Specialty Training Requirements in Anatomical Pathology

VERSION 1.0 These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1st, 2010.

MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS


Sixty (60) months of approved residency training. This period must include: Basic Clinical Training 1. Twelve (12) months of basic clinical training The purpose of the training required under Section 1 is to give the resident a degree of independent responsibility for clinical decisions; an opportunity for further development of the skills required in making effective relationships with patients; the consolidation of competence in primary clinical and technical skills across a broad range of medical practice; and an understanding of the nature of the relationships between a referring physician and the consulting pathologist. This period must include: 1.1. Two (2) months in a surgical specialty relevant to pathology 1.2. Two (2) months in an adult medical specialty relevant to pathology 1.3. One (1) month in pediatrics or a pediatric subspecialty 1.4. One (1) month in obstetrics and gynecology relevant to pathology 1.5. One (1) month in a oncologic specialty relevant to pathology 1.6. Five (5) months of further basic clinical training as approved by the program director Core Anatomical Pathology 2. 36 months of approved residency training in Anatomical Pathology. These 36 months must include a minimum of: 2.1. Twenty-four (24) months or equivalent longitudinal experience in surgical pathology and adult autopsy pathology 2.2. Two (2) months or equivalent longitudinal experience in forensic pathology 2.3. Three (3) months or equivalent longitudinal experience in cytopathology 2.4. Two (2) months or equivalent longitudinal experience in pediatric pathology

2.5. Two (2) months or equivalent longitudinal experience in neuropathology

Selectives 3. Twelve (12) months of approved training in one or more of the following: 3.1. Clinical or basic research work in a biomedical topic 3.2. Anatomical Pathology training acceptable to the Program director 3.3. Training in a branch or other branches of laboratory medicine 3.4. Internal Medicine or a medical subspecialty 3.5. General Surgery or a surgical subspecialty 3.6. Obstetrics and Gynecology 3.7. Pediatrics or a pediatric subspecialty 3.8. Other specialty training in Anatomical Pathology, as acceptable to the Program Director

NOTES:
For satisfactory completion of the Royal College requirements in Anatomical Pathology, a resident must: 1. Have successfully completed a five year program in Anatomical Pathology under the auspices of a Royal College accredited program in which the resident has been enrolled for the full five years. 2. Carry out research or other scholarly work, including posing a learning/research question, and formulating a plan to answer the question, in accordance with individual program guidelines.
