Assignment: You will select a character from To Kill a Mockingbird and will BECOME this person for the

tea party. You are expected to socialize with your neighbors as your Maycomb County self. You are to discuss the recent events in your town and will provide a toast to your neighbors celebrating Maybcombs heroes and expressing how you feel about being a part of this party. STEP ONE: Think from the perspective of the character that you chose. Who would his/her hero be? Why? STEP TWO: Brainstorm. Remember: you will celebrate Maycombs heroes with your toast expressing why one or two people are heroes to you. Be sure to include evidence from the book that backs up why your character would view these people as heroes! You must conclude your speech with a statement about how you personally feel being included in this Maycomb event. STEP THREE: Organize your information in an outline format. I will be collecting this from you on the day of the Tea Party. 1. INTRODUCTION - (Attention Getting Step) Introduce yourself to the people of Maycomb. Lead your audience to meeting the person (the people) that you have chosen to speak about. 2. BODY - Explain WHY one or two people in Maycomb are heroes to your character. INCLUDE EVIDENCE from the book that supports why your character would view this person (these people) as heroes. 3. CONCLUSION - You must conclude your speech with a statement about how you personally feel being included in this Maycomb event. STEP FOUR: Organize your information on to THREE notecards MAXIMUM. You may NOT write out your entire speech on the notecards! You DO NOT need to use notecards at all, if you wish! Feel free to memorize your thoughts.

STEP FIVE: Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse, and then rehearse some more. Ill be blunt. If you dont prepare, there are many consequences, but, here are three that are guaranteed: 1) You will not feel in control of the material. This will increase your nervousness and you wont do as well as you are capable of and your confidence will be affected. 2) Your audience will be cheated from the great listening experience hey may have had if you had given your all. They will feel you are wasting their time. 3) Your instructor knows the difference between nerve problems and lack of preparation. I will be sympathetic to nerves because I will see the preparation, but I will not be sympathetic to a lack of preparation and your grade will be affected. Winging it is not a good option! Good luck and have fun with this!

Use this space to take notes. What questions do you have? Who do you think you will toast to? What is the reasoning behind your choice?

Dont forget! You will be graded for this! Speech (written work aka outline) 10 points Speech (presentation) 10 points
