Discovery Vitality brings you the HealthyFood benefit to help you make healthier food choices when shopping at Pick n Pay.

Start saving on thousands of HealthyFood items


All Vitality members who activate the HealthyFood benefit immediately qualify for up to 10% savings on HealthyFood. You can increase your savings to up to 25% if you and your spouse (if applicable) complete a Personal Health Review (PHR) on www.discovery.co.za under Discovery Vitality. You and your spouse (if applicable) need to complete a PHR in January of every year to keep your up to 25% savings. You will also earn Vitality points based on how many HealthyFood items you have in your trolley compared to unhealthy items. The selection criteria for the list of HealthyFood in this catalogue were compiled by a team of top nutrition and health experts, and currently incorporate the nationally accepted South African Food-based Dietary Guidelines. These guidelines have also been adopted by the Department of Health and address HealthyFood high-risk dietary practices that are associated with chronic disease risk. They are consistent with international guidelines In partnership with published by the World Health Organization, the American Heart Association, the American Dietary Guidelines, and the UK-based Balance of Good Health Guidelines.

How HealthyFood works


To qualify for savings on HealthyFood you must choose and pay for products listed on the HealthyFood catalogue. HealthyFood savings and Vitality points only apply to products bought at Pick n Pay.

If you have a HealthyFood card, swipe before the cashier scans your items
To capture your HealthyFood savings you must remind the cashier to swipe your HealthyFood card before your items are scanned.

If your DiscoveryCard doubles up as your HealthyFood card then you must swipe your card twice: once before the cashier scans your items and again to pay. If you dont use your DiscoveryCard to pay we cant capture your HealthyFood savings.

How your HealthyFood savings are calculated


We pay your HealthyFood savings into your DiscoveryCard account each month. If you only have a HealthyFood card we pay it into your nominated bank account:

As a family, you get cash back on a maximum of R4 000 a month that you spend on HealthyFood. As a single member, you get cash back on a maximum of R2 000 a month that you spend on HealthyFood.

How to earn Vitality points


All HealthyFood products are identified as VIT on your till slip. You will earn up to 15 Vitality points for each HealthyFood item to a maximum of 750 points a month. Your points are awarded according to the ratio of HealthyFood items compared to less desirable food items in your trolley.

The less desirable food product range is made up of the following food and drink types: Sweets, chocolates and ice-cream Sugary foods Biscuits Crisps Sugary drinks High fat baked and fried items

What are less desirable foods (and drinks)


A less desirable food is a food (or drink) that is high in saturated fats, trans fatty acids, added sugar, salt or refined starch. These foods are characteristically not good sources of vitamins, minerals or fibre and usually have a high calorie-density.

What are other foods


Other foods include all food which doesnt fall into the HealthyFood or the less desirable food categories. This simply means that these foods will not affect how we calculate your points when evaluating your basket and makes no reference to the nutritional value of these food items.

Example of how to earn points


Kate has just bought 50 HealthyFood items at Pick n Pay, 20 less desirable items and 20 other items. She will earn 750 Vitality points (50 x 15) for this Pick n Pay visit, as she has purchased more than two HealthyFood items for every one less desirable item.
Having more than two HealthyFood items for every less desirable food item = 15 points per HealthyFood item = HealthyFoodTM items Having one or two HealthyFood items for every less desirable item = 10 points per HealthyFood item = Other items = Less desirable items

Vegetables

Steam, boil or bake


Vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients and help to promote good health and prevent disease. The South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines recommend that you Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits everyday. All whole fresh vegetables and herbs, as well as all plain, raw, chopped and sliced vegetables and herbs are included on the HealthyFood benefit. Fresh vegetables with spices, seasoning, flavouring, fat/ oil or sauces added are excluded from the HealthyFood benefit. Certain frozen vegetables also qualify as HealthyFood. This section lists the qualifying products.

Vegetables

Vegetable kebabs
Skewer sticks soak in water before cooking to prevent burning 6 pineapple slices, cut into cubes 1 cup cherry tomatoes 1 medium yellow pepper, sliced into squares 1 medium red pepper, sliced into squares 6 medium baby marrows, sliced thickly 24 medium button mushrooms Marinade: 6 tbs fresh lemon juice 6 tbs balsamic vinegar 2 sprigs rosemary 4 tsp olive oil Method Turn on the grill. Place vegetables onto skewer stick. Alternate tomatoes, pineapple, peppers, baby marrows and mushrooms. Place kebabs on greased grilling pan and brush with marinade. Place under grill on the middle shelf of the oven. Grill on high for approximately 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat, turn kebabs and brush with additional marinade. Return to heat and grill for an additional 5-10 minutes. Continue to grill and re-marinade the kebabs until the vegetables are cooked. Remove from grill and serve immediately. Tips to reduce preparation and cooking time Buy already washed and chopped fruit and vegetables. Use a sharp vegetable knife when preparing the vegetables. Prepare the vegetable kebabs before hand and refrigerate, cook just before serving. Preparation time: 25 35 minutes Cooking time: 20 35 minutes

