Swindell pads Outlaw points lead with Eldora victory

ROSSBURG, Ohio (May 5) In two of his most recent appearances at Eldora Speedway including Friday night tire issues have left veteran Sammy Swindell deflated. But in the World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car feature on Saturday, the only shredding for the Germantown, Tenn., driver is what he did to the field. Swindell led all 30 laps to capture his fourth WoO victory this season in the concluding night of the Outlaw Thunder presented by Goodyear doubleheader weekend. In the UMP DIRTcar Modified feature, Wayne, Ohios Jeff Babcock benefitted from a late caution that bunched the field to take the lead and run off the final five laps of the 18lap feature. In the two UMP DIRTcar features at Eldora this season hes finished first and second. Swindell started second to pole-

But Saldana started reeling in Swindell over the next two laps, trimming that nearly two-second deficit to 0.6 seconds on lap 14. Swindell never relinquished the lead but worry entered his mind on lap 24 when Jason

Sides shredded a tire and again on lap 28 when Kraig Kinsers tire went flat. At the Kings Royal in 2011, Swindell was charging out of turn 4 to the sure victory when he shredded a tire and limped past the line to finish second. On Friday night, Swindells night was slowed when he cut a tire with seven laps left to finish sixth. I really hated to see those because the tires do get pretty warm here. Having those two yellows back-to-back we thought we might lose some (tire) pressure, said Swindell, who holds an 11-point lead over Donny Schatz for the WoO points lead. I was thinking about the Kings Royal and about not making

Swindell, as he did in the previous caution, chose the outside on the double-file restart. The pack engulfed Saldana on the restart as his engine faltered. Dale Blaney took advantage to jump up to second but didnt have time to chase down Swindell. I wasnt stuck to where I had to run right up against the curb, said Swindell, who ran along the outer wall but maneuvered around traffic both high and low on Eldoras banking. I could move down and that really was the key in the lapped traffic. We could just breeze right through there pretty easy. Blaney, Big Game Tree Stand teammate Craig Dollansky, David Gravel and Daryn Pittman rounded out the top five. Saldana finished seventh. We werent really, really good the first 15 or 20 laps but overall it was a great night, Blaney said. I was going to run fourth until those cautions but we got through to second. Dennis Baker, a spokesperson for Engage (an arm of the Ohio Soybean Board), spoke to the Coldwater Kiwanis about Animal Agriculture on Tuesday, May 1. Dennis is a Darke County native, from Bradford, who has worked in the agricultural and business industry for many years. He used a slide presentation to illustrate the many changes that have taken place in agriculture in the last fifty years. He compared a 57 Chevy with a current automobile that has greater comforts, safety features, and improved design. Farming, he said, has made many of the same type of improvements. Farm animals live in well-designed buildings, are healthier, and better fed than they were in the past. He addressed several myths about farm animal confinement and treatment that are commonly held by persons who are not educated about current farming practices. These beliefs sometimes lead to legislation that is detrimental to food producers and costly to food consumers. Dennis noted that agriculture is the number 1 industry in Ohio and that today each farmer feeds 144 people.

Question & Answer with Dr. Ronald C. Anders D.V.M.

During the veterinary exam, we are often addressed about an animals behavior. Is it just the puppy or will he out grow this or how do I make them quit this behavior are just a few of the issues that pet owners ask about. Over the course of the next couple of weeks, I will address some of these questions. If your pet is exhibiting any sort of aggressive or worrisome behavior, you should seek the advice of your veterinarian to address any issue that you have concerns about. There are many misconceptions about a dogs behavior, and we will try to help you see the truth behind these. We have been hearing in the media these days many issues on pet aggression. As we will address with some advice from Dr. Valerie Tynes, a behavioral specialist, aggression is only one behavioral issue that threatens the quality of a pets life. Its embarrassing to talk to my vet about my pets behavior, because I feel I am the cause of the problem. Do not hesitate to ask your veterinarian about any problem that may affect your pets health and well-being. Most problems are manageable if not curable. The sooner you seek qualified advice, the more likely you can successfully treat the problem. A variety of factors play a role in the development of behavior problems, such as genetics, early experiences (especially between the 4th and 14th weeks of age), and their environment. You can contribute to worsening the problems with inappropriate training methods, but it is highly unlikely that you caused the problem. Medications and medical conditions can contribute to behavior changes. Your veterinarian is the best and first person you should consult when your pet starts to exhibit questionable behaviors. I should not take my puppy to puppy classes until he has been fully vaccinated because he will get sick. The critical period for socialization for your puppy is from the fourth week to the fourteenth week of age. This is a crucial time where your puppy learns about his environment, other dogs, and people. Poorly socialized dogs are more likely to exhibit behaviors that make unsuitable pets. This can result in relinquishment to an animal shelter or euthanasia. Unfortunately the likelihood of death due to poor socialization is greater than the likelihood of illness or death due to contagious diseases. Puppy classes should: mix puppies of similar age, require the first set of vaccinations several days before the class, be held on a surface that can be sanitized, clean all waste and disinfect the soiled area immediately, and not allow any puppies in class that show signs of illness. Proper socialization early can save a pets life. It is the best way to ensure that you end up with a pet that is well adjusted. Proper socialization is the key to you and your pets happiness for years to come. The reason my dog is aggressive/fearful/shy is because they were abused as a puppy. No matter the cause, dogs that exhibit these types of behavior frequently may be suffering and need to be evaluated by your veterinarian. These animals can be helped in many ways. Proper socialization may be even more critical in these individuals. Abuse may be a possibility in dogs whose exact histories are unknown, but the most common cause of fearful behavior is inadequate or inappropriate socialization. Fearful behavior is also heritable. Some dogs are born with a predisposition of shyness or fearfulness. Ronald C. Anders, DVM, CVA

