2 Preconditions
2.1 As the user, you are responsible that the safety and operating instructions of any other systems, environment or container where the FIREMIKS unit is installed are followed. The unit must only be used under the working conditions specified. Any deviation from that requires the producers permission. The unit is designed to dose fire-fighting liquids (=additives) in fire-fighting water. For all other applications, contact must be made with ARETEK AB for an approval, if possible to give such. For information about each specific FIREMIKS model, working conditions, connection types, etc. please consult the respective data sheets.

3 Working principle
3.1 FIREMIKS is designed with two displacement units direct coupled to each other through a drive coupling. FIREMIKS dosing system is driven solely by the extinguishing water flow - no other additional energy is required. The water flow from a main water pump goes through the FIREMIKS water motor. The power of the water flow generates a circular rotor motion, which is transferred to the gear pump over the direct drive coupling. The gear pump pumps foam concentrate into the water motor outlet and where the water/foam solution is created. The admixture ratio is determined by the volumetric capacity of the foam pump vs. the water motor. Since the water motor and the foam pump are directly connected with the drive coupling, the system is by that flow-proportional. Dosing is automatically adjusted from the amount of water that goes through the FIREMIKS. Admixture ratios are valid when using foam liquids in the foam pump.

3.2

The FIREMIKS can be used with all common foam liquids/fire-fighting additives. As for example standard detergents, synthetic AFFF, AFFF-AR and protein based FP, FFFP and FFFP-AR. Should there be any questions and thoughts about different additives, please contact us and state additive type and brand.

4 Installation Design
4.1 4.2 Key dimensions for each model can be found on the respective dimensional drawings. FIREMIKS model types for installation 4.2.1 Fixed type

The FIREMIKS -F-type is designed for fixed installations to a foam tank. Equipped with an automatic air relief valve to make it possible to suck foam liquid from below the unit. Flushing of foam pump is done automatically when foam inlet is closed. Optional: Separate suction tube, suitable for fixed installations in for example a fire truck, where there is a need for suction from an alternative foam supply See 4.13 for more info. 4.2.2 Demountable type

A combination of Fixed and Mobile types. Quick-connect couplings added on water motor in- and outlets and on connection to foam tank. A frame and handle is included and it may therefore also be used as a Mobile unit. Complete with separate suction tube, flushing line and an automatic air relief valve. 4.2.3 Sprinkler type

The FIREMIKS -S-type is designed for sprinkler/foam nozzle-type installations connected to a foam tank placed above the unit. Note! Foam liquid should always be present in foam pump by gravity-feed as there is no automatic air relief valve on this Sprinkler type. 4.3 The unit should normally be mounted with the inlet and outlet of the water motor and the pump shaft in horizontal position. Other positions are possible but we recommend you to take contact with us first for guidance in these cases. The FIREMIKS complete unit is designed to be held in place by using the mounting plane with four (six) threaded holes on the bottom of the water motor. See table 9.1 for the key dimensions of the mounting interface. You will also need a support under the foam pump bracket to balance the weight but the support should not be bolted or fixed rigidly to the foam pump bracket, this is to avoid possible unwanted tensions. A support with a rubber mat or rubber feet is appropriate. The Demountable type already has a skid mounted in this manner. For alternative ways of fixating the unit, contact us. Install the unit with the connections pipes on the water motor in-and outlet. It is very important that there are no movements on the water main line that could create tensions through the connections onto the water motor. If any such movement exists on the connecting pipes, a separate support must be made to stabilise the connection pipes before connecting to the FIREMIKS. Make sure there is enough space around the unit to enable easily accessibility for service and maintenance.

Temperature tolerances: the unit should preferably be installed in a frost-free environment. If this is not possible it is important to drain the unit completely before frost season. It should not be exposed or used in higher temperature than 50 degree Celsius. This is both valid for the ambient temperature, and for the water temperature. Note! Be observant for direct solar radiation that can heat up the unit above 50 degrees. Contact us if higher temperature tolerance is needed! The water flow must be in the direction shown by the arrow on the upper side of the water motor. (Note! The direction of rotation of the drive shaft is reversed compared with the direction of the water flow arrow.). The unit can optionally be configured with the water flow in the opposite direction, in such case tell us when ordering. See also Appendix 2, Dimensional drawing. The suction line should be connected to the Selector valve Foam Liquid/Flushing Water (No. 4 on Flow chart on Data sheet) on foam pump inlet. Connection type and size is found on the respective data sheets for each model. Note! It is very important that there are no air leakages anywhere between the tank and the foam pump. The suction system should be pressure tested (preferably with a manual hand pump up to about 2 Bar) before the start, to expose possible air leakages.