cup / 125 ml fat-free plain yogurt 1 tbs / 15 ml reduced-fat mayonnaise 2 tsp / 10 ml smooth dijon mustard 1 small clove garlic, crushed milled pepper to taste 1-2 tbs / 15 - 30 ml chopped chives 1 tbs / 15 ml white balsamic vinegar Method Mix the dressing ingredients together. Adjust the seasoning to taste and store in a sealed glass jar in the fridge. Tips Drizzle over green salads, potato or pasta salads or coleslaws. 4 slices rye bread, toasted 12 llets sardines, canned in tomato sauce 1 medium avocado pear, sliced 2 tbs coriander, fresh, for garnish Pesto: 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tbs olive oil 2 tbs pine nuts 2 tbs basil, fresh 4 tsp lemon juice, fresh Method Place the pesto ingredients into a blender and blend until it forms a paste. Pasta and Noodles


All plain, uncooked pasta (including wholewheat and maize pasta) and noodles (including egg noodles and rice noodles) qualify as HealthyFood. Any pasta or noodles that have salt, spices, seasoning, flavouring or fat added are excluded from the HealthyFood benefit.

Heat the olive oil in a large pot. Add the garlic and onions to the pot and fry for 2 minutes. Add mince and brown for 5 minutes, stirring continuously to avoid the mince clumping together. Add the carrots and celery and cook for a further 3 - 4 minutes. Pour in the tomatoes, stock powder, tomato paste, sugar and water. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes. Rice
The South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines recommend that you make starchy foods the basis of most meals. Starchy foods should as far as possible be unrefined and/or high in fibre. Rice falls into the starchy food category. All plain, uncooked rice, including white, brown, wild, basmati, jasmine, long grain, short grain, sushi and maize rice, is included on the HealthyFood benefit. Any rice that has salt, spices, seasoning, flavouring or fat added is excluded from the HealthyFood benefit.

Not-so-naughty creamy rice pudding


1 cup / 200 g basmati rice 1.5 cup / 375 ml water 2.5 cup / 625 ml fat-free milk 0.25 cup / 60 ml sultanas 0.5 tsp / 3 ml nutmeg 1 tsp / 5 ml vanilla essence 4 tsp / 20 ml Sugalite Method

Rinse the rice, place in a saucepan and add water. Simmer over low heat until water is absorbed. Add 1 cup / 250 ml of the milk and simmer again until absorbed. Add the remaining 1.5 cups / 375 ml milk and cook again until milk is absorbed. Stir in the sultanas, nutmeg, vanilla and Sugalite to taste. Serve warm.
Tips to reduce preparation and cooking time

This dish can be made in advance and keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days. Simply reheat and serve.

Zesty lemon and garlic chicken fillets


4 medium / 480 g chicken breasts, skinless 2 cloves / 4 g garlic, crushed 1 tbs / 15 ml olive oil To taste black pepper, ground Marinade: 1 tsp / 5 ml lemon rind, nely grated 2 tbs / 30 ml lemon juice, fresh 4 tsp / 20 ml olive oil 2 tsp / 10 ml origanum, fresh, nely chopped 2 tbs / 5 g parsley, fresh, nely chopped Method

Cook for about 5 - 10 minutes on each side or until cooked through and browned. Add the chopped parsley and cook for 1 3 minutes longer, and serve.

Place the chicken fillets into a large glass bowl and add the lemon rind, lemon juice, olive oil, origanum and garlic. Cover the bowl with cling wrap and allow the chicken to marinate for 1 2 hours in the refrigerator. Remove the chicken breasts from the marinade and set aside. Heat the olive oil in a heavy based pan. Grind black pepper over each chicken breast and place into the pan.

Poached egg and rosa tomato breakfast treat


4 large / 200 g eggs 2 cups / 340 g rosa tomatoes 2 tsp / 10 ml rosemary, fresh, chopped 4 slices / 140 g wholewheat high bre bread 4 tsp / 20 ml canola margarine 2 tsp / 10 ml olive oil Cooking temperature: 180 Celsius / 350 Fahrenheit / 4 Gas Mark Method

When the tomatoes are nearly ready, poach the eggs and toast the bread. Spread the margarine on the toast and top with the egg and then the tomatoes. Serve and enjoy.
Tips to reduce preparation and cooking time

Preheat the oven. Toss the rosa tomatoes together with the rosemary and olive oil in a baking tray and place the tray on the middle level in the oven. Allow the tomatoes to cook for approximately 15 20 minutes until the tomato skins split.

Instead of making poached eggs, scramble the eggs to decrease cooking time. Slice the tomatoes and microwave them to decrease cooking time. Use dried rosemary instead of fresh rosemary.

