Republicans Launch a Bill to Target Teachers with Criminal Behavior

The bill Bob Huff and Assemblyman Curt Hagman are planning to propose includes eliminating restrictions in union contracts, removing the Four Year rule. Emily Hwang Staff Writer With recent sexual accusations against teachers in nearby communities, California Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff has proposed a new bill that will allow schools to accelerate the process of removing teachers from their positions. Recently, California state lawmakers divulged a new legislation triggered by several allegations of sexual abuse by school teachers. The bill Huff and Assemblyman Curt Hagman are planning to propose includes eliminating restrictions in union contracts, removing the Four Year rule, ending unnecessary delays in dismissal process, reforming the panel review process, conforming disciplinary pay, creating a paper trail, and stripping pension from felons. These points give the right to schools to dismiss teachers for their actions to keep a safe environment at school. Those in favor of the bill believe that it will discourage and provide relief from any offensive situations. Unlike the current legislation, schools will be able to use all the files and records of each teacher including those older than the current four-year limit and will be allowed to discharge a teacher without having to pay them. This new legislation gives schools an easier way to terminate teachers with criminal records. The bill was proposed after two teachers from Miramonte Elementary in Los Angeles were arrested for their alleged lewd actions and Diamond Bar Lorbeer Middle Schools teacher Steven Andrews, 41, was charged with allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old student. The lawmakers attended a press conference discussing their upcoming legislation on March 13. Andrews will be attending a pre-trial conference addressing the charges that is scheduled on April 23. The local Republicans believe that schools should be a safe place where students will not have to worry about getting sexually abused by their teachers. In response to Andrews charges, Huff and Hagman, who is a representative for Chino Hills and Diamond Bar, decided to unveil a new legislation to target teachers who are engaged in illegal deeds that may damage the school reputation while making it an unsafe environment for students. Both Huff and Hagman are hoping to pass this bill throughout the state in order to [Please see PROPOSAL on page 3]

Xing Yen Quek SCHOLARS: Students received a balloon of their respective class color, a Top 10 pin, a Disneyland lollipop, a special Top 10 t-shirt, and a letter of recognition praising their efforts. Joy Chow Contributing Staff Writer A week of special events and giveaways was organized to honor the highachieving students on campus. Junior United Student Body Commissioners of Academics Pauline Nguyen and Chris Lee were in charge of supervising all activities and choosing top students in each grade level. We were looking for allround great students who never give up. We were not just looking at ones academic qualifications. A 4.0 GPA did not guarantee anyone a spot on Top 10, Lee said. Students applied for a spot in Top 10 of each class through an extensive application which was due on March 13. The following week, the two commissioners reviewed and compiled a list of 10 superb students from each class. Each of the selected students received a balloon of their respective class color, a Top 10 pin, a Disneyland lollipop, a special Top 10 T-shirt, and a letter of recognition praising their unyielding efforts. Two days ago, all Principals Honor Roll students, students with a 3.5 GPA or higher, received special bags full of candy treats that were distributed during lunch in the USB room. A Renaissance Giveaway was held on Tuesday. The icecream themed activity was given to reward students who have maintained impressive grades. Students with a gold activities card enjoyed strawberry shortcakes; silver card holders received ice cream sandwiches; and bronze students had popsicles. Today, a get ready for class lunchtime activity was held. Participates are expected to complete a series of tasks as quickly as they can to prepare for school. The Top 10 luncheon is also held today. In addition, all of the Top 10 students will be recognized at the Spring Sports/Top 10 Rally to be held on April 26. A slideshow of the students will be shown. Two Blackouts DBHS Student Alex Miller Chosen as Miss Diamond Bar Occur in One Week
OUTAGE: Despite the rumors of early campus closure, the administration decided to keep the school in session due to concerns regarding student safety and school liability. Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor Due to unforeseeable technical complications, two power outages occurred on the Diamond Bar High School campus last week. Despite the fright caused by the blackouts, students and staff maintained professionalism and composure throughout the incidents. The first blackout of the week occurred on Tuesday, March 22 at approximately noon, reportedly due to equipment failure by Edison. The power did not return until near the end of fifth period, nearly two hours earlier than estimated by the company. The administration followed the protocol and notified the students and staff that school would be in session as normal. In the event of a blackout, we first let the district know. We then contact Edison. I contact the deputies, and the deputies then contact the police department