They will not sacrifice quality, but will get the best calue for the dollar. Some of their tips include hands on projects. On one of their trips they did paintings with a Bob Ross instructor. Other trips included decorating cakes and doing pottery. Incorporating these projects is very popular with the travelers. Some of their current tours have ethnic meals included. Otterbein celebrates grand opening of enrichment center

ST. MARyS April 27, 2012 A historic day was celebrated Friday, April 20, at Otterbein St. Marys Senior Lifestyle Community. Residents, board members, employees, donors and community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a new life enrichment center. The center, a joint partnership between the Auglaize and Mercer Counties yMCA and Otterbein, represents one of the first partnerships of its kind with a lifestyle community in the country. Executive Director Fred Wiswell said, Our journey began in the fall of 2007. Since that time, a visioning committee, a capital campaign committee and a life enrichment center task force met regularly to vision, to obtain charitable gifts and to plan every facet of the facility no small tasks! the job over to someone else. When given the proposition, Jake couldnt believe what he was hearing. But Al took specific notes. He researched history online and was able to give Jake exact information on who, what, when and where the principal players in the game would be. He also had cash from the mid-century, a social security card and a Maine drivers license with the name of George T. Amberson. Al was serious and made careful preparations for Jake to do this. This bit of warning he gave to his successor: history is obstinate and does not want to be changed. Obstacles that you cannot imagine will try to block your intentions. Be aware. Leary of what he might be getting into, Jake agreed to accept the challenge and stepped back in time. The town of his first residence was not the friendliest place. Derry, Maine had seen some hard times and was still recovering. After finishing some business there, he went to Florida and settled sixty miles south of Tampa. The climate suited him and he found work as a substitute teacher. He figured he needed something meaningful to fill his time until 1963. Understanding that he had to eventually move towards Dallas, he packed up his worldly goods and, in July 1960 headed west. The town of Jodie, Texas had a sign on the outskirts that said, WELCOME STRAnGER! Jake decided this might be the place to spend the next three years. He came to love everyone and everything about Jodie and finally found a place to call home. He also met the love of his life in Jodie. This raised a big question as 1963 came closer. The original plan was to kill Oswald and then make it back to the present. But now Jake does not want to come back. King has written a suspenseful novel without any of the terror normally associated with his books. It keeps the reader guessing, but contains a safety net since the story is told as a first person narrative by the main character. A crime story with a bit of a twist, I recommend 11/22/63, especially to anyone who has an interest in history. It can be found with the new books FIC KIn.

11/22/63 By: Stephen King Reviewed by: Georgia Rindler Ive always steered away from Stephen King books. If I want to have nightmares, I can read the Wall Street Journal. But I was assured by several patrons that this was not a typical King horror novel. Jake Epping is a high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine. He literally stumbled into the past---1958 to be exact. His first trip was initiated by Al Templeton, owner of Als Diner, home of the Famous Fatburger. A few years earlier, Al discovered a rabbit-hole that enabled him to travel back in time to September 9, 1958. Ground chuck sold for fiftyfour cents a pound at the Red & White, which enabled him to sell his specialty for a buck nineteen. In his weekly trips he also made another discovery: he could alter history. And thats where the story begins. If a major event does not occur, that could change the course of our country. A big one was close to 1958; the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Al decided he could live in the past for five years and prevent Lee Harvey Oswald from killing the president. That most certainly would affect the Vietnam War; prevent Robert Kennedys death and possibly Martin Luther King Jr.s too. Al spent four years in the Land of Ago and was planning on taking care of the situation himself. That was until he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Medicine at that time did not have the skills to treat this terminal illness, so he returned to the year 2011. Unfortunately he received the same prognosis in the present. He realized he needed to hand

