INTRODUCTION

i.

COMPUTER NETWORKS
A computer network is a system of interconnected computers and peripheral devices. For example, it may connect computers, printers, scanners and cameras. Using hardware and software, these interconnected computing devices can communicate with each other through defined rules of data communications. In a network, computers can exchange and share information and resources.

ii.

COMMUNICATION
Communication is referred as the exchange of thoughts, messages or information as by speech, signals, writing or behavior. Computer network is important for wide range communication, low cost communication and high reliability by having multiple sources of supply.

MOBILE COMPUTING

2.1

DEFINITION
- Mobile computing is a generic term describing one's ability to use technology while moving, asopposed to portable computers, which are only practical for use while deployed in a stationary configuration. An example of mobile computing devise is a PDA which is a cell phone which allows the user to communicate from far away and contains many different types of application such as GPS. The frequency of a PDA ranges from a low 125 KHz to a high 13.56 MHz.

INTERNET TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

Protocols used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as

Voice over IP or VoIP. VoIP is one of the Internet technologies that allows a user to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. VoIP is a method for taking analog audio signals and turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_over_IP

Blog
A blog is basically a type of website, like a forum or a social bookmarking site. As such it

is defined by the technical aspectsand features around it, and not by the content published inside it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog

TYPES OF NETWORK
3

4.1

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication among

computer devices (including telephones and personal digital assistants) close toone's person. The devices may or may not belong to the person in question. PANs can be used for communication among the personal devices themselves (intrapersonal communication), or for connecting to a higher level network and the Internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_area_network

4.2

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication

infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network

4.3

WLAN
A wireless LAN (WLAN) is a wireless local area network that links two or more

computers or devices using spread-spectrum or OFDM modulation technology based to enable communication between devices in a limited area. This gives users the mobility to move around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to the network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_LAN

4.4

WiMAX
WiMAX, meaning Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a

telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 3 Mbit/s broadband speed without the need for cables. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.16standard (also called Broadband Wireless Access). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimax
