To begin with, there is an analysis that needs to be done on the way that civilians are directly affected by this

war, more exactly on how they do not benefit from the war, neither as people, nor as individuals. Although, as we have previously stated over all there is slightly improvement regarding human rights (more in detail women rights) and a growth of the countrys GDP, there are drawbacks so severe that one could not possibly speak about a justified war. Mainly, the problem should be seen from the point of view of the great number of death casualties, issue that is recognized even at the highest levels of ISAF command.[1] Regardless of that there is no single official figure for the overall number of civilians killed by the war, as no one is eager to figure out the exact devastation that this war has brought. The estimations made so far, that try to sum up the casualties, show a figure of ??????? deaths. As USA agrees to send 30 000 new troops in Afghanistan [2], actually surpassing the number of troops they have in Iraq [3] and bringing NATO effectives to 150,000, they just continue to fuel up a fire that literally burns people. In this context is even more alarming the fact that every year the number of overall deaths is rising, with 2009 being the bloodiest year so far for coalition troops and 2010 looking just as deadly [4]. Since 2001 1,273 american soldiers have died and many more have returned home injured, SUA being the main troop contributor. From the other side, things look still alarming, as more than 70% of Afghan casualties are civilians, collateral victims. Such an example are the air strikes by the NATO-led force in august 2010, when persons were killed only because they were so unfortunate as to be in the wrong place at the wrong time problem that was solved by ISAF sent condolences to the grieving families. [5] . Putting in balance the very big number of innocent casualties and the goal of exterminating terrorism, which is implemented in a catastrophic way, it is obvious that such a great death toll is not justified. Furthermore, the harm is even bigger as afghans are affected in many other ways. The ones that are lucky enough not to be killed are some times captured and tortured by invading soldiers. Unfortunately we cant even approximate the number of afghans that fall in this category . Nevertheless, there are some notorious cases of soldiers torturing civilians such as the one when an American soldier was taken into custody due to the fact that a detainee was found dead in his holding cell[6]. The death victims or the wounded can be counted if you want. But no one could put into figures the impact of the war on the people. And that is another important aspects that once again doesnt justify the intervention of NATO in Afghanistan. As severe armed conflict take place all over the country, the population is in a very fragile condition, due to the fact that their properties are affected in a very high degree. Households are often damaged by cross fires, entire fields of cultivated plants are wiped off the face of the Earth and the few roads are also destroyed. All in all, afghan property is destroyed trough this war and in the end, when and if the war is over, the afghans wont have a country anymore, but just a patch of earth. Also, there is the problem of damage to the cultural property of Afghanistan that can not be repaired in any way. Unfortunately, Afghanistan founds itself in the situation of adopting an strategy not so desirable for a country and that is getting the movable artifacts out of Afghanistan borders, in order for them not to be destroyed or actually stolen. This action has started in 2004 in collaboration with UNESCO and orchestrates the movement of the cultural treasures to different museums in different countries around the world, such as Switzerland[7]. Still, even with this drastic measure

there remains the problems of monuments and other type of cultural patrimony that cannot be moved, and in consequence are doomed to be destroyed. A country which has suffered a long period of time, due to the soviet conflict and from the Taliban reign now faces another obstacle: the so called anti-terrorism war which has caused Afghanistan to record raising levels of corruption each year. Instead of setting the country on track, the war has the result of bringing bribery levels to one quarter of GDP[8] as getting out of prison in Afghanistan can be resolved with 60,000 $. 1-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Afghanistan_(2001present)#Civilian_casualties 2-http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8388939.stm 3-Ben Farmer http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/7762893/UStroops-in-Afghanistan-surpass-number-in-Iraq.html 4-http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8388711.stm 5Paul Tait http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/NATO+strikes+kill+Afghan+police+civilians/342736 9/story.html 6 - KATHARINE HOURELD - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/asiapacific/us-soldier-in-custody-after-death-of-afghan-detainee-in-cell/article1763973/ 7- http://whc.unesco.org/en/activities/257 8By Matthias Gebauer and Carsten Volkery http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,672828,00.html
