Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Gophysique de Gophysique de lEnvironnement l Environnement

The CNRS Laboratoire de Glaciologie et Gophysique de lEnvironnement (LGGE) and The Universit Joseph Fourier (UJF) in Grenoble, France are searching for a PhD candidate to be sponsored by the fellowship by UJF for the period of st 36 month starting from 1 October 2012. The topic of PhD thesis is focused on the Mechanisms of the moisture advection in high latitudes in the present and future climate. Very generally, we will be interested in understanding the role of mean meridional circulation and highlatitudinal synoptic transients in forming moisture budget in the Arctic and Antarctic using best available reanalysis products and climate models. Methodologies for the diagnostics are to be developed and shall include (but may not necessarily be limited to) the computations of the source terms using high resolution data, analysis of precipitation and snow/ice accumulation, dynamics of synoptic transients. LGGE is one of the Worlds leading multidisciplinary laboratories in highlatitudinal climate research and glaciology. UJF is recognized as one of the highly ranked French Universities with excellently managed campus in the city of Grenoble annually ranked within top most attractive cities for student studies in France. We expect that a successful candidate will have Master of Science degree (those expecting to get the degree in summer 2012 will be equally considered) in meteorology, atmospheric physics or related areas (e.g. oceanography, geosciences, including geo-engineering). At least preliminary knowledge of meteorology and climate dynamics or/and capability to quickly learn is highly appreciate. Basic knowledge of geophysical fluid mechanics, general familiarity with associated numerical procedures and the major data storage formats, programming skills in FORTRAN are highly desirable. Some experience with numerical modeling would be an advantage but not unconditionally required. Working knowledge of English is required. For applicants from abroad some basic knowledge of French will be considered as an advantage, but not unconditionally required. The amount of fellowship is 1685 monthly (yr 2012) before some taxes and insurances. Candidates should send their CV, statement of motivation and recommendation from the adviser of Master thesis to Dr. Olga Zolina 54, rue Molire, Domaine Universitaire, BP96, 38402 Saint-Martin dHres cedex, France phone: +33 (0)4 76 82 42 44, fax: +33 (0)4 76 82 42 01 Email: ozolina@lgge.obs.ujf-grenoble.fr before 31 May 2012.
