HOW DO EFL STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT THE GRAMMARTRANSLATION METHOD?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN ENGLISH AND WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TEACH ENGLISH? BY: ADRIANA LUCERO GARCIA CORREA
Initially, taking a look at the first chapter called "The Brief History of Language Teaching" from the book "Approaches and methods in language teaching," written by Jack C. Richards, we can realize that the mid-nineteenth century, the English language did not arouse much interest among the population and when it was done teaching, by the Foreign Language Teachers, the most common technique was by reading and translation of different texts, classics mainly from language to language: English-Spanish, Spanish-English. The few publications of the period were about English dictionaries and grammars; master the English language was read and translate different types of text on a test. So far, there is still a method that could help cover all language skills and of course, speaking and listening, were not considered and was left to the student learn to speak. First, the Grammar-Translation method was originated to teach dead languages such as Latin and Greek. From this, Modern Languages teacher of the nineteenth century focused on that it was necessary to teach the student to focus on learning the rules of grammar and its corresponding to the application in translation passages from one language into the other. And, of course, the vocabulary of the target language is learned through direct translation from the native language, the language is taught from lists of single words. In the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth century, the professor showed to be the authority in the classroom learning, which prevented the student was creative and innovative self-learning process and sometimes the application of this method in language teaching, student-created the thought that perhaps he did not succeed in their learning and above all, feelings of frustration and boredom, as the initial goal was accuracy rather than fluency by use of language. Sometimes during class, the teacher imposed a workshop, and devotes himself to ask the students if a student's response to a question was not correct, a teacher selected a different student to give the correct answer and this caused not pay the class for feedback viewed topic. First, during the micro-teaching, the student role, I could notice that the readings in the target language are translated directly and then discussed what they read in the native language and that teachers pay little or no attention to the sub-skill of pronunciation in the English Language. Also, in applying this method of teaching, the teaching of grammar with explanations in the native language (Spanish), and then all this theory was applied in the production of sentences through translation from one language to other. Although, I think the vocabulary is the most important part in the process of learning a language. If you do not know the words can not be used.So the primary objective is to learn vocabulary in different contexts. Moreover, in applying this method various techniques available in an English class, some are still used today. For example, the translation of a literary passage, sometimes it is important to do at certain times as there are words in English that their meanings are ambiguous, ie, the meaning of the word changes with respect to the context in which it is located. This technique

also leads to the practice of using words in sentences. For that reason, it is acceptable still use these techniques in different classes to make learning fun. Subsequently, the technique is the development of reading comprehension questions, and students need to have analyzed any reading to better capture the way the message that it leaves. It is important to understand that in all processes of learning a second language, especially English, students use as a vehicle of study, their native language to learn a second language. The third technique is the use of antonyms and synonyms, as the first achievement of a beginner learning a second language within the standards of learning, is to have the ability to describe objects, people and places, which is essential to know different adjectives. Then there are the cognates. I believe that this technique is essential, as these words are the first to be acquired by the apprentice for the similarity in their translation in English, as car = car, intensive = intensive, and so on. The fifth tool is the deductive application of the Rule, because it is essential that the teacher has the ability to present examples of grammatical rules in order, that their students have a good concept of tenses. The following technique is fill in the blanks of a proposed activity by the teacher, because with this technique, the teacher will know if the student has understood the subject taught in class. Then, is the art of memorization, since according to my experience, having the ability to memorize and repeat the words leads to good learning. And the ultimate tool of this method is the composition of texts, since this way the teacher know if the learner has acquired the knowledge and if you know the words to relate logical sense in English. In my point of view, I consider that one of the basic principles of this method, the role of translation plays a very important role, since for any student of a foreign language, mainly English, is considered the first choice of study. Although, I found that there was no need for students of that time, the attitude to master the four English skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). And, the grammar-translation method was the easiest tool for a teacher, because, in fact, did not require a teacher to speak English well or make a good preparation for the lesson during the height of this method teaching. Actually, many public schools in Ibague, the use of language is the main vehicle used by some English teachers to teach his class, because the intensity in these institutions is not adequate time for there to be a good acquisition English, so that teachers resort to teaching a class with 80% in Spanish and the remaining 20% is for the little use of English, using the technique of translating words and phrases. But totally not imposed this method, but coexists with the traditional form mixed methods. Finally, I think it's important to know the vocabulary, handle and use, through conversation, is the most effective way to learn English.
