MCCF ANNOUNCES 2012 SPRING
GRANTS
From Staff Reports
MECOSTA COUNTY Each year the
Mecosta County Community Foundation
grants money to support the needs of
community organizations and nonprofits.
Award winners include arts, education,
nature conservation and the environment,
community development, health, social
services and the preservation or historical and
cultural resources.
The foundation recently announced its 2012
spring grant recipients, with a total of nearly
$15,000 awarded. To be eligible for a grant,
applicants must be organized for charitable
purposes and either qualified as tax-exempt
under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue
Code or as a tax-supported organization.
The following organizations will receive funds
from the foundations Youth Advisory Council
(MCYAC) and/or its Community Needs Fund
(CNF):
Angels of Action will receive $2,000 from
MCYAC and $1,000 from CNF for its
Backpack Blessings program.
Friends of the Big Rapids Dog Park will
receive $250 from MCYAC and $1,000
from CNF for the formation of a dog park
in Big Rapids.
Cran-Hill Ranch will receive $800 from
MCYAC and $800 from CNF to help pay
for the cost to send children to camp.
Eagle Village will receive $800 from
MCYAC and $800 from CNF to help pay
for intervention services.
Hope Network Foundation will receive
$700 from CNF for its Getting Ahead in a
Just Getting by World program.
Mecosta County Conservation District
will receive $500 from CNF for its 2012
household hazardous waste collection
program.
Mecosta County Historical Society will
receive $750 from CNF to purchase new
lights.
Mid-Michigan Community Action
Agency will receive $2,000 from CNF
for its Mecosta County Walk for Warmth
program.
Morley Stanwood Community Schools will
receive $300 from CNF for a campus art
restoration project.
Project Starburst will receive $1,000 from
MCYAC and $1,250 from CNF to help
stock its pantry shelves.
The MCYAC also is issuing two mini grants
of $400 each to Big Rapids Middle School
and Morley Stanwood Middle School for the
purchase of student calculators and eighth
grade wireless Internet access, respectively.
The community foundation will present
the grant awards to officials from the local
organizations at 9 a.m. on May 23 at the
downtown Chemical Bank branch.
We want to help great community projects,
said Robyn Stratton, foundation administrative
executive. In a given year, we have about
$20,000 (in the CNF and about $10,000 in
the MCYAC fund) to give away. We have two
grant rounds, fall and spring, to give what
we have to fulfill the needs of as many grant
requests as we can.

