~17AND DIAPHRAGM E91 PROTECTOR

INSTALLING THE PROTECTOR: Install Protector in a vertical position to allow the well fluids, cement, etc., to drain out of the cup when the instrument is not operating. A shut-off should be installed betweenthe flow line and the Protector for inspection and/or repairs of the protector and gage system. Install the two inch female sub half of the Protector on a vertical riser. Before the housing of the protector is installed, check for correct amountof hydraulic fluid in the gagesystem. The diaphragm cup (Item 2) which can be observed through the bottom of the protector housing, should be collapsed so the sides of the rubber cup are touching. If the cup is round (Fig. 1) the system must be reloaded. See loading the system below. LOADINGTHE SYSTEM: Place protector housing in a vertical position (top up). Removecheck valve cap (Fig. 1) from check valve (Item 1). Attach handpump to check valve (Fig. 2), but do not tighten. Fill handpump reservoir with MARTIN-DECKER W15 fluid. Operate handpump plunger.slowly to bleed air from pump at check valve connection. Tighten hand pump on check valve (Item 1). Keep fluidlevel in hand pump reservoir at least one half full during loading procedure so that no air will be pumpedinto system. Turn damper stem on gageand/or recorder counter-clockwise several turns to relieve dampingeffect. The damper stem is designedto disengagethe threads allowing openpassageof system for p bleeding. Loosen the pipe lug on top of the gage and/or loosen the tubing connectionon the pressure tube socket inside the recorder. Pump fluid into the system and bleed at gage and/or recorder until no air bubbles appear. A8 air will seek the highest level, the gage and/ or recorder must be higher than the Protector when the system is being loaded. The hose should be laid out straight if possible. Tighten on gageand/or tubing connectionon . Pump enoughfluid into system to cause rubber diaphragm sides to touch as shawnin (Fig. 2). Do not over pump so that rubber diaphragm (Item 2) is forced into nut (Item 3). Remove

hand pump from check valve. Replace and tighten check valve cap on check valve (Item 1). Push in on the damper stem and turn clockwise to engagethe threads. The damper stem may be adjusted for desired damping effect in use. Replace and tighten on protector union. REPAIRS: If check valve (Item 1) is broken off in protector housing (Rem 4) remove broken off portion with an easy out. Replace with a new F330-1 check valve and follow loading procedure. The F350-1 check valve has a l/4 NPT. To replace E40 rubber diaphragm cup (Item 2). a. Remove check valve and hose from protector housing. Unscrew hose fitting from protector housing. Do not unscrew hose coupling nut fro_mnipple. b. Remove J79 brass protection nut (Rem 3). (Use MARTIN-DECKER nut wrench T589 if available). c. Remove rubber diaphragm cup from protector housing. d. Wash and clean inside of protector housing and open holes in protector housing. Clean small seal groove in protector body. e. Press new E4O/E40-1diaphragm into protector housing msking sure rubber diaphragm flange is evenly in protector body groove. f. Apply thread grease or lubriclnt (not thread seal) to brass protection nut amI wrew into place. The brass protection nut will be approximately flush with protector housingwhen properly installed, and the rubber diaphragm cup will be held in place as shown. Do nal over- tighten, it will damagethe rubber diaphragm cup. g. Replace check v&e and hose on protector housing. h. Follow loading procedure.
