutions. Change management efforts aid organizations in embracing the SAP solution by helping people succeed with new systems, processes and roles. The accelerator encompasses approaches, tools and practices that can be quickly tailored to a specific companys situation, and that address the full project life cycle of an SAP implementation.

A track record of results

Over the years, Accenture has collaborated with multiple energy companies to successfully bring SAP software into the organization and use it to drive solid business results. For example, we have helped:

A global IOCs North American downstream business to use SAP software in the harmonization of processes after two major mergers. We designed and built processes for the combined retail, fuels, aviation, trading and marketing businesses, and are now running the systems under a 10-year contract for the applications management outsourcing of the companys SAP support and maintenance. With harmonized business processes supported by a stable SAP software environment, the downstream workforce has increased its productivity and been empowered to focus on service. Through the use of the Accenture Delivery Network, the company has seen a 45 percent reduction in baseline IT support costs related to its SAP application support.

An integrated Asian NOC implemented SAP software to link the back offices of dozens of former branches and subsidiaries. We helped implement the solution at nearly 80 facilities and reengineered many of the organization's processes and operations to embrace the systems global best practices. As a result, the companys dayto-day operations have improved, driving down costs and delivering benefits to the companys bottom line. Management also has benefited from improved communication and, for the first time, has an integrated view of operations that supports informed, rapid decision making.

The upstream business of a supermajor oil and gas company to simplify and standardize its processes and replace a variety of custom and stand-alone systems with a single global SAP software platform. This consolidation effort eliminated more than 100 legacy systems, and gave thousands of users worldwide a common system that supports everything from finance to plant maintenance, logistics, procurement and business intelligence processes. The system is enabling the company to improve operational performance and increase efficiency through the sharing of best practices, standardization of business processes, and greater transparency and comparability of information across the organization.

An Asian NOC with oil and gas interests in several countries to implement SAP software to support plant-maintenance operations and provide personnel with integrated information via the SAP NetWeaver Portal component. Service-oriented architecture has been implemented to integrate the plant-maintenance solution seamlessly with the companys SAP ERP application, SAP NetWeaver Portal and non-SAP applications. The effort has helped improve plantmaintenance performance, with increased workforce productivity, better visibility into the maintenance process, reduced training costs and the enabling of real-time collaboration between operations and maintenance teams. For energy companies today, SAP software is a vital tool in the race to compete. By bringing our extensive SAP experience and industry knowledge to bear, we help energy

companies use that tool effectively to target business goals, take advantage of the opportunities presented by a multi-polar world and achieve high performance.
