New Requirements for Undergraduate Psychology Majors at FSU (Effective September 1, 2009)

Admission Requirements for the Psychology Major 1. An overall GPA of 2.8 (based on all attempted college coursework) 2. Meet requirements for progression to upper division status 3. Completion of the three courses listed below (each with a C- or better). These 3 courses should be taken as part of the Liberal Studies requirements or the A.A. degree. a. PSY 2012 General Psychology 3 hours b. One biology course. Choose from following: BSC 1005 BSC 2010 BSC 2085 PCB 2099 General Biology (for non-bio majors) 3 hours Biological Science I (for biology majors) 3 hours Anatomy and Physiology I 3 hours or BSC2086 Anatomy and Physiology II 3 hours Human Physiology 3 hours

PSB 2000 Brain & Behavior (If students use Brain and Behavior for this Biology admissions requirement, they cannot also count it toward Group 2 of the psychology requirements.) 3 hours ZOOX010 Introduction to Zoology 3 hours

c. STA 2122 Introduction to Applied Statistics 3 hours. (Students for whom this course is not available can be admitted to the Psychology major with successful completion of another statistics course. However, these students must complete STA2122 their first semester at FSU concurrent with PSY3213C Research Methods.) Psychology Curriculum: 36 hours of Psychology (not including General Psychology, PSY 2012) Courses used to fulfill these requirements must be completed with a minimum grade of C-. ALL of Group 1 (Research Methods): Group 1 technically is one course. 4 hours credit for Group 1 PSY 3213C Research Methods in Psychology with Lab 4 hours [pre-req/co-req: STA 2122, can be a co-req for students who have prior statistics credit]

ONE from Group 2 (Neuroscience): Students must take one course from this group. 3-4 hours credit for Group 2, depending on students choice of course. PSB 2000 PSB 4461 EXP 3203C PSB 3004C EXP 3202C Brain and Behavior 3 hours (If PSB 2000 was used for the Biology requirement for entrance into the major, it cannot also fulfill Group 2.) Hormones and Behavior 3 hours Animal Sensory Processes with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Physiological Psychology with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Sensation and Perception with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C]

TWO from Group 3 (Social, Cognitive, Developmental): Students must take two courses from this group, but only one of these can have a DEP prefix.: 6 - 7 hours credit for Group 3, depending on students choice of courses. SOP 3004 EXP 2020 EXP 4640 EXP 3404 EXP 3604C DEP 3103 DEP 4404 DEP2004/2000 Social Psychology 3 hours Mind and Cognition 3 hours Psychology of Language 3 hours Human Memory and Learning 3 hours [Can be used for the 4000 level course requirement] Cognitive Psychology with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Child Psychology 3 hours Psychology of Adult Development and Aging 3 hours Human Growth and Development 3 hours

TWO from Group 4 (Lecture/Laboratory Combinations): Students must take two lecture/lab combinations from the list below. If students used one or more lecture/lab courses from the list below to fulfill requirements from Group 2 and/or Group 3, they can still use them toward the Group 4 requirements. As one example, the Physiological Psychology lecture/lab can count both toward Group 2 (neuroscience) and Group 4 (lecture/lab) requirements. Note that by double counting lecture/labs, students will not be able to graduate with fewer hours in the major. If they double count lecture/labs, students will take more psychology electives (Group 5) to total 36 hours. Group 4 adds between zero and 8 hours of credit, depending on how many lecture/lab combinations are double counted. PSB 3004C EXP 3202C EXP 3422C EXP 3604C Physiological Psychology with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Sensation and Perception with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Conditioning and Learning with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C] Cognitive Psychology with Lab 4 hours [pre-req: PSY 3213C]

Group 5: Psychology Electives: Students must take enough psychology elective courses to total 36 hours of psychology courses (not including General Psychology). Group 5 adds between 14 hours and 21 hours of credit.

a. Up to 6 total hours of either Directed Individual Study (DIS: PSY 4911-4914) and/or Research Topics (PSY
4920) can count toward psychology electives. These are taken by permission of instructor only. Students can take a total of up to 24 hours of these research experience courses (a combination of 18 hours PSY 4920; 12 hours DIS), but only 6 hours total will count toward the psychology major. Honors Thesis work (PSY 4039r). Students can use Honors Thesis work to bring the total number of hours of research experience to 9 hours maximum. For example, if a student took 6 combined hours of PSY 4920 and PSY 4911, he/she can count an additional 3 hours of Honors toward the major. A student who took no PSY 4920 or PSY 4911-14 could count 9 hours of PSY 4039 toward the major. Courses with a WST prefix will not count toward psychology electives even though they are listed on the psychology course look up. Psychology electives can include any psychology courses not listed earlier, as well as classes listed under Groups 2, 3 or 4 as long as they have not been used to fulfill other requirements. In other words, any course used as an elective cannot be double counted for another psychology requirement. For students who have not taken any 4000 level psychology courses to fulfill requirements, at least 3 hours of psychology electives must be a 4000 level course, which cannot include PSY 4911-14, PSY 4920, or PSY 4039).

Computer Literacy For Psychology majors who have not completed university computer-literacy requirements before August 28, 2006, this requirement may be met only by successfully completing CGS 2060 (3), CGS 2100 (3), BSC 2010L (1), or

ISC 3313 (3).

Conditions for Being Terminated from the Major In keeping with university policy regarding academic mapping, students who fail to meet milestones for two consecutive semesters may be required to change majors. Students should consult their academic MAP for the milestones that must be met each semester. Milestones include completion of specific courses as well as overall GPA requirements. Students also will be terminated from the psychology major if they receive more than four grades lower than C- in any psychology courses or pre-requisite courses for the major taken for credit at Florida State University or elsewhere. Students will be allowed to repeat courses according to university policy. However, repeating a course successfully (with a C- or better) will not remove the D or F from their record. Thus, if a student successfully repeats a psychology course, the successfully repeated course will be allowed to fulfill the requirement. However, the initial grade still will count as a grade below C-. 6/24/2010
