STRUCTURAL QUIZ - 1

1 What does FPSO stand for? Floating Production Storage and Offloading

What does FSO stand for? Floating Storage and Offloading

What is the physical difference between an FPSO and an oil tanker? FPSOs are floating platforms used for production and temporary storage of oil before offloading it to oil tankers or other transportation vessels. These are moored at the wells and have flexible risers attached to subsea wells. Oil tankers are used only for transportation of oil from fixed or floating platforms to the shore.

Describe a Spar Neutrally buoyant structure (6 dof)

Describe a TLP Positively buoyant structure (5 dof). These are tethered to the sea bed and are heave restrained.

Describe a Compliant Tower This is a jacket supported fixed platform extending to the sea bed. They can go to a greater depth than the gravity and steel jacked type fixed platform. However they are more flexible than a steel jacket type fixed platform to flex with the forces of wind, waves and currents. Fatigue failure is critical for this type of platform.

Give some examples of oil facilities that would be used in 6000 foot (2000 metres) water depth TLP, Spar and FPSO

Name 2 methods of Loadout Loaded out on a barge (spar hulls) Floated to the location and then ballasted (gravity based fixed platforms)

What is the typical proportion of weight of Structural Steel to Total Weigh of an offshore module?

Structural steel Deck structure (main, cellar, mezzanine), helideck, living quarters, steel jacket or hull and piles. 20~30%

13

How is an offshore Jacket typically protected against corrosion Painting and Cathodic protection using sacrificial metals (anodes) made of zinc or aluminium around the jacket legs.

14

Name 2 areas where concrete is used on a typical Steel Jacket Grouting of piles, for permanent ballasting.

15

Other than a jacket, what other part of a fixed offshore structure would we check for fatigue loading? The risers (production pipes) for bringing oil to the topside.

16

Describe the typical end support details for a bridge that connects 2 platforms
