Media Evaluation

Q1. In what ways does your media use, develop or challenge real forms of real media products?
While planning and researching for the creation of my music video I specifically focused upon the conventions and codes present within existing music videos and decided how I would convert and challenge them in my final draft of my product. I mainly analysed more modern music videos opposed to older music videos as I wanted to assure that my final product would attract our target audience and kept up with todays trends. I followed my newer music videos as I knew it would be easier to recreate with the technologies present today. I have structured the narrative of my music video upon the following aspects assuring that the product will fit well within my chosen genre: I have also researched deeply into the image and representation of Hip-hop artists. Studying the conventions preferred by our target audience. I have made specific connections between the lyrics of the songs and the visuals of the music video to ensure that our audience can easily understand the narrative. I have subverted many of the Hip-Hop genre characteristics, to raise conversation and debate. Mainly focusing the Hip-Hop Genres objectification of females, I have challenged these conventions through a different representation of women.

With these factors taken into consideration I applied them into my music video to ensure that my final product looked as professional and follows the qualities of the successful and widely received Hip-Hop videos.

The representation and Image of our Artist

For the initial branding of my artist I firstly collected images and profiles of well known hiphop artists by creating a collage. I did this to find a trend among my researched information thus applying it to the universal image of my artist. I specifically researched into the most popular hip-hop artists today by watching their most popular music video which was most compatible with my ideas. I focused primarily upon the typical costume and demeanour prominently used in their music videos and found in most circumstances the artists were wearing popular A Collage of popular Hip-Hop Artist used for street wear or wearing a combination of Initial branding. professional and casual wear while holding a power stance and a serious facial expression whenever idle in their music video. Also In many circumstances I found that the colour schemes the artist mainly wore and used were either very minimal or even black and white. In following the conventions of Hip-Hop Music videos of which have a more serious music videos I continued these fashions and making the music video in black and white as well dressing my artist in bland colours. Moving more into this decade of Hip-Hop I have noticed that more artists have taken to the more abstract or minimalist appearance opposed to the later Hip-hop artists who would often promote their wealth and status through elaborate expensive fashion so in taking that into consideration we have toned down appearance of the artist within the music video, were we have dressed more ordinary clothes featured in popular street wear brands as well as showcasing items of expensive brands. In many circumstances in my research the artist wore jeans, a plain white tee and a hat of some sports team or a beanie so we incorporated that image into the costume of our Artist within my final product to ensure that we followed the preferences of our audience

Typical use of combination of business/professional mixed with casual designer clothing and the signature white tee.

Connections between the lyrics within the music and the visuals of the music video
I first noticed this aspect in music videos when I had to choose a Music video to recreate. In Lil Waynes How to Love the feature of linking the actions within the visual to the narrative within the lyrics is used consistently. Lil Wayne uses this technique through the doubling scenes; he uses opposing circumstances to tell the narrative. Within the chorus of the song Lil Wayne sings the line You had a lot of crooks try and steal your heart, never really had love he features the protagonist kissing a heavily tattooed male who stereotypically looks like a gangster and a criminal thus playing on the word crooks physically showing in the visual the protagonist showing signs of affection to somebody who typically looks negative. He also subverts this connection of visual with lyrics later on within the song showing the protagonist in the reversed situation where her love interest gives off the impression of being a respectable student.

A medium shot showcasing a passionate kiss between the female protagonist and her love interest of whom looks like the supposed Crook

A medium shot showcasing a flirtatious conversation between protagonist and innocent looking love interest.

Another example of these techniques is when Lil Wayne sings the lyric You had a lot of moments that didnt last forever, now you in corner tryna put it together. How to Love. he features the protagonist as a child watching her parents arguing during a prison visit referring that the child will witness this behaviour and put it together and believe that type of destructive relationship is acceptable and that is how to love. He then shows a reverse of the situation as the child gazes at her parents getting married, showing that the child is learning how to love and is given a more positive representation of a relationship.

The child watches her parents get married; she is given a good example of love

The child watches her mother and father argue over a prison telephone.

