(01) There will be two midterms, one nal and one make-up examinations. The examinations will have classical, essay type problems. In the exams NO FORMULA PAGE will be provided. (02) A missed exam or experiment is replaced by its make-up. Make-up is permitted only in case of illness or serious emergency. For an illness the student must bring a medical report from or approved by the Medical Center (METU). In case of emergency, the student must apply to the course coordinator. For a make-up permission, apply to Room 427 (4th oor), get a petition form and follow the instructions. A student who does not have justication or fails to apply within three days of missing an exam or an experiment will receive a zero for that exam or experiment. For lab make-up see the second page. (03) Percentage weights: 1. midterm 22.5%; 2. midterm 22.5%; nal 35%; laboratory 10%; web-based homework 5%; attendance 5%. (04) Attendance is compulsory and any schedule conict is not accepted. When there is a schedule conict a student must change her/ his section with another section with no conict. To change the section get a petition form from Room 429 (4th oor) and, return it to the same room by Friday, 02-Mar, 17:00. Attendance will be followed and evaluated by the course section instructor. For full attendance a student will be given 5.0 points (for half attendance 2.5 etc.). A student registered late must inform the course coordinator and her/ his instructor. (05) The Mastering Physics (MP) web-based homework system (http://www.masteringphysics.com) will be used for graded home-works. In order to do the web-based homeworks, a student needs to buy the textbook with Student Access Kit from the METU Bookstore. Please go to the given www address to learn more about the MP. You will be informed when and how to enrol in the MP course for Phys 106. (06) Laboratory work is an essential part of the course. A students must do ALL 5 experiments. Failure to complete even one experiment will result in grade of FF. A repeating student who has done all 5 experiments and with a previous lab grade 50 is not required to attend the lab this semester, but she/he must ll in the form that is available in Room 427 (4th oor) and return it to the same room by until Friday, 02-Mar 17:00. Any student, including those repeating, with a lab grade < 50 will receive FF. (07) Objections are permitted only in the times announced and any objection later than the announced time is not accepted. (08) All announcements will be sent to your METU e-mail address. It is your responsibility to keep your METU e-mail address operative at all times. Check yourMETU e-mail address regularly in order to be informed. (09) A free innovative online resource of the text book is available at: <http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/product/Physics-forScientists-and-Engineers-with-Modern-Physics-and-MasteringPhysics/9780136139225.page>. The site is highly benecial and we advise you to visit it regularly. (10) Please visit <http://www.physics.metu.edu.tr/genphys/> to see past exams and the search database. (11) The information given in this guideline may change. (12) A student may NOT take Phys 105 and Phys 106 together in the summer term.

How to succeed in this course:

The course topics that we will cover in Physics 105 and Physics 106 are among the greatest intellectual achievements of humans. Do not be surprised if you have to think hard and work hard to master the material. You can perform very well in this class if you follow this time-tested system: Take this course seriously, starting on the first day. That means scheduling study time everyday, just starting today. Read the chapter material before the lecture. If you read it first, it will be fully understood or realized faster during lecture. We will not only repeat what is in the book - especially definitions. Lecture is for making sense of what is in the text! Read with a pencil and notebook. Take notes on your reading and try to write down questions you may have. If you ask those questions in class, we will try to answer them. Come to class. Attend every lecture. Stay involved in lectures. Participate, engage! Be an active learner, not a passive listener. You must constantly ask yourself: Does this make sense? Do I understand it? How would I explain it to someone else? Start the homeworks early. If you wait till the last day, and you get stuck, you will not have time to finish it. Give yourself the time to work and understand. Remember that it is possible to have a perfect homework score by putting in the time and effort. But first: Do the reading. Do not attempt the homework without studying the chapter first. Do not try the homework until you finish the reading. Write out your solutions to MasteringPhysics problems and save them. This will help you remember your thought process when you study for exams. Work together. Do not get isolated. Physicists often work in groups. You need to do your own thinking, but talking to others is a great way to sort out your thoughts. Do not get behind. It is very hard to catch up. Do not skip anything. Every new concept rests on a previous one. Please, get help early if you feel you have difficulty with any aspect of the course. We are here to help! Do not give up! You can perform very well in this course - it just may take some time, energy and effort. Just reading the text, attending lecture, and doing the homework is not enough. You have to understand the material. Here is the Test of Understanding: If you can explain the material, in words, to someone else, without referring to the text, then you understand. This course is not about memorizing; it is about understanding.

Being "good" at physics problem solving comes from practice. Physics problems usually involve two steps: a decision about which principles and concepts of physics apply, and then a determination of the answer (which usually involves a calculation). Tutorial homework concentrate even more on the principles and concepts, and your ability to explain what you are doing. We encourage you to talk about physics with your friends. The thing to talk about is not which number to put where (the calculation is the easy part), but the reasoning that helps you decide what to do with the numbers.
