Sustainable Features

WIND SCREEN: MICRO WIND TURBINES THAT BOTH HARNESS THE POWER FROM THE WIND BUT ALSO ACT AS A SHADE DEVICE.

This proposal relies as little as possible upon the power grid and maintains a spirit of a self-reliant and exible building strategies. This proposal features slow building strategies in the following ways:

Power Generation
Solar Components
1. Izen Company and Soltech have created a photo voltaic PV-TV exible panels that allow 10% light transmission and maintains consistent thermal properties. This product is intended for the glazing. 2. Solar Ply, by Nano Solar Company is used for the roof solar collectors. The Playable material allows for a curved roof to still utilize solar panels.

3. Using the orientation of the building towards the wind, the exterior walls utilize micro wind turbines; with an approximate diameter of 6, both to harness energy and to help with air circulation.

Site Strategies
Site Orientation
1. This building is intended to be less invasive to the site by using a foundation of either piles or wheels. This also helps to decrease heat loads on the building by using natural air circulation around the building.

Vegetation

2. The site currently has many old growth trees. This proposal keeps as many of those trees a possible to create a natural canopy for the deck and yard, while still allowing the solar panels to capture the sun.

3. This building will have biodegradable toilets, which do not require a septic system or sewer hookup. This decreases the a ect upon the site, by reducing water consumption and allows for the gray water to be recycled back into the yard or home.

Wind Components

1. The micro wind turbines create a natural air circulation in the home.

2. A Living Wall system is installed as the main room divide between the living room and kitchen. This vertical garden system helps to recycle and refresh the air while providing a garden space for the interior.

Water Storage
Collection Process
1. The main building utilizes a small well which is used for all fresh water requirements and pumped to the moveable components. Since the north and south buildings have moveable features, the connections between the main house remain exible and detachable for when the bedroom buildings move.

Viessman Solar Thermal Evacuated Tube System

As people we adapt our clothing to our climate, this buildings orientation and faades makes it possible for the building to put on a thicker coat or put on a pair of shorts depending on each seasons. As the climate changes and the weather gets warmer the north and south components shift away from the main house, allowing for natural air circulation. When the weathers cools, the building retracts and slides into the main house to conserve energy and heat.

1. Residential Water Pump is powered by Solar Panels. 2. Viessmann Solar Thermal Evacuated Tube Systems provide the energy to heat the water.

1. SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) is a locally made product from Federal Way, WA, USA and uses polystyrene sandwiched between OSB (Oriented Strand Board) to create a lightweight, insulated prefabricated panel.

INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

LIVING WITH NATURE IS VISIBLE THROUGH THE MAIN DINING ROOM AREA. THE BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE KITCHEN CONNECTS TO THE BEDROOM BEYOND, WITH A STUDY LOCATED BELOW.

Air Circulation Patterns

Daylight Strategies

1. Natural air circulation by elevating the building creates a consistent air movement, and in the Northwest where mold is a considerable problem this will help increase the lifespan of the building. 2. Air is brought in by the louvers on the roof an through operable windows. 3. Warm air rises and escapes through the roof.

During the warmer parts of the year the roof opens to allow for natural ventilation and di used light. During the cooler months, the building shifts such that more direct light is allowed and the roof remains closed to contain the heat

WIND TURBINE DETAIL

THE WIND SCREENS ARE HINGED FROM THE ROOF PLANE WHICH ALLOW FOR THE WIND TURBINES TO BE FOLDED INTO THE ROOF STRUCTURE AND BE PROTECTED DURING EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS.

LOUVER DETAIL
OPERABLE LOUVERS ALLOWS FOR THROUGH VENTILATION AND EASY OPERATING ACCESS FOR OCCUPANTS.

1. Water is pumped through a well. 2. The water is stored until needed. 3. Hot water is warmed by the use of a solar evacuated tube system. 3. All gray water is ltered and used for ushing toilets or living wall gardens or for exterior gardens.

Water Recycling Process

1. Rainwater and runo is drained onto a permeable paving system of plastic or concrete interlocking grid system. This plastic or concrete allows for plant material to remain fully grown while supporting the structure of the building. 2. The water is ltered through a process of gravel and soil. 3. The grey water is stored in underground tanks. 4. The water is distributed throughout the building for watering purposes.