Our music video is a recreation of Lil Waynes How to Love also as the lyrics tell a very simple narrative which would be easy to recreate as a visual. While planning the structure of the narrative I ensured I had a lyric list as well as the song playing with a specific reference to time, I ensured that I included visuals that were reflective of the lyrics. The first prominent example given is when Lil Wayne sings when you were just a youngin your looks were so precious... You cant have a man look at you for five seconds without you feeling insecure The music video shows one of supporting characters gazing upon her pictures as a child and shows signs of being nervous and insecurity when she realises people are laughing at her.

One of the supporting characters gazing at a picture of her as a younger child.

One of the supporting characters looking away highlighting her being insecure. When Lil Wayne sings Its hard not to stare the way you moving your body like you never had a love The domestically abused character cowers away, her body language drastically changes from a power stance to making herself appear smaller and weaker. It plays on the lyric moving your body like you never had a love as it shows that the destructive relationship between the character and her love interest. It adds to the narrative as it shows the how the character never really experiences real love.

Special Effects
The Split-screen The Video contains an advanced technique of 3 split screen editing this is to ensure that the audience is constantly aware of the separate narratives and to avoid confusion. Our Coursework group had decided that we wanted to place a split screen within the beginning however we decided against as our audience had remarked that the video was too long. Nevertheless we added in the split screen through Final Cut Pro placing at the end of the interlude. The split screen creates juxtaposition in the video; as the characters believe they are alone in their situation their situation they all end on the same notes that they dont wanna live in this world anymore. The split screen underlines the narrative further as it gives an insight to the characters frame of mind. The split screen follows the conventions of Hip-hop as we took inspiration from RnB/Hip-Hop group Destinys child who used this technique in their remake of The Beegees Emotions, we both feature a multi narrative music video which feature depressing storylines as they intertwine with each other they eventually join together similar to ours during an interlude. The disadvantage of having a split screen during the video is that in some aspect the audience members will find it hard to focus upon all the stories at once however we have counteracted this by using a split screen when the characters are united.

The use of continuous split-screen in Destinys Child Emotion

A 30 second extract of my final draft of the video where the split screen technique is used.

Special Transitions and Sound effects

We used certain transitions during specific times of the video; we used a black fade into colour whenever there was an important change into the video. We also used an additive transition as it gave the video a blink affect which is prominently used in cinematic products. It refreshes the audiences mind each time and it makes the video appear shorter and more relevant. The Blinking effect conducive to the heartbeat sound effect as it induces the feeling of panic among the audience. The heartbeat promotes escapism as the audience is able to relive the emotions of the character in the initial part in the beginning.

The use of Additive transition proving a cinematic approach

Slow Motion effect

We introduced the slow motion effect is used at the climax of our video; it is used when the domestically abused character is attacked by our love scene. The use of slow motion added to the intensity of the situation. As the climax of that storyline builds up the fight is seen to be an outburst of emotion. We made the scene slow motion to dramatise the event and to ensure that audience retention was at an all time high. The visual of the beating was used to draw emotion from the audience. We gained inspirations from the slow motion effect from the Lil Waynes How to Love where the characters running scene was made in slow motion to show the intensity of her decision whether to have an abortion or not which has been recreated through our video during the fight scene. We also use the slow motion technique as the artist walks away at the end of the video this to symbolise that the character is walking away from the troubles being told in the narrative.