and the city, Principal Catherine Real stated. The administration decided to keep the school in session due to concerns regarding student safety and school liability. Early student dismissal would result in further complications, including sending notifications to parents and shutting down the campus. Two days after its precursor, another power outage occurred during the last ten minutes of first period. The power was quickly restored minutes before the second period began; however, staff members were still notified of the situation via text messaging to avoid confusions. The power outage was potentially from the construction combined with some breakdown on our main breaker panel. When our district electrician went to reset the system, the [mechanical] handle broke, Real explained. Fortunately, the administration found an immediate solution to the problem, which was to sacrifice the power for the gym building area to restore the power for the rest of the campus. AP Environmental Science Classes Participate in Environmental Projects

EARTH: The organization aspires to lower environment costs and rely mainly on renewable energy . Four other APES classes are also taking on eco-friendly projects. Katlyn Lee Contributing Staff Writer A student-run group called Students Out to Lead a Revolution Organization is working with the city to renovate district schools by implementing solar panels to conserve energy. Angela Jensvolds second period AP Environment Science class came up with SOLAR, whose goal is to lower environment costs and rely on solar or other renewable energy sources in the Walnut Valley Unified School District. Besides targeting high school students, SOLAR is also trying to inspire elementary students to be environmentally friendly. The SOLAR organization is collaborating with Jeff Bloedorn, WVUSDs Director of Maintenance, Operations, Transportation, Facilities, and solar company Ecolectrics. The students are also working with solar company Ecoletrics, which may supply the solar panels for WVUSD. We are working very closely with Bloedorn and encouraging the district to also work on this project, SOLAR president, senior Shannon Fan, shared. Fan and organization officers Madeline Le, Angie Shu, Haidee Pan and Lauren Chung met with Bloedorn to discuss ways to develop the project. The members will present their project to the school board on April 11. Jensvold thinks highly of the project and commented, Having solar power in our school district would benefit the environment and save the school district money. We're facing a budget crisis and every little bit we can save helps. She continued, I would love it if the school board approves the plan to go solar, starting with Walnut Elementary. If the students do an excellent job presenting the idea to the board, it's possible. To reach out to students and create awareness of renewable energy, the organization held a rally today that included performances by the DBHSs Marquis and All Male Dance Crew. The event also offered a game and photo booth area for students. We hope to branch out to elementary schools to teach them about solar energy and its benefits. We really want to implement solar panels in all the schools in the district, Fan said. Four other APES classes are also taking on eco-friendly projects. Jensvolds third period class is focusing on conserving paper by switching to e-books. Instructional Dean David Hongs class project, Receipts Emailed Directly, also known as Project RED, focuses on elimination of paper receipts by having stores email their receipts to customers using a digital receipt programmer, Square. Science teacher Johnny Hwangs class is focusing their project on waste composting. Breakdown is a student-run environmental organization developed in DBHS and created with the intent to reduce organic waste from school cafeterias through composting, an effective method of harvesting potentially harmful waste and converting it into nutrient-rich fertilizer, the organizations president, senior Laura Gad, said. Bottle My Water, created by Greg Valors APES class, is promoting the use of reusable metal water bottles instead of plastic water bottles. The organization is also focusing on replacing school water fountains with more sanitary fountains called Global Tap. I think this is [the] very best part of the APES program, because the teachers are involved, the students are involved, and they are making a difference in the world. Not only are they affecting their lives, but also the lives of their classmates. Its a pretty unique program, Im happy to be a part of it, Hong said.

Editorial
Idealistically, high school is a stage of life where students either learn to take responsibility for their actions or suffer the consequences. In order to impress upon the students the importance of responsibility, punishments are meted out for those who misbehave. The most common form of punishment utilized by many high schools is detention, where the offending student is kept after school, as a time of reflection for his or her misdeed. Receiving detentions at Diamond Bar High School, however, is a laughable matter that is rarely taken seriously and is commonly viewed as a waste of time. In order to bring much needed discipline to the student body, school administrators must consider more effective ways to enforce a strict system of punishment.

