Rural Education, Welfare And Resource Development Trust

(REWARD Trust) FOCUS The primary focus of REWARD Trust is the rural, marginalized, first generation children around 30 km radius of Kalpakkam / Anupuram.
(in villages lying East of Cheyyur - Thiruporur (ECR-OMR) Road, North of Cheyyur - Chithamur Road, West of Chithamur - Madurantakam - Chenagalpet (GST) Road and South of Chengalpet Thiruporur Road)

The Trust is run on a ZERO OVERHEAD basis. What we receive for a purpose is completely spent for the purpose. VISION Since these children have only the rural government schools as their gateway for liberation, REWARD by conscious choice works only with these schools in coordination with the respective Parents Teachers Association (PTA), the Head Master / Mistress, and the Panchayat. These children lack the essential domestic demagogic space, are robbed of peers by the rapacious private schools and get almost zero personal attention at school. For these children, in academics, what they learn in school is all that they can learn. So the compelling need felt by REWARD to enhance the educational ambience in these schools! MISSION While the government norm for the teacher student ratio is 1:40, REWARD Trusts ideal is 1:10, 1:20 and 1:30 at the Primary, Middle & Higher School levels. The operative strategy is to first appoint teachers where there is a deficiency in the 1:40 norm, second to appoint subject specific teacher where there is a need and then gradually reach the ideal. The functioning strategy is to avoid all forms of ego rankling issues with government servants. We have found that this allows our teachers to work smoothly & in cooperation with government appointed teachers. PROCESS The appointment of teachers is through an interview held by the trustees, in the respective school, in the presence of the HM, PTA President & Panchayat with a preference to local youths when all other parameters are equal. REWARD Trust has taken a well thought decision not to hold a panel of teachers and then place them in schools that ask for a teacher. Every school is treated as a new entrant into the REWARD fold and

every interview is conducted afresh. The selected teacher is under the administrative control of the HM. Honorarium is paid by REWARD Trust QUALITY ASSURANCE All the teachers selected have to compulsorily attend a monthly refresher programme. The programme is held in each school in a round robin manner. In the programme, the teachers are given training to deepen, widen and improvise on content delivery of the knowledge base. They are encouraged to get their doubts clarified and difficulties addressed. Exchange of experiences in handling difficult children / situation is continually nudged. Honing of problem solving skills is emphasized. Experts in various disciplines are brought in to talk on specific topics to enliven the learning process. Periodical tests, project works, group discussions ensures that the latent talent in each teacher is brought to the fore. GROWTH, OUTCOMES & METRIC for PERFORMANCE From the time this work started in 2005 with 4 teachers in one school, today, in 2011, it has expanded to 19 schools with 45 teachers. In all 87 teachers have got the experience of working with REWARD and 32 schools have benefited from REWARD Trusts work. The number of students who are directly / indirectly getting nurtured, currently, by the activities of REWARD exceeds 7000 ! Compelled with a choice between NO Teacher & BAD Teacher, REWARD opts to recruit BAD teachers if, during the interviewing process, it feels that the badness is not entirely the teachers responsibility. REWARD Trust has the confidence that it can, over time & cooperation from the teacher, erase the badness in teaching. And in over 95% cases it has succeeded in its task. The teachers are removed if REWARD fails to erase badness even after repeated attempts. We are now getting correlated results pointing to enhanced performances all around. In the public exams (X & +2), over the years, the schools pass % has increased from below 20% to over 70% within fluctuations. Some schools have given 100% passes. The pass % in the subjects handled by REWARD Teachers hovers above 80! The individual students score, too, has progressively crossed the 80% bar. From ZERO, the number of students crossing this BAR has climbed to over 80 in 2011. Suguna Memorial Award, instituted by one of the Trustees (an annual outlay of Rs 1,00,000/-), rewards these achievers.

The maximum score reached in X is 482 / 500 and 1093 / 1200 in +2. The number of students taking to higher studies has also shown a steep increase. THE NEXT BIG STEP Having achieved very good performance, REWARD Trusts next ambition is to improve & fortify learning outcomes in these children. From this year it has started the SMART Tests for the 6th to 9th students in schools under REWARD Trust. With substantial prize money being offered, by a local philanthropist ( an annual outlay of Rs 1,25,000/-) , to intra school toppers, inter schools toppers and those who cross a preset bar, this Self Motivation Assessment by Reward Trust, is a carefully crafted Temptation Induced Scheme that aims at persuading prospective children to progressively move over and above rote learning. The monetary prize indirectly acts as seed money for these poor children when they pursue their higher studies. The test papers are calibrated to be much above the school routine exams but positioned at a level that they can jump to grasp without losing hope in despair. REWARD Teachers too have to take these tests. They play a critical role in the smooth conduct of these tests. They also carry out the essential aspect of discussing these test papers with the students post evaluation (a kind of tutorials after the assignments are done!) We expect a big multiplier effect in this attempt of the REWARD Trust. In 5 years time, we hope to see these children participating in all ALL INDIA EXAMS in all disciplines! Self reliance will be all set to follow!! BUDGET To sustain the current level of activity, (about 50 teachers in about 20 schools catering to about 7500 rural students around Kalpakkam), REWARD Trust would need a budget of about $ 100,000/- ( ~ Rs 50 lakhs ). Every $ 2000/- would support one teacher. REWARD Trust has a current capacity, if appropriate funds are available, to handle about 150 teachers spread over 50 schools. Five hundred people contributing $ 200/- (Rs 10,000/-) a year would ensure that REWARD Trusts current services continue unhindered. Since 2005, REWARD Trust has been predominantly (to about Rs 35 lakhs) supported by ASHA FOR EDUCATION, Silicon Valley Chapter. Due to recession, Asha for Education is asking REWARD Trust to fend for itself. And hence this fund raising drive. Prior to the 6th pay commission the honorarium for teachers ranged from Rs 3000/to Rs 7500/- with an annual 5% increment and an individual annual incentive equivalent of about Rs 3000/ to 5000/-. Post VI pay commission and escalating price rise, REWARD Trust strongly feels that a decent, respectable & retainable pay for their teachers should be between Rs 6000/and Rs 15000/-

PLEDGE Given the freedom to handle affairs based on ground zero fluctuations in logistical details, REWARD Trust assures absolute ZERO OVERHEAD, NO LEAKAGE, NO SPILLAGE usage of funds received.