Hip-Hop characteristics and the subversion of the Hip-Hip genre: the objectification of the women
How my final product converts to traditional Hip-hop conventions Hip-Hop consists of other various genres associated with music of black origin. The genre Hip-Hop is forever developing and it becomes commercially more popular in society today. It started of as an art form of expression, where music artists used lyricism to tell a narrative. The subject matter present within the music videos were usually an observation on negativity in society affecting black culture for e.g. Racism, poverty, unemployment, persecution and crime. In following the traditions of the usual Hip-hop serious hip-hop subject matters I have created a multi narrative exploring the use of drug abuse, domestic violence and self hate. Due to the prominent appearance of materialism through celebrities the conventions present Hip-Hop Videos have changed. More and more conventions of music videos have changed, once to stimulate and enlighten people to now flash commercial success and wealth. With the recognition of these new social trends I decided to revert back to the first aspects of hip-hop making my narrative more informative rather than conceptual. Cinematography The cinematography present in Hip-Hop videos is used to exhibit the narrative behind the lyrics in most cases. In many Hip-Hop videos the use of establishing shots are used to depict the setting of the narrative thus giving us an insight to events likely to occur in the video for example. Hip-Hop Rapper Nicki Minaj uses an establishing shot of a big Palace like castle allowing her audience to foreshadow and assume that she is playing a princess and she is going to a fairy-tale like ball to meet Prince Charming. I have followed this example by structuring the beginning of my final product upon establishing shots; each sub narrative has its own establishing shot to foreshadow the potential end of the narrative. The close up shots contributes to the mise-en-scene of the video. The appearance of brands and institutions are very popular with Hip-Hop music videos presenting materialism. The more popular and expensive the product of the brand is the more audience is likely to glamorize and idolize the artist. The brands present are usually very popular with the African-American/Black communities however this is more apparent in conceptual videos. The usual conventions of lighting in Hip-Hop videos are dependent upon the setting. A black and white colour scheme can sometimes promote documentary theme further promoting realism. Example given a low angle shot of Kanye West - Homecoming. I have mainly taken inspiration from that music video and followed the idea of making my music video black and white as I believe it provides the narrative with a more documentary type feel and promotes realism. It also places more emphasis upon how serious the subject matter is however In other other cases colour schemes consist of vivid and Neon colours this is eye catching to an audience and is usually used in videos of less severe subject-matter. For example: a medium shot of Eve - Tambourine.

Representation

Representation Hip-Hop videos there are many forms of representations through the use of characterization. Characters are used to represent specific figures in today's culture. Representations are more considered when the subject-matter of the music-video is serious. For example in Kanye West's music video for Jesus Walks there are three main characters: The prostitute, the tramp and the gangster all representations for the social problems of crime, poverty and unemployment affecting black culture in America. Ultimately the story-line of the video dictates that all three characters are 'saved' by Christianity through a multi narrative. Representations in Hip-Hop videos are sometimes used to the present all those aspects that oppress black people specifically AfricanAmericans. Female Representation: Objectification Long shots and full body shots are very common when recording 'Video girls' they enhance the 'Male Gaze' which promotes sexuality through the exposure and sexual acts of women. Women are made to glorify the sexual appearance and men are to be entertained and enjoy the presence of 'Video Girls', typical use of females within a lesser serious Hip-Hop music. The female Representation tends to be quite negative in some cases or quite stereotypical. As Hip-Hip is a very male orientated, the independence and empowering image of women is very minimal. In many circumstances the women within Hip-hop are ever depicted to ever be the dependent girlfriend, a single mother or a video vixen. In my final product I have challenged these conventions in a sense were I have removed all sexual references pertaining to women all the women are fully clothed and reject the notion of the female gaze. However I have carried on the convention of objectification of women by showing women stereotypically as a victim of the pressures of society. In my final product males are vilified to some extent as the love interest of the domestically abused character is shown to be evil. I have also carried on the traditions of using a predominantly black cast within the final product which is commonly found in most Hip-Hop videos.

A typical Hip-hop video, with the use of a video vixen to promote the male gaze

An extract from our final draft: the three characters confessing their hatred for society. The lack of importance upon appearance and more focus upon personality and context of what is being portrayed.

Q2. How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts? Magazine Advert Album Cover

Back Cover

Inside content: Track list

Inside Content: Message from the Artist

Connection between Album Art and the Magazine advert cover with the Final Music Video Similarities In order to create an album art that was reflective of the content within my final draft I had to research upon the context and meaning of the song. The song talks about females being corrupted by their surroundings, in placed in a destructive setting they fail to learn the true aspects of loving others and themselves. With such an emotive meaning I knew I would have to display the theme of passion within both the album art and the music video. I exhibited passion through the colour scheme of album art through the colour scheme, the dominant use of red showcases dominance and passion which is effectively shown through the structure of the narrative. We decided to carry on carry on the use of grace scale within our final draft as we wanted to stay consistent in the use of minimalism. In both cases the artist is seen to have lack of emotion within the face and body language. In the Music video he is seen to be idly playing the guitar similar to the album cover and advert her has subtle facial feature, we did this to ensure that the photography and visual of the artist didnt detract away from the purposeful editing, consistent focus upon colour scheme and the heavy emotion in the music video. Differences The colour scheme of the album art is Black and White as well as the feature colour of red. I mostly used the contrast of light grey and red upon a black back ground as I wanted to make the artist stand out like he were on a blank canvas, however I did the opposite to this in the Final draft of my music video and let the colours complement each other better especially when filming the medium shot of the artist upon the wall. I wanted to dethatch him from the storyline so he as fly on a wall watching the music video. I wanted to focus more upon the continuance of the narrative rather than focus upon the appearance of the artist. The connotations held behind greyscale are appropriate to the content of the music video. Traditionally products in black and white are seen to be very serious which reflects our narrative really successfully. It is also juxtapositional as grayscale usually shows simplicity this opposes our multi narrative storyline and the combinations of shots. The contrast between the both the ancillary is very effective as in final draft of my music video we particularly focusing more upon the characters, limiting the appearance of the artist. However in comparison I have however contrasted this with a complete dominant appearance of the artist, with specific editing to illuminate the artist deflecting from the narrative of the music video. The ancillary tasks are quite complementary to the final music video as it ensures that the audience are completely aware of the identity of the audience.

