Student investigates aspects of gun culture in Britain and the USA What does the term Gun Culture mean?- EG USA guns are protected in their constitution (2nd amendment) Watch power point on Guns and Music and gather initial ideas. 1. What do we mean by the word culture? What do we mean by the word identity? Look these terms up online. Students think about their own identity. List food/dress/celebrations/music/language 2. Research the politics of the gun in the USA /UK using Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_the_United_States http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_the_United_Kingdom Students should prepare answers to the following: a. Explain in your own words what gun culture means in USA and how it means something different in the UK b. From your research what do you think the gun represents /symbolises? In the gun culture section of the USA document it states that the neutrality of this section is disputed. What does this mean and why? c. In the USA what is the NRA and what does it stand for? d. Explain some of the arguments why Americans want to continue to be allowed to have guns e. Summarise the key points of gun law in the UK f. Recount a crime involving guns Evaluate wikipedia as a source of information 3. Use the Gangs/Gun Crime resource pack to investigate different aspects of who is to blame and what can be done? Investigate different aspects of the issue and assemble in the form of a newspaper article.