SMALL-TOWN PARK NAMED
AMERICAS FAVORITE -- COULD
YOURS BE NEXT?
(NewsUSA) - Last summer, the small town
of Minot, N.D., was severely damaged by
a record-breaking flood. As Minots 40,000
residents struggled to put their lives back
together, many found solace in trying to
rebuild their beloved Oak Park.
Oak Park anchored the community and
provided a place for friends, families and
neighbors to be active and enjoy the outdoors
together. Every summer, the park was the
setting for concerts, a farmers market and
more. The sense of loss was profound among
residents, mourning memories in the park
washed away by the flood.
So, last summer when Coca-Cola launched
the America Is Your Park campaign, park
lovers in Minot seized the opportunity to
rally behind Oak Park. Park supporters
from around the country cast more than 13
million votes for their favorite parks during the
campaign. No one could have imagined that
this small park would beat out thousands of
others to become Americas Favorite Park
and take home a $100,000 recreation grant.
But thats exactly what happened!
Do you want to know the secret to their
success? The entire community got involved!
Park lovers held events in the park, mobilized
online, engaged hometown celebrities and
voted non-stop. Their efforts not only captured
the attention of local news media and
dignitaries, but an A-list Hollywood celebrity
from Minot got involved.
Is your park Americas next favorite? Is it in
need of repairs, big or small? Follow Oak
Parks lead, and your favorite park could
win. The park with the most votes will get a
$100,000 recreation grant from the Coca-Cola
Live Positively initiative to help restore, rebuild
or enhance activity areas in the park.
But first, you have to vote! Use your
home computer or smartphone to vote at
LivePositively.com/parks starting May 23. And
while youre on the site, learn more about how
you can earn 100 votes each time you check
in from the park.
Then become a champion for your park.
Organize voting drives, pass out flyers, host a
field day in the park, reach out to hometown
celebrities and more. Whether you vote a few
times or 100, you have the power to change
your park and community.
Whats even better is that more than one
park will win! Second- and third-place parks
will receive $50,000 and $25,000 grants,
respectively. And one lucky park will be
chosen, at random, from parks that placed
fourth through 25th on the leader board to win
a $15,000 grant. Now that should give you
even more reason to get behind your park.
The fate of your favorite park is just a mouse
click away, so get involved. Just imagine the
impact these improvements can have on your
park and community. The contest ends July
15, so vote today and vote often!
ALWAYS THE BRIDESMAID? YOU
CAN WEAR THE DRESSES AGAIN
(NewsUSA) - And youll be able to wear
it again! is a phrase often used around
bridesmaids dresses. Because a ridiculously
expensive lime-green taffeta shepherdess
gown is appropriate for almost any occasion,
and the Peter Pan collar is poised to make a
comeback any century now.
If youre one of the many women who has
piles of Pepto-Bismol-colored ruffles stuffed
in the back of her closet, never fear -; you
will be able to wear that dress again. Host an
old bridesmaids dress party, and the good
times may even blot out the embarrassment
of having had to wear that dress in the first
place.
Where to start? The concept is simple
-- invite all of your girlfriends over, and tell
them to wear their most hideous bridesmaid
dress. Not only will you get to rewear the
bridesmaids dresses of weddings past, youll
also get to laugh at some of the more hideous
outfits. Note: if you were a bridesmaid at a
friends wedding, either dont invite her or try
not to wear the dress she chose, even if it
does include a tutu and puffed sleeves.
Adding an inexpensive spin to classic
elegance is the way to go. Skip the chips
and dip in favor of a fruit-and-cheese platter.
For a refreshing twist on champagne, the
traditional wedding libation, pick up a few
bottles of a fruit-flavored sparkling wine. Arbor
Mist (arbormist.com), which is known for fruit
and wine combinations like Strawberry White
Zinfandel and Blackberry Merlot, has recently
released a line of sparkling wines. Both the
Peach Sparkle and the Raspberry Sparkle
combine light and crisp sparkling wine with
natural fruit, creating the perfect refreshment
for a get-together with your girlfriends.
For entertainment, ask each woman to tell
the story behind her bridesmaid dress. You
can also have fun playing a wedding-themed
round of Pictionary or charades. You can also
hold a vote to find out, for once and for all,
which one of you had to endure the wearing
the worst bridesmaid dress.

A COLLEGE GUIDE FOR
CHILDHOOD CANCER SURVIVORS
(NewsUSA) - At 14 years of age, Chase
Meacham of Columbus, Ohio, became a
survivor.
He survived a cancer diagnosis of
osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor
that attacks youth during their budding
adolescence. He survived 35 rounds of
chemotherapy, five surgeries and a relapse.
As Meacham says, he was tremendously
lucky.
I emerged from the darkness and the
blackness and, to my great surprise, found
a world that was a thousand times sweeter
than the one I had left, said the 20-year-old
Meacham, who now has a titanium prosthetic
supporting his left knee. For the first time
in my life, I was able to treasure each day. I
could see things now; I could see just how
wonderful it was to be able to walk, unbound
by [wheel] chair or walker or crutches or
cane.
Like many childhood cancer survivors,
Meacham realizes survivorship is a journey
that lasts a lifetime. Through advocacy work
he continues to impart his intimate knowledge
to others facing a lifetime battle with cancer,
and he was one of 32 recipients to win a
Beyond the Cure scholarship from The
National Childrens Cancer Society (NCCS).
Among the many difficult steps that Meacham
took after his treatment, going to college
presented new challenges and rewards. To
help parents and soon-to-be students with the
transition, NCCS (www.thenccs.org) compiled
advice from other survivors:
* Be realistic about the college completion
timeframe. It takes the average student five
years to finish college these days -- even

if they face none of the issues of a cancer
survivor. Consider course requirements,
course sizes and curricula and, if necessary,
take five to six years to graduate.
* Choose instructors with teaching styles
that complement your learning style. Whether
you thrive off class discussion, group work
or individual face time with professors,
ask academic advisors about compatible
teachers.
* Consider health insurance coverage.
Even if its been years since any tumor growth
or relapse, you will always need health
insurance. Some universities offer coverage
plans, which can be a viable option.
* Get acquainted with other students with
disabilities. Being able to relate to someone
going through similar struggles can help
survivors navigate problems and know what
to expect.