Ancillary Task: Album Art

Comparison of DigiPak to the Music Video My digi pak also had to have some relevance to the genre of music and the actual video. My front cover had been edited by taking pictures of my artist that we took in a photo shoot and cropping them to create the image on the cover. I told him to wear what he was wearing in the music video which was a hoodie and some jogging bottoms so I was able to take the whole look and using it on all my ancillary tasks. I then took a picture of him slightly threatening facial expression and used this to link to The album name which was Come and get me. As many hip hop tracks have a lot of explicit content I made sure that was seen on the front cover so the target audience knew who the artist was. I did this so that the whole hip hop theme could be kept all the way through the product. I focused the red colour scheme on the music video and used the name of the video to create the background for it. Since it was called How to love I prominently used the colour red which is a connotation of love.

Q3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback? In order to receive audience feedback I searched for different mediums of which could view our work in drafted stages. I used centred a group of twenty individuals of whom were fans of the Hip-Hop genre and I gave them a questionnaire of their preferences to the identity of the artist for the ancillary task. After collecting the results of the questionnaire we applied the most popular responses to our final works consequently finalising the detail of the artists name, album name and track name. Every time we completed a draft of our music video we would showcase our work to the twenty individuals looking for feedback of what was like, disliked and what we could improve. We used the mediums of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to showcase our work to the sample as each controlled their own user generated page. The progress of our work became easily accessible and viewed by others nationwide. Music Video Drafting First Draft Our music video begun with a singular narrative of an insecure girl whos depression and bullying eventually led to her suicide. We used a combination of shots of the artist mixed with the narrative the use of basic medium shots and long angle shots. The video was thought to be quite boring and lacked in diversity. A prominent response from our sample showed that our draft lacked in diversity and a gripping narrative therefore the video lacked in audience retention. The audience also felt that the narrative held no properties that would keep their retention therefore they insinuated that we include more a more complex editing software to add more special effects. The audience also felt that the insecure individual was very clich however it was very easy to follow. Acting upon their feedback I proposed a new idea of adding in more storylines to ensure originality and decided in order to give it a more professional appearance we moved from the editing software iMovie to a more complex software Final Cut Pro allowing us to add more advanced effects, in doing so we made the whole video black and white. Second Draft The music video now consists of three diverse storylines that occur one after the other each end of the mini narrative highlighting how the character leads to their downfall due to their lack of ability to love. The footage was changed to grayscale to give a documentary type theme. After showcasing this draft to our sample, the overall response enjoyed the improvements however many were distracted by mistakes and in consistencies within the narratives. In certain parts of the music video became quite confusing to the audience and with the structure of the music video showing the mini narratives played one after the other, the content detracted away from a music video and appeared to be more of a soap opera/ drama however in most responses, many found the content more entertaining and gripping with the new editing. Acting upon the feedback of our audience we decided break up our footage and intertwine the narratives to make the video more understandable and more reflective of a music video. Our group decided to re-shoot specific scenes as they were seen to be inconsistent with the quality of the camera and the setting. I had improved to organise a schedule to film to ensure that when filming specific shots they were filmed in one day to make sure the setting was consistent as I many circumstances the same footage as filmed upon different days and the weather and lighting proved to be different in each shot.