THE BULLS EYE

Editorial

As a result of the school administrators and the faculty members half-hearted approach to maintaining a serious atmosphere in detention rooms, students of DBHS overlook the seriousness of their punishment. Detention is no longer a troublesome experience, but just another meaningless hour to complete school work, take a nap, or even send text messages to friendsit is extremely ironic how students are allowed to do the very tasks that resulted in punishments in the first place. In order to reinforce the idea that detention is a punishment rather than mere obligation, school administrators should work toward creating firm rules and a stricter atmosphere. It goes without saying that the faculty members who supervise

Eye of the Editor

the detentions must begin to enforce the no cell phone policy, as cell phones often seem to be the main source of distraction for many students in detention. Furthermore, students should be mandated to complete various disciplinary tasks, such as writing a statement of reflection or scraping gum off school properties. Many local schools have implemented such protocols for students in detention already, and DBHS should follow suit in order to enforce the function of the system of discipline. In addition, it is glaringly evident that students attach little to no significance to other forms of discipline besides detention. A large number of students reportedly choose to serve Saturday Work Adjustment Program, where the offending

students gather on campus to pick up trash on a Saturday, over ordinary detentions because of the greater opportunity for student interaction that it provides. To make matters even worse, some students opt to deliberately miss their class detention time in order to attend SWAP as their chance to socialize with their friends. It is ultimately the administrations responsibility to acknowledge the problem and assess a solution. If a new and stricter protocol can be taken upon the rule-breaking students, our school will begin to see a gradual change in the students behavior and attitude. However, if this inefficient system of discipline continues, the school will only come to foster the students will to manipulate the schools system.

They Found Love in a Hopeless Place

Sarah Cho Asst. A&E Editor People everywhere have been eagerly anticipating the reunion of our favorite couple, Rihanna and Chris Brown. To the relief of people everywhere, the romance of our generation is back on, according to their new collaborative track Birthday Cake. The couple had taken a brief hiatus for the past three years due to some irreconcilable differences, but no one had truly believed they were really over. Everyone knew of their undying love and devotion for each other. Chris Brown had left marks of his love all over her body in the form of purplish bruises and bite marks, and thankfully, he can now show his love for her once again. Unbelievably, there are people who stand vehemently opposed to the relationship. Perhaps Chris Brown should smack these pessimistic idiots like he did to Rihanna back in 2009 and prove that they are overreacting it worked for him before. They are completely ignoring the fact that Chris Brown truly loves and cares for Rihanna. After all, according to their new song, all he wants to do is make [her] my [female dog]. He even expresses how much he has missed her body. How adorable. The song clearly demonstrates how gentle and tender Chris Brown had treated her in the past. The song shows how pure and virtuous their love is. happen again. Obviously, he has repented and changed seeing as he served a couple of hours of community service. I am so glad that Rihanna has snapped back to her senses;

Blazing Trails of Satire

LA Tardy Sweep
Lea Chang Feature Editor The Los Angeles City Council recently gave a much needed makeover to the Juvenile Daytime Curfew Ordinance, which previously allowed police officers to issue $250 tickets to truant or late students. The changes issued last month discarded the monetary penalties completely, replacing them with mandatory community service hours and counseling. These improvements will prove much more effective, as having students dole out hundreds of dollars can do nothing to make them learn from their mistakes. Some continue to complain that the previous method of giving out punishments in the form of fines was infinitely better because students and their parents would be loathe to repeat their grievance after having paid so much money the first time. However, the ludicrous tickets were never effective to start with, and the method of issuing them was completely inappropriate. According to statistics from the California Department of Education, although the police force issued over 47,000 tickets for truancy, the rate of students skipping school jumped from 5 percent to 28 percent from 2005 to 2009. Furthermore, when students were punished under the previous ordinance, some were even handcuffed. No matter how unsatisfied critics are with the seemingly lighter consequences, it is doubtful that they intend for harsher

People need to put down their pitch forks and listen to common sense, reason, and logic. It is not as if Chris Brown committed a serious crime; it was merely a little infraction. He only slapped her around a little bit and I am sure she deserved it. Plus, she enjoyed it. She even sings about chains and whips. And besides, it is not like he would hurt her again. An episode of domestic violence is almost always an isolated event. It is not something that is bound to

she finally found her love in a hopeless placea place without her Chris! Girls obviously cannot thrive without boys; Rihanna is a prime example. She had become a successful, independent woman without a man to whip (or beat) this good girl gone bad into place. But, we females must forgive her for her ignorance; she probably lost a few brain cells when Brown last punched her. At least she still remembers her name. And thankfully, she realized the error of her ways

