Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publi cati ons; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publi cati ons, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Notif ication of any inaccuracy or ambiguit y found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This standard was prepared under the authority of the Plastics Industry Standards
Committee and is one of a series of standards relating to PTFE products.
A preliminary draft was prepared by the National Fluorocarbon Division of the
Plastics Institute of Australia. In preparing the standard cognizance was taken of
BS Draft 68/1323, Polyetrafluoroethylene Skived Tape.
This standard specifies the classification and composition of skived tape, including
finish, and physical and electrical characteristics required of the tape.
Attention is drawn to the fact that skived tape may be used or referred to as PTFE
sheet in its larger sizes.

This standard makes reference to the following Australian and American

standards:
AS 1145 Method for the Determination of Tensile Properties of Plastics
Materials
AS 1193 Method for the Determination of the Density and Relative Density
(Specific Gravity) of Plastics excluding Cellular Plastics*
AS 1255 Methods of Test for Electrical Characteristics of Solid Plastics
Insulating Materials*
ASTM D1708 Method of Test for Tensile Properties of Plastics by Use of
Microtensile Specimens.

Australian Standard Specification

for
POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE (PTFE) SKIVED TAPE

1 SCOPE. This specification applies to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) skived tape

in a range of thicknesses up to 5.0 mm, for mechanical, electrical and chemical
applications.

2 COMPOSITION. The tape shall be manufactured from unpigmented PTFE resin

and shall be free from any foreign material.

3 CLASSIFICATION. PTFE tape shall be classified as follows:
Grade A — premium quality tape of which the properties shall comply with the
Grade A requirements of Table 1.
Grade B — general purpose tape of which the properties shall comply with the
Grade B requirements of Table 1.
Grade C — a tape for use in non-critical applications of which the properties
shall comply with the Grade C requirements of Table 1.
NOTE: It is recommended that purchasing specifi cati ons should refer to the above classifi cati ons.

4 CONDITIONING. Samples for test shall be conditioned for 24 h at 23 ± 2°C.

NOTES:
1. PTFE does not absorb moisture so a requir ement for control of humidity is not specifi ed.
2. PTFE undergoes a transit ion during which there is a signif icant volume change in the
materi al. The majori ty of this change occurs between 19° and 20°C.

5 APPEARANCE AND FINISH. The colour of the tape may vary from white to
mottled grey and the tape shall be free from obvious surface defects and inclusions that
could affect its serviceability.

6 INTERNAL DEFECTS. The tape shall be substantially homogeneous and free

from internal defects likely to affect its serviceability. Methods of test and acceptable
limits shall be agreed between purchaser and supplier.

7 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES. The tolerance on nominal length and

width of skived tape shall be −0, +1.5 mm.
The tolerance on thickness shall conform to Table 2. The thickness shall be
determined with a dial-gauge micrometer provided with a flat foot of minimum area
36 mm2 which applies a pressure of 15 to 30 kPa to the specimen.

8 TENSILE STRENGTH AND ELONGATION AT BREAK. Test specimens

having the form and dimensions shown in Fig. 1 shall be cut from the tape in the