TIMING
Observations ... by John Bruns

Timing is everything, the man once said. I initially did not always understand that concept, but my times are changing. Saturday was one of those beautiful spring days by the lake, it was even better since we have had so few since March. The concept of good weather is a factor of timing. nice or nasty, The Bride had a list of chores and by 3 p.m., I had removed the tree droppings from the rain gutters, mowed the grass, and trimmed the hedges. My timing was good because it was the first Saturday of May and that meant, the Kentucky Derby. A good friend once took me to Keeneland race track for an enjoyable day of watching beautiful thoroughbred horses and women. Jim was very patient and I learned about interpreting a racing

program and even a little about placing a variety of bets, but my basic knowledge of this sport of kings is in reality, almost nil. yet in the early spring the birds return from their winter homes and the TV commercials promise an exciting Derby and a large share of nostalgia. It is hard to forget the fact that the race is coming. In fact I felt an almost civic duty to take a seat in the recliner and watch the Derby, even if it is the only horse race I might see this year. I am aware one should drink mint juleps on Derby Day, but the Bride could not find a good recipe so I had to settle for a brew from a pop- top can. I had learned in earlier years that the Kentucky Derby was just one of many races competed on that Saturday at Churchill Downs. I previously had assumed that the Derby was the only thing being run that day. We have one football game on Super Bowl Sunday, one baseball game each day of the World Series,

Sports
or one game at the nCAA basketball finals. I believe that most of the 165,000 people at the track would prefer just one race and more party time. But they have been doing the race in Kentucky for 138 years and probably see no reason to change the agenda. The Kentucky Derby in horse racing and the Masters Golf Tournament are iconic events that owe their popularity in part to great timing on the calendar. The Masters is played in Georgia in the first week of April and the Derby is run the first Saturday in May in Kentucky. Messengers of spring are welcomed by us all and these two sporting events are similar to robins and croquettes in the back yard. One aspect of timing caused by television however, is a source of irritation; starting times for major sporting events. There was a time the World Series games were played in the sunshine. It required some ingenuity to watch or listen to the games while at work or school,

May 10, 2012 Page 13

but it was worth the effort. years ago nCAA basketball tournament games and the Superbowl were actually started before the bedtimes of kids and seniors, but that is no longer the case. I was ready to watch the Derby on Saturday afternoon. My outside work was complete, refreshments assembled by the recliner and the grill was ready for a post race meal. It was then I discovered the expected start time of approximately 4:30 was actually 6:30. Changes in my recliner time and supper plans are not high on my list of favorite things. I know there are a lot of people in western time zones who can help the ratings if they have event starting times that allow them to get their yard work done first, but I am old and like the way it used to be. If they someday decide to put up lights at Augusta national Golf Club so the Masters can be shown at a better time slot, I will start watching the cooking channel.

forward to coming back for the Kings Royal weekend. Eldora Speedway owner Tony Stewart arrived in Ohio following qualifying for Sundays Aarons 499 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama he qualified eighth for the Sprint Cup race to compete with the second night with the Outlaws. The reigning and three-time nASCARSprint Cup Series champion qualified ninth and finished 18th in the feature. Stewart won the Last Chance Showdown to reach the main event. The victory was the 19th at Eldora for Swindell and his first since April 8, 2006. Only Steve Kinser (35) has more WoO wins on Eldoras all-time list. David Gravel topped the two-lap qualifying session for the second straight night with a 13.213 around the half-mile oval. Gravel also was fast qualifier Friday with a 13.228. It usually doesnt happen for me here but we found something, Gravel said of his qualifying sessions.

(Continued From Page 1) McMahan, Trey Starks, Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild all won heats. In the Modified feature, Aaron Orr led the first 12 laps before tagging the wall in turn 3-4 to bring out a caution and surrender the lead to Matt Westfall. Westfall fought off a slide job by Babcock on lap 13, but couldnt hold off a second one as Westfall brushed the wall in turn 3-4 and Babcock raced past. Babcock charged ahead of the field and beat Westfall to the finish line by a comfortable 3.4 seconds. Jesse Bitterling, Joey Kramer and Rob Williams finished among the top five. I thought I could get him the lap before but I didnt have the clearance, Babcock said of that first pass attempt of Westfall. I thought the next lap Ill set him up good to where I can get him. Everybody is so fast around here. The race track is perfect like this, everybody is fast and you can go anywhere. It makes the racing a lot of fun. Jesse Bitterling, Babcock, Scott Orr and Westfall all won heats. Joey Kramer and Scott Bowersock won B-Features. Eldora Speedway hosts Mobil 1 Family Fun night on Saturday, May 19.
