Tech II Semester Examinations,JULY 2011 GROUND WATER DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT Civil Engineering Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ********** 1. Enumerate step by step studies to be made for optimum development of water resources of any basin along with a case study. [16] 2. (a) Compare the several drawdown and step draw down teat to estimate well los s constant. What is the importance of this parameter? (b) What is meant by well interference? Find the expression for the interference factor for three wells located at the corners of an isosceles triangle, for stea dy state conditions in a con

ned aquifer. [8+8] 3. (a) How various rocks eects ground water. (b) Explain various types of aquifers along with neat sketches. [8+8] 4. A tubewell pumping at a rate of 250 m3/h taps an aquifer hydraulically connec ted to a stream located at a distance of 160m from the tubewell. The storativity and transmissivity of the aquifer are 0.15 and 1800 m3/day. Determine the percentage of pumpage induced from the stream after a period of two months. [16] 5. The product of a steady discharge Q to the sea and length L of the salt/fresh water interface in a con

ned aquifer is 112.5 m3/d per meter length of seacoast. The thickness of the con

ned aquifer is 60 m. If two observations wells, very close to each other, just before the toe region measure a hydraulic gradient of 1.67 * 10 -3, compute the height of the interface above datum 200 m away from the seacoast. Pf = 1000kg=m3; Ps = 1025kg=m3: Draw a neat sketch. [16] 6. List out various tracers used for the determination of hydraulic conductivity and explain any one method in detail along with a neat sketch and its assumptions.[1 6] 7. Two tube wells of 20 cm diameter are spaced at 120 m distance and penetrate f ully a confined aquifer of 12 m thickness. Calculate the discharge when only one well is discharging under a depression head of 3m. What will be the percentage decrease in the discharge of this well, if both the well is discharging under the depress ion head of 3m.Assume the radius of the circle of in uence for each well as 200m and permeability of the aquifer 40 m/day. [16] 8. In figure 1 shows the location of 4 geophones placed on an undulating topogra phy for a seismic refraction investigation. The actual first arrival times recorded at A, B, C and D are 15 ms, 29 ms, 40 ms and 50 ms respectively, whereas the corrected times for these geophones to project on a datum plane at 400 amsl are 7.74 ms,
