But what about...

Embodied energy? Product lifecycle? Materiality? Construction sequence? What about all the aspects of the element that deal with time and not just space?

ShadeStructure
draws on experience gained from the RainRoof to produce a more lightweight, inexpensive canopy structure that includes parameters related to constructability. While the RainRoof addressed some metrics of real application (structural and water weight), it focused on adaptability of the element to a wide range of contexts without considering how the element would actually be used in those contexts. This element rethinks the original design intents from scratch.

Component Development

Fins + Louvers The fin height is standardized, while the louvers can vary in length and angle. The sizes and lengths of the louvers can be changed, as can certain aspects of the fins. The entire assembly is easy to manufacture, assemble, and dis-assemble; creates shade; and contributes to an interesting outdoor environment. Assemblies of fins plus louvers are then arrayed to achieve a complete shading system.