Additionally I decided to use a technique quite popular in vloging were individuals held up post-it notes of their mental thoughts, we felt that this would be a solution to the confusion within the narrative as it ensures the story will always be reiterated. Third Draft Our coursework group had decided to reverse the structure of the music video and the placed the fatal ending of the characters within the beginning of the narrative to add to the suspense of the narrative. The music video begins with scenes of their downfall as a potential circumstance then leading onto the events of how this occurred, with appearance of the artist. Audience members felt the music video was more entertaining on a whole and followed the conventions of a professional music video however the video still contained some minor mistakes and required further editing. Audience member found wrongly rotated shots looked very peculiar and the new added shots of the artist were out of sync with the music however overall the narrative was easy to follow and was entertaining as well as informative. In order to improve our editing skills our coursework group joined a one day editing class upon final cut pro at Hertford Regional College were we learnt the new techniques of split screening specific shots. On the advice from our audience we made minor changes to the editing of the new footage of our artist but left the footage of mour narrative as we felt it were at its final drafting stage. Forth Draft (Final Draft) The structure of our music video remained partly the same however we introduced an interlude towards the middle of the music video which is prominently used in Hip-Hop media especially within albums and music videos. The interlude further adds to the narrative, where the characters voice their mental distress and explain how they feel about their circumstance. Our music video now contained more complex editing techniques with improved transitions and special lighting used with within specific scenes. Our audience finally agreed in a group viewing that our music video was up to standard and agreed that our music video fulfilled the conventions of Hip-Hop and the brief.

Ancillary pack drafting In order to create a consistent full package I focused the ancillary pack upon one central theme. To create an initial theme that would be carried across all the products of my ancillary I created an album cover as I thought that I could best display my creativity. I would propose each draft of the album cover and the most favoured I would use and carry on the themes in all aspects of my ancillary task. In doing so I created three album covers in drafts and showed a sample of twenty people asking for likes, dislikes and improvements. I would take their feedback and thoughts of my own and improve the album cover each time till I got to the final draft.

First Draft I created this Album cover using the programs Microsoft Word and Paint, downloading a custom made font called Maybe Maybe Not. When giving a questionnaire to my sample of what they liked disliked and what could be improved the overall response felt the colour scheme was very basic and lacked in professional editing. The font didnt really convert to the genre of Hip-Hop. Some voiced that the information usually present upon a usual album cover hadnt been used effectively. However overall thought the colour red would be a good colour to carry onto the second draft. Acting upon their feedback I decided to download anew editing software specialising in graphic designing so I could use more advance photo editing and I also asses more colours into the colour scheme to add more diversity. Second Draft I created this album cover upon the Corel PaintShop downloading another custom made font called Pinocoya black and still using Maybe Maybe Not. When giving a questionnaire to my sample asking their opinion for this draft in comparison to my last draft many felt that an improvement had been made. They felt the new font had fitted well to the genre of hip-hop but however felt the scale of the typography was structured didnt fit well to the page. Many felt the sizing of the typography over shadowed the photo of the artist. The feedback also corresponded to the link between the picture and the album name, many felt the new photo of the artist didnt link to the meaning of the typography as well as the size compared to the text didnt work effectively. Many also felt the product lacked in editing and still lacked in professional touch, the overall image was too basic. Acting upon their feedback I took lessons in the software and downloaded upgraded version using more professional editing. I scheduled a new photo shoot asking the artist to pose as accordingly. I down scaled the text and increased the size of the central image. However in following the advice I kept the type of font the same.

Final Draft I created this draft upon Corel PaintShop X4. After creating this draft many felt that the drastic improvements made to the final product was very effective. The response mostly showed that they enjoyed the colour remove and thought the cropping of the image showed skill. The dark colour scheme fitting the conventions of Hip-Hop very well and the graphic of smoke intensified the image. The Font fitted well upon the page and was easily identifiable. However many still thought that the font size should still be increased however I acted against this feedback and decided to keep the font size the same. Most audience feedback was positive and many felt that no improvements needed to be made therefore I made this draft my final draft. I carried on the theme upheld in this product and distributed it evenly throughout my ancillary pack.

