or nearly 50 years, the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO) has helped its members seize opportunities presented by continuously evolving constituent needs and technological advances. Bridging the intersection of library sciences, knowledge management, and technology innovation, METRO upholds traditional information access ideals in an increasingly unmediated digital age.

LEADERSHIP
METROs staff of seasoned professionals with extensive experience in library operations, research, technology, and related areas is helmed by a newly appointed Executive Director, Jason Kucsma a librarian who brings vision, energy, and an entrepreneurial spirit to METRO that is critical to the organizations evolution during this critical period of change in the industry. Collaborating with METROs staff, Board of Trustees, members, and experienced advisors, Kucsma works to develop and execute METRO's continually evolving range of member programs and services.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING
Our professional development programs focus on the skills and issues our members need to continue to be industry leaders. Topics include emerging technologies, management, staff development, digital strategies, and more. Courses are held at METROs training center in Manhattan and often available online.

DELIVERY SERVICE

METROs delivery service enables members to share materials and resources quickly and efficiently, and the referral card system helps libraries share resources and increase access to research materials for their users.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

METRO hosts a range of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) where members from libraries, archives, and museums meet to address unique challenges and opportunities in their respective communities. SIGs are open to any professionals in metropolitan New York. Current SIGs include: Digitization, Library 2.0, Bibliographic Instruction, Smart Phones & Mobile Computing, and many others.

METROs state-of-the-art services and resources help our members stay current in an ever-changing technological landscape. METRO hosts symposia, lectures, webinars, and workshops on a wide range of both traditional and emerging topics in information management; sponsors vendor showcases; provides startup grants for digitization projects; and encourages our members to share innovations and expertise.

INDUSTRY ADVOCACY & GRANTS

METRO is New Yorks leading provider of training and support for library and information professionals at every stage of their careers. METROs individual membership program, myMETRO, connects individual librarians, archivists, information professionals, students, and retirees to an array of unique networking opportunities, dynamic learning resources, and other valuable benefits.

METRO advocates on behalf of members with government leaders at the state and federal level to support government funding of libraries, library systems, archives, and museums. METROs staff reaches out to corporate funders and civic leaders to support METRO members and the communities they serve. METRO also administers grants to support critical library programs and services.

Completely overhauled in 2011 and proactively maintained and augmented, Metro.org is a one-of-a-kind resource for thought leadership, community, and career management for library and related information science professionals. The METRO website offers membership self-service, event registration, and a robust job bank.

DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE PROGRAM

For nearly 50 years, METRO has been a vital networking resource bringing together members of the library community in New York City and Westchester County. Through special events, annual meetings, training programs, Special Interest Groups and other services, METRO helps professionals at every level connect with helpful industry contacts and explore future directions for their organizations and their careers.

METROs Documentary Heritage Program helps to protect and expand access to important archival holdings that reflect the New York metropolitan areas rich culture and history. Working with trusted consultants in the region, METRO provides critical training and collection assessments for archivists and the collections they steward.

HOSPITAL LIBRARY SERVICES

Currently, over 50 hospital and medical center libraries participate in METROs Hospital Library Services Program. METRO awards collection development and technology grants annually to hospital and medical center libraries and subsidizes medical-related interlibrary loans.