To make sure the HealthyFood benefit is in line with current recommendations for environmental conservation, the decision was made to comply with the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI). So, weve only included fish species that are SASSI compliant on the HealthyFood benefit. Examples of fish which are included on the HealthyFood benefit because they are on the SASSI Green List are: Hake, Dorado, Sardines, Herring and Snoek.Examples of fish which are excluded from the HealthyFood benefit because they are on the Orange or Red Lists are: Kingklip, Geelbek (Cape Salmon); Monkfish, Red Roman, Sole, Bronze Bream and River Snapper (Red Snapper). Dorado with marjoram and lime


2 tsp / 10 ml marjoram leaves, dried 1 tsp / 5 ml cayenne pepper 4 med / 560 g dorado 4 tsp / 20 ml olive oil 2 tbs / 30 ml lime juice, fresh Method Combine marjoram and cayenne pepper and sprinkle over the fish. Heat the oil in the pan and add the fish once it is warmed. Cook over a medium heat for 2 - 5 minutes on each side or until the fish is tender and golden brown. Serve drizzled with lime juice. If you are unable to get dorado, swop it for another low fat fish such as hake. Use frozen fish and bake the fish in the oven for 30 minutes, while the fish is baking, vegetable accompaniments can be prepared. This will help to reduce preparation time.

Local and international dietary guidelines and research show that diets high in saturated fat are associated with higher blood cholesterol levels and an increased risk of developing heart disease. For this reason, all unflavoured fat-free or skim milk (including fresh, long-life, UHT and powdered fat-free milk), fat-free yoghurt (plain and flavoured) and plain, unflavoured fat-free cottage cheese are included on the HealthyFood benefit.

Soya milk and soya yoghurt


Soya milk and soya yoghurt are a good source of protein and are a useful substitute for people who do not include dairy in their diet. All plain unflavoured, unsweetened soya milk (including fresh, long-life and powdered soya milk) as well as both plain and flavoured soya yoghurt are included on the HealthyFood benefit.

Turn the tuna spread out of its mould and serve sliced with rye toast. Use already chopped, frozen onion. Serve in an attractive bowl garnished with a sprig of a fresh herb instead of chilling it in a mould to decrease preparation time.

All texturised or processed soya products, such as burgers and sausages, are excluded from the HealthyFood benefit. As these products have other ingredients, such as salt / or fat added to them and high intakes of salt are associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases.

Roasted rosemary and chickpea snack


2 tins/480 g chickpeas, canned, rinsed and drained 2 tbs/30 ml olive oil 1 tbs/15 ml rosemary, fresh, chopped 2 tsp/10 ml Italian mixed herbs, dried Black pepper, ground to taste Cooking temperature: 200 Celsius / 400 Fahrenheit / Gas Mark 6 Method

Preheat the oven. Mix all the ingredients together and place onto a baking tray and into the oven. Stir the chickpeas every 15 20 minutes and continue cooking until the chickpeas are dried and crunchy. Enjoy as a snack or even as a topping for salads.
Tips to reduce preparation and cooking time

Use dried rosemary instead of fresh rosemary. The chickpeas are also delicious partly dried out, so cook for a shorter amount of time if rushed. These may be stored in an airtight container, so make extra and store for a snack option when needed.

Vegetable oils, spreads, nuts and seeds are a rich source of unsaturated fat, which are highly beneficial in promoting health and preventing disease.

Almond blueberry granola


Olive oil spray, for rolling cup/80 g oats, raw cup/75 g mixed nuts, unsalted, toasted and roughly chopped 1 cups/375 ml milk, fat-free 1 cups/280 g mixed summer berries 1 cup/250 ml yoghurt, Greek, fat-free to serve Cooking temperature: 1800 Celsius / 3500 Fahrenheit / 4 Gas Mark Method Spray a baking sheet lightly with spray oil. Mix the oats and nuts in a bowl then spread the mixture out on the prepared baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven, 180 C for 5-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir well. Return to the oven and bake for another 3 4 minutes until lightly toasted. Leave the oats and nut mixture to cool. Divide the granola between 4 serving bowls and pour over the milk. Add the berries and serve with Greek yoghurt. Tips to reduce preparation and cooking time

Extra oats and nuts can be toasted, cooled then kept covered in an airtight container for further use. Frozen berries, thawed out can be used instead of fresh berries. The mixture can be made the night before and eaten the following day for breakfast.

Oils
Local and international dietary guidelines advise that monounsaturated fats are the preferred choice of fats, especially for those who may be at risk of coronary heart disease. Certain oils that are rich in monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil, are also a good source of phytonutrients and anti-oxidants.

For these reasons, oils that are significant sources of monounsaturated fatty acids, namely plain olive oil, canola oil and avocado oil, are included on the HealthyFood benefit.

Nuts
The South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines advise that monounsaturated fatty acids are the preferred choice of fats. Nuts are an excellent source of monounsaturated fatty acids, fibre and phytonutrients. All plain, raw, unsalted nuts, including almonds, hazel nuts, cashews, macadamia, peanuts, walnuts, pecan nuts, pine kernels, pistachios, chestnuts and Brazil nuts are included on the HealthyFood benefit. Nuts that are salted or seasoned or roasted in oil are not included on the HealthyFood benefit.

All seeds, including linseeds, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds are included on the HealthyFood benefit provided that they are not salted, flavoured, seasoned or roasted in oil.