HIGH ON HORROR -- WHY WE PAY BIG
BUCKS TO BE SCARED
(NewsUSA) - We crave chills.
Its why we get a rush when we see Jason
take his axe to some unsuspecting teen in
Friday the 13th or why we cant seem to
look away when Carrie, dripping with pigs
blood, incinerates her entire high-school
class.
While mesmerizing, to be sure, the real
question is: why do we pay for the pleasure of
being scared?
On this, there are various schools of thought.
Some believe that fans of horror (be it movies
or books) dont actually experience fear, but
are excited instead, while others believe
that people are willing to endure the terror
because they know there is no real threat,
that they are essentially safe. Still others feel
that moviegoers are willing to be scared in
order to feel a sense of euphoric relief at the
end.
Whatever the reason, movie studios like
Seven Arts Pictures, a Los Angeles-based
indie movie production company, are counting
on customers who are willing to pay to be
petrified, by releasing a horror flick like Night
of the Demons. In the movie, three friends
attend a party held in a mansion where, years
prior, six people disappeared and the owner
hung herself.
We think that people have a morbid
fascination with the dark side, said Peter
Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts. So even
though a horror movie might be illogical on
an intellectual level, people still like to be
uncomfortable on an emotional level. Its
about people facing their fears, he added.
Which makes sense and explains why many
of us have (reluctantly) stuck our hand down
the garbage disposal, just waiting for our
fingers to brush up against something (or,
perhaps, for the machine to turn on by itself,
shredding the hand inside ? la Stephen King),
or why we might refuse to put our leg out of
the covers at night.
This, too, is why we keep creepy haunted
houses busy at Halloween, why we tell ghost
stories around the campfire and why we turn
out for horror movies like they were giving
away free popcorn.
Its because we like it.

VACCINATING ON TIME IS CRITICAL FOR
DISEASE PREVENTION
(NewsUSA) - Parents agree that feeding and
sleep schedules are important to help keep
their children healthy. The same goes for
childhood immunizations. Vaccinating children
on time is the best way to protect them
against 14 serious and potentially deadly
diseases before their second birthday.
The recommended immunization schedule
is designed to offer protection early in life,
said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant Surgeon
General and Director of the Centers for
Disease Control and Preventions (CDC)
National Center for Immunization and
Respiratory Diseases, when babies are
vulnerable and before its likely they will be
exposed to diseases.
Public health and medical experts base their
vaccine recommendations on many factors.
They study information about diseases and
vaccines very carefully to decide which
vaccines kids should get and when they
should get them for best protection.
Although the number of vaccines a child
needs in the first two years may seem like
a lot, a healthy babys immune system can
handle getting all vaccines when they are
recommended.
Dr. Schuchat cautions against delaying
vaccination, There is no known benefit to
delaying vaccination. In fact, it puts babies
at risk of getting sick because they are left
vulnerable to catch serious diseases during
the time they are not protected by vaccines.
When parents choose not to vaccinate or
to follow a delayed schedule, children are
left unprotected against diseases that still
circulate in this country, like measles and
whooping cough. In 2010, more than 27,000
cases of whooping cough were reported
nationally with 27 deaths -; 25 of which were
infants.
In 2011, 222 people were reported to have
measles in the U.S. - thats more than any
year since 1996. Staying on track with the
immunization schedule ensures that children
have the best protection against diseases like
these by age two.
Parents who are concerned about the number
of shots given at one time can reduce the
number given at a visit by using the flexibility
built into the recommended immunization
schedule. For example, the third dose of
hepatitis B vaccine can be given at 6 through
18 months of age. Parents can work with their
childs health care professional to have their
child get this dose at any time during that age
range.
If you have questions about the childhood
immunization schedule, talk with your childs
doctor or nurse. For more information about
vaccines, go to www.cdc.gov/vaccines/
parents.