Q4. How did you use media technology in construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Blog work I decided to showcase of stages of Research and Planning through the medium and blogging, the control of user generated websites have been proven to be more effective. I decided to use a blog as communication with my coursework partners as well as my teachers would be easier and direct. Also my work would constantly be live upon the internet that way I could always receive feedback from anybody of whom had the internet making my work completely accessible. I have an experience with working with HTMLs therefore using a Blogger allowed to use these skills effectively. I used a video bar, so I can make sure my inspiration behind my artist can constantly be view by any viewer on my blog. The identity of my artist will always be reiterated.

Total number of page views I receive, this will let me know how popular my blog is becoming.

The efficiency of posting any draft of footage I have created and my analysis and comment upon it open for anybody to view and comment upon.

With the use of a comment section I was given instant feedback on how to improve my products from other people other than my sample. I took outside feedback into consideration where appropriate. In most circumstances the comment section was used by my teacher of who gave me consistent feedback upon my work which was really timesaving and effective.

A conversation between my teacher and I, telling me what can be improved.

We used a label bar giving our viewers an easier access tour blog whether they could see step by step how we managed to create our music video

This showed me the demographic of who is viewing my page, due to the content upon my blog it was predicted that I would gain views from America as I am doing analysis of an American video. What was surprising was the many views I received from Russia

I used this list to ensure that I kept upon schedule on whatever posts that I needed to posted and what I had already drafted. This was essential was it kept me organized.

Programs used for Ancillary tasks

I used these rasters to layer my work accordingly presenting the main image above the secondary image.

I used these menus to edit the photos, placing the grayscale, hot coat waxing and false colour effect upon my photography. I used the side menus to crop the photography and set the colour scheme

I found the Corel Photoshop X4 very easy to use as it provided me with a blank canvas where I could use accurate sizing needed to ensure my album art fitted the conventions of an official album artwork. The program gives a step by step guide making it very easy to grasp and use for all parts of my ancillary task. I have created past media coursework upon this program and found that it was very supportive. I however had to work quickly as it was a trial therefore I could not complete all the editing I wanted as I was cut on time.

Technology used to capture and film for our final products For all photography and filming we used Nikon L810 digital camera as it held 16.1 mega pixels and a 28x optical zoom thus ensuring that the zoom was top of range and would remain in great quality. It filmed in high definition, providing us with an excellent finish upon the video quality. We were accustomed to the features of this camera before the coming of this project therefore we found it very easy to use.

The Projection of the final draft of our music video

I have used YouTube to showcase my final draft of my music video. YouTube is a medium of which showcases thousands of famous artists music videos world wide of all genres. As YouTube is available to most countries of the world I was able to do more intense research into music videos of the Hip-Hop genre. I used YouTube to view videos and use them as inspiration into my final draft. I used the qualities of their website to my advantage as I used their extension of Google Analytics to view the most popular audiences that view HipHop websites. In most circumstances it proved to be Young Adults and teenagers in particular males. I used their Recommended watch sections which showed me relevant videos to the one of which I wanted to create, which gave me a deeper knowledge of trends usually apparent in Hip-Hop videos similar to mine giving me more ideas of what techniques I should apply to follow the conventions of Hip-Hop. Final Cut Pro With the professional features available in final cut pro I was able to use advanced transitions between each shots such as Additive dissolve and fade to black and I have been able to crop certain footage and place editing effects upon them improving the visual quality. I used this software to make the final draft of the music video black and white. This software also allowed me to create a split screen which was a key finish to the narrative. This software allowed footage and audio to be easily shift-able therefore it ensures that the visual was in precise sync to the audio.

I used Facebook as a platform for feedback from all of our final drafts, this was effective as our individual Facebook pages we had approx 600 friends each therefore our video had been exposed to a wide margin of people and we received a variety of feedback and comments.

Conclusion I felt that I achieved every objective in the coursework brief and I created a successful HipHop Video. I feel that overall I created a professional final product that followed the conventions of the Hip-Hop genre and challenged them when appropriate. To improve my final product I would have scheduled more time for filming and photography giving me a wide selection of content to choose from giving more to edit. I would have created more drafts so I could receive more fluent audience feedback ensuring that I created a product that was especially favoured by my target audience. I would applied more time to the presentation to my blog to make it even more accessible to my target audience so I could have more assistance in the actual final draft. Overall I am quite satisfied with the quality of my work.
