Climate Change and Sustainable Development

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Excessive GHG CO2 contributes to global Warming of the planet (only 3.8% by Africa)

Increase in CO2 in the atmosphere = rise in global temperature. SD cares for actual and future of mankind

Saying : Environmental activist & eco feminist Vandana Shiva

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

When we think of war in our times, our minds turn to Iraq Afghanistan. But the bigger war is the war against the planet. This war has its roots in an economy that fails to respect ecological and ethical limits. In the same breath: A former weapons inspector in Iraq interviewed by the New York Times in 2003 commented: I am more worried about global warming than I am of any major military conflict.

Importance of this campaign with regard to Climate Change

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

-To produce more vital oxygen and take in GHG CO2

-This natural process cools down the globe. -Composting naturally reduces volume of waste with production of beneficial compost. Less chemical fertilizer = less energy to manufacture same = less CO2 emission = less Water pollution -To increase water catchment capacity due to the favorable altitude of the town. - Low input with high output with the participation of all stakeholders

Gender dimension & impact of climate change in Mauritius

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sea level mean rise (1998-2007) 2.1mm per year & average temperature rise of 0.74C compared to 1961-90. Decreasing trend in annual rainfall of around 8% over Mauritius since the 1950s but paradoxically more frequent torrential rains resulting in flash floods.

Women as wives and mothers are more prone to such impacts e.g. flash flooding (lack of mobility), epidemics, droughts (domestic chores)
Women are at the center of climate change & 70% of the worlds poor are women, these women are more likely to suffer as a consequence of climate change.

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOL TARGETS)

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

*The project has revealed that in fact women are more responsive at grass root level to understand & adapt strategies in respect of climate change. *Women have proved that they must be given an equal say in any decision-making process in matters related to environment.
*Equal representation of women in all sphere of decision making was felt (art 12 13 SADC).
.

Sustainability & Replication

PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

This is an ever ending campaign that will be replicated to other regions of Curepipe and why not to other Local Authorities. Green plants planted will breathe in CO2 and give O2 for its life time.

Lessons learned
PROJECT: CLIMATE CHANGE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Men, women and children are equally concerned and conscious of environmental matters. Women are by far more responsive to such projects Need to shift from predominantly male dominated hierarchy in decision making bodies to an equal gender representation.
Educate a women = Educate a family
Women must be prioritised in any actions and programmes to address climate change
