MANDATORY GUIDELINES FOR CONSULTANTS OF MHTN ARCHITECTS

The following set of guidelines has been established to streamline the use of computer technology by MHTN Architects employees and MHTN Architects consultants. The National CAD Standard (NCS) serves as the basis for MHTNs entire computer aided design (CAD) guidelines. Suggestions and feedback are always appreciated. Please send comments to amym@mhtn.com.

SHEET FILE NAMING

Demolition Discipline Sheet Type Sequence/Level Modifier

CAD GUIDELINES SHEET FILE NAMING Always use two characters to identify the discipline. See page 3 for a complete list. The slab edge plan uses an S modifier to distinguish it from other plans. Sheet type is always identified with one number.

Discipline Designator

Example:

A A A A A A A

E S E F C E E

Architectural Element Architectural Site Architectural Elements Architectural Finish Architectural Ceiling

Sheet sequence for plan sheets always defines the floor level. Areas of floor plans are identified using A - Z as a modifier. Mixed sheets should always be given a plan designation. Demolition sheets are named accordingly with a D in front. Basement - AE1B1 Mezzanine - AE1M1

Supplemental sheets should always be saved as Acrobat PDF files and stored in the appropriate folder. 8.5"x11" is the preferred size. Increase size only when absolutely necessary. If supplement results in revision of original drawing; 1. Change the drawing, 2. Delete any previous clouds, but leave the delta. 3. Add new cloud 4. Leave previous revision note in title block 5. Add new revision note If a new drawing is created: -When added to the existing sheet use the word 'New' in the title (New Detail).

LAYER NAMING
Discipline Code Major Group Minor Group Minor Group 2 Status

CAD GUIDELINES LAYER NAMING MHTN's pre defined layers can be accessed from the MHTN_Standards - 2.dwg. Layer '0' should only be used for Xref's Layer 'Defpoints' should not be used.

Discipline Code

Graphics should always use 'ByLayer' for color. Linetype can be overridden. L O R W A L L P R H T E Layer management should be done using the Express Tools layer manager.

Required Field. The discipline code is a single character field, followed by a dash. The defined characters are the same for layers and model file names. See page 12 for a complete list.
Major Group

Required Field. Four characters followed by a dash. The major group designation identifies the building system. Major groups are pre defined by AIA, for a complete list see page 12.
Minor Group

W A

Optional Field. Four characters followed by a dash. The minor group designation is used to further differentiate the major groups. Though this field can be user defined AIA offers a list of suggested minor groups. See page 12 for listings.

Minor Group 2

Optional Field. Four characters followed by a dash. The minor group 2 designation is used to further differentiate the minor groups. This is a user defined field.
Status

Optional Field. The status field is a single character designation that differentiates new construction from remodeling and existing to remain. It is only needed when phases of work must be differentiated. See page 12 for a complete list.

DRAFTING GUIDELINES DRAWING SET

DRAWING SET ORDER

The organization of the drawing set must be flexible and adaptive to the influences of project size and complexity, including delivery methods. This process organizes drawing sets in the following manner: Segregate the information by disciplines Collect and present each drawing on a sheet dedicated to that drawing type. Present information within each subset from general to specific.
All of the subset may not apply, or more specific additional categories may be required depending on the size, scope and complexity of the project.

DRAFTING GUIDELINES SHEET LAYOUT

SHEET SIZE
Sheet size is generally determined by the size of the project floor plan or by possible plan segments. If it cannot fit on one sheet, the floor plan should be divided into convenient segments with match lines. Standard sheet sizes: 24 x 36 30 x 42 (D Size) (E Size)
If the plan is divided into segments, these segments should remain consistent between all disciplines.

If requested by the owner, the following sheet size may be used: 36 x 48 (F Size) For Supplemental or Addendum Drawings use: 8 x 11 (A Size)
1 2 3 4 5

Use standard MHTN drawing templates which will establish the margins, the Drawing Block Area and Title Block Area and the drawing module layout.

DRAFTING GUIDELINES SHEET LAYOUT

SHEET LAYOUT
The sheet layout divides the sheet into two areas: Title Block Area Drawing Area The Drawing Area Is divided into drawing blocks. Block size: 5 3/4 h x 6 7/8 w These blocks are arranged in columns and rows. Columns are identified: Left to Right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Rows are identified: Bottom to Top: A, B, C, D
1 2 3 4 5

Use standard MHTN drawing templates which establishes the margins and title block information areas and where applicable, the drawing module area.

MHTN info D

The Title Block Area Contains PROJECT INFORMATION The same for each sheet: MHTM logo Engineers logo Project Title

Not all sheets will have a note block

DRAFTING GUIDELINES DRAFTING CONVENTIONS

SCALE
The scale chosen for a drawing or view should be the smallest scale possible that will still allow the drawing to display the required information clearly, without congestion or ambiguity. All drawings or views should indicate the numeric scale at which the view is presented. Do not use the word: SCALE For isometrics, diagrams, etc. Not to Scale or NTS
All drawings should indicate the numeric scale. At the Owners request, or if the drawing is to be reduced, all Plan Drawings should contain a graphic scale. It is preferred to keep the same scale for all drawings on a single sheet. Bold type indicates preferred scale.

Large Scale Views General Details Door and Window Frame Details

Avoid: 3/8 = 1-0 Try to draw all details on any one sheet at the same scale.

DIMENSIONS
Dimensions must be adequate and accurate. Show a single dimension only once in it proper location. Avoid the tendency to over dimension. Generally, dimensions should be located outside the plan or view. Dimensions should proceed from general to specific, from outside in toward the plan. When dimensions are shown on the interior of a plan or view, the dimensions should be arranged in continuous strings. Arrange interior dimensions as to not conflict with other plan information. Tie dimensions to a fixed point, such as a grid, wall line, etc. Plan Dimensions: Dimension to the face of finish of wall. Vertical Dimensions: Tie to finish floor elevations.
The terminator between a dimension line and the extension lines is the form of a short, slanted line. Slashes on a dimension line should always be parallel to each other. On all drawings, dimension fractions should not be less than 1/8

DRAFTING GUIDELINES DRAFTING CONVENTIONS

COORDINATE SYSTEM
Horizontal: To locate the building horizontally, fixed points in the building outline are dimensioned to the property lines. Vertical: Set Architectural LEVEL 1 elevation datum to Civil (survey) datum bench mark. (As referenced on site plan) Example: EL 4844.05 (Civil) = EL 100-0 (Architectural)