4.10 Internal diameter on suction system should not be less than inlet diameter on the additive pump. Avoid sharp 90-degree bends. Any other check valves, ball valves, etc. should also have at least the same internal diameter as the Selector valves. 4.11 It is advisable to put a transparent suction tube/hose just before the inlet of the additive pump to make it easier to see when/if the suction tube is completely filled with the fire-fighting additive. This also minimizes the risk for tensions from the suction pipe to be transferred to the foam pump. 4.12 The below applies to Fixed and Demountable models: 4.12.1 We recommend that the foam tank lowest possible foam level is placed above the inlet of the foam pump on this fixed type of FIREMIKS, because this makes the start of the suction immediate. In that case, you will need a valve in the suction line which is normally closed when the unit is not in use, and which will open automatically when the systems starts. Otherwise the foam will slowly leak through the Automatic air relief valves. The selector valve present on the unit before the suction hose can be used for this purpose. 4.12.2 You may also install the foam tank below the inlet of the foam pump. With this installation you do not need the above described valve in the suction line. The disadvantage is that the foam pump needs some seconds before it has pumped out all air through the Air relief valve (=priming) and suction of foam liquids starts. Note! NPSHR at the foam liquid inlet of the FIREMIKS at max water flow and viscosity 35 cSt is approx. 6m. Priming capability and possible suction height depends on suction pipe design and associated losses, the viscosity of the foam liquids to be used and the water flows used at start-up (for priming). Always test your installation that priming of the foam pump is possible in the working envelope required and that suction height (when the tank is almost empty) does not adversely affect the admixture rate.

Instead of priming, it is possible to install a foot valve at the bottom of the suction line, keeping the suction line filled with foam liquid once the system is primed. However, this requires that the FIREMIKS needs to be manually primed before it is stand-by. 4.13 This paragraph applies to Sprinkler models: The lowest possible foam level in the foam tank must be above the inlet of the foam pump on this Sprinkler type of FIREMIKS to ensure gravity feed of foam liquid. 4.14 The max. flow in the system should be checked with a flow meter if water source pumping capacity is higher than the max flow of the FIREMIKS. If there is a risk that the water flow could exceed the stated max. flow, there should be some kind of flow limiter placed before the unit. 4.15 Even if the water source has a capacity equal or below the max flow capacity of the FIREMIKS, over-speeding can happen at the start if the main pipes are empty and the flow-limiting parts are located after the unit. This risk for over-speeding could be minimized if the FIREMIKS and the piping are completely filled with water up to the flow-limiting parts. Not suddenly starting the main flow, but gently filling the piping before the flow limiting parts, is also helpful to prevent over-speeding of the FIREMIKS. If there is a risk that the water flow could exceed the stated max. flow, there should be some kind of flow limiter placed before the unit. 4.16 In the case that the pressure capacity of the pumping system is higher than 12 bar, it is recommended that a pressure-relief valve is installed in the main system before the FIREMIKS. 4.17 Note! Before using a new piping system before the FIREMIKS, it must be flushed out well before the assembly of the FIREMIKS in the system. There are often foreign particles from the welding etc, left. Take care so other foreign particles do not come into the unit during installation. Keep the protection caps and plugs on the unit on as long as possible. 4.18 FIREMIKS is designed to operate with clean water. No abrasive particles should be present in the water flow; otherwise it will wear much quicker. In most cases the FIREMIKS can cope with sporadic particles up to 2 mm size. If there is a risk of particles entering the FIREMIKS or when polluted or contaminated water is used, the piping system must be designed so that there is a suitable filter or strainer where this pollution can be collected fully, placed before the FIREMIKS. We refuse any responsibility for blockage of the water motor by any foreign objects in the water, whatever their size. 4.19 If the installation is to operate for an extended period of time with extinguishing water only, a by-pass with suitable valves should be installed around the FIREMIKS system to avoid unnecessary wear. 4.20 NOTE! As in all safety-related installations, there should always be a back-up plan. Never design the installation in such a way so that the water flow through the FIREMIKS is the only source for fire fighting water.

4.21 NOTE! It is extremely important that a unique shut-off valve is installed before the FIREMIKS-unit. This is to ensure a risk-free service/maintenance, i.e. the risk for sudden rotation of the water motor due to unexpected water flow will be eliminated by closing this valve. When working on the FIREMIKS, put a clear sign on this valve stating: Do not open, maintenance work in progress. 4.22 For wet pipe systems it is recommended to install a drain valve after the FIREMIKS-unit with a capacity of about 100 - 200 lpm to facilitate the rotation of the water motor during inspections. 4.23 Consider when installing that dry running of the FIREMIKS foam pump is not allowed. 4.24 Surrounding piping: 4.24.1 It is possible, with only one main water pump, to design the piping system so there is plain water from some outlets in the system and at the same time additive admixed water from other outlets. The requirement is that the minimum and maximum flow limits on the FIREMIKS are kept. 4.24.2 The hose/pipe system after the FIREMIKS can be divided in many different ways, also vary in heights, as long as the min. and max. flow limitations of the FIREMIKS are kept. 4.24.3 Different nozzles in the system after the FIREMIKS can be opened and closed independently of each other without affecting the admixture, as long as the min. and max. limits in pressure and flow of the FIREMIKS are kept. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding the installation of the FIREMIKS!