as she rightfully testified on The Jonathan Ross Show that Single life is so overrated. It was blatantly a cry of distress. With the help of Chris Brown, Rihanna has truly done a complete 360. She has returned to her senses and to her man. She is serving as an example to little girls everywhere. She even stood by Chris and defended him on the Internet by attacking her long time fans. Rihanna very politely called a fan unattractive and a bully; she abandoned her fan base who has stood by and supported her just to reunite with her soul mate. How admirable. Rihanna, for the sake of love, I implore you to ignore those backward thinking critics like Reese Witherspoon who called your relationship unacceptable. punishment to include public humiliation and permanent blemishes on student records for often minor indiscretions. These sorts of consequences will only harm students in the long run and benefit no one. Complaints that community service is a mild punishment that lets students off too easily have arisen, but previous experiences in other districts with this same system have yielded stunning results. When Alhambra Unified School District adopted these measures, truancies dropped 42 percent. It is apparent that forcing students to pay fines is impractical, especially as so many of these recorded tardies are due to issues such as the student having to drop off younger siblings at school, types of situations that has nothing to do with willful absences. Therefore, it is much more practical to issue community service or counseling, more lenient punishments that remind the student that he or she still has an obligation to come to school on time. Both students in the Los Angeles Unified School District and their parents must be relieved that these fines are no longer in effect . After such an extreme law, it was high time that a more practical amendment was made. With this sorely needed change finally employed, it will not be long before LAUSD sees the same drops in truancy that AUSD did. (Diamond Bar students may be fined by the Sheriffs Department if caught truant.)

Dear Editor, I am shocked that there are quite a few Asians out there that would deny their race in order to get into college. As I read Dear Betrayers of Asia by Justin Park, I thought: How can they do such a thing?! There is a lot of pressure in an Asian students world. In their parents perspective, there are only two important accomplishments in life: to get into a good college and to get a good job. However, that doesnt give Asians an excuse to lie. Asian students should tell the truth that they are Asian and hope for the best.

Dear Editor, I think your article by Winston Cho about the YouTube stars and how much money they make is great. It was a very entertaining article and it really catches peoples eyes. This article was very informational and it taught me new things I would never have thought and some things I wanted to know, such as how much money YouTube stars make. I have no negative thoughts about this and it summarizes what I would have said about YouTube. I do watch some of thes famous YouTubers. Thanks for this amazing article.

Kony 2012 is a Phony

Earlier this month, Invisible Children launched the Kony 2012 campaign with a video depicting the immoral actions of Joseph Kony and his army, the Lords Resistance Army, instantly gaining attention and many sympathetic supporters. Invisible Children is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 that aims to stop Konys LRA, a rebel army composed of violently radical Christians and captured children. It is notorious for abduction, exploitation, murder, and rape of the people in Uganda. Invisible Children is known for publicizing their cause through the use of filmmaking and social awareness. The organization bases its campaign on publicizing Konys actions and beliefs so that people will take an active part in putting an end to Kony and the LRA by donating money. While it is true that Kony needs to be stopped, the intentions and effectiveness of this campaign are questionable considering Invisible Childrens records and the ineffectiveness of the intervention of the U.S. Invisible Childrens campaign may seem to be a quest for awareness; however, people simply knowing about the situation in Africa will not directly provide support for the actual cause. On the Invisible Children website, people can donate and purchase merchandise that contributes to the Invisible Children fund. In 2011, Invisible Childrens expenses totaled to approximately $8.7 million dollars but only 32 percent of that total actually went to providing immediate support in Uganda. Charity Navigator even rated Invisible Children two out of five stars for accountability and transparency because its finances were not monitored by an established committee which may lead to biased financial

Recently, Jason Russell, a co-founder of Invisible Children, was detained for streaking in public and impeding traffic. The police department did not arrest him because the speculations that he was under the influence of drugs. This further discredits the legitimacy of Invisible Children. Gas Prices: Problem and Solution

Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor Austin Kong A&E Editor Over the past few months, gas prices have been skyrocketing and have created a trend that shows no signs of slowing down. In response to the swelling gas prices, people are blaming the government as the one culpable for these inconvenient prices at the pump. However, this common misconception unjustly places all of the blame to the wrong target. In actuality, the U.S. government is a scapegoat. The misguided and uninformed citizens must realize that the fault lies within the oil speculators who gamble on the petroleum market, and the only effective solution to combat the situation is to become oil independent. The spike in gas prices is due to the instability America is facing with Iran, a powerhouse in the oil market. When tensions rise between Iran and America, Wall Street bankers see this as an opportunity to generate more profita selfish endeavor driven by their insatiable thirst for money. These bankers, who are fully aware that the prices of oil will skyrocket if a war actually commences, invest heavily in the oil market to gain ownership of as much oil as possible, which they later sell at a high price. This unjust method of investing, called oil speculation, has put America in a difficult financial situation as consumers are forced to pay record-high prices for gas. Despite its negative effect on the economy, the greedy bankers continue to speculate, turning a blind eye to the innocent civilians who have no other choice but to yield to their high demands for gas. Crooked corporations that are unfairly speculating on oil are essentially scamming American consumers out of their hardearned money. There are no immediate remedies for the skyrocketing gas prices in the United States. Unfortunately, there is practically nothing America can do to stop the speculators, as these instability because it allows other countries to dictate its own oil prices. Therefore, it is only logical that gas prices would remain relatively placid if the U.S. was to become less dependent on foreign oil. It may take decades, but oil independence is a solution that is worth pursuing. If the U.S.

locate Kony. However, according to the Uganda Media Centre, the LRA has not been active in Uganda since 2006. Focusing efforts in Uganda, as of now, has proven to be ineffective. The U.S. does not have the money to continue activity in Uganda as the U.S. is already struggling with its economy and other domestic problems including unemployment and gas prices. Even though the video does not directly advocate sending in more troops, the organization fears that as the issue of Kony becomes less relevant, the U.S. may have to pull out support. However, leaving the U.S. troops in Uganda proves to be futile, considering that no progress has been made. Kony and the LRA need to be stopped; however, the campaign of Kony 2012 is not the right approach to the problem. Supporting this campaign does not guarantee effective support to those who need it in Africa considering the obscurity of what Invisible Children uses its donations on. Raising awareness has no particular fault; however, this campaign does not provide reliable support for finding Kony, which does nothing to help stop the LRA. The simplistic idea of donating money to Invisible Children is a far cry from solving any problems. Efforts for improvement should be directed to national issues instead of to an issue that an organization endorses with no approachable plan.

companies and their lobbyists make it virtually impossible to introduce new laws that could prevent oil speculation. However, this does not mean that the U.S. is left without any alternatives. The U.S no longer has the luxury to shy away from its only, yet unjustifiably feared, solution to the problem: oil independence. The current situation allows the United States gas prices to be subject to fluctuation and

wants to create a steady trend of gas prices for the future, then it needs to start investing now on becoming oil independent. After the BP Oil Spill of 2010, the U.S. has been very reluctant to utilize offshore oil drilling as a means of accessing more oil due to its supposedly devastating effects on the marine environment. However, offshore oil drillings impact on nature is purely a myth, as there

have been a total of 651 oil spills between 1993 and 2007 releasing only 47,800 barrels of oil, which pales in comparison to the estimated 11 million barrels of oil released due to natural seepages in the ocean floor. Offshore oil drilling has little to no effect on the environment and has proven to even reduce the natural seepages that release far more petroleum into the ocean. The overly circumspect attitude of the U.S. toward nature must not hinder in its path towards oil independence, as it is clearly the only solution. Unfortunately, it is the citizens that must be blamed for the nations inability to expand the offshore drilling production. The Obama administration has already lifted all bans on offshore drilling back in April 2010. However, groups of political activists vehemently opposed the governments decision by occupying and shutting down the oil rigs. These ignorant environmentalists, who claim that another catastrophic event similar to BP Oil Spill is bound to occur, must realize that the citizens of the U.S. simply do not have the luxury of being cautious. All forms of energy production come with risk, and offshore oil drilling is no different. The nation cannot afford to abandon its only viable option towards an oil independent future simply because of an unlikely chance that the plan will yield disastrous results. In times of despair, people always look for someone to point the finger at. They must realize that the fault largely lies within the greedy speculators that continue to prosper as the rest of the country pays record high prices for gas. If America is to solve the oil crisis, it must first recognize that becoming oil independent will lead to a more economically stable future.

Senior Column
Prisca Kim Asst. News Editor I always had such high expectations for my senior column, but writing this is a lot harder than I thought it would be, so here goes nothing. A lot of people say that high school is supposed to be the best four years of your life, but I really hope that thats not true, because that would make the rest of my life pretty dang sucky. To me, high school was an adventure, and it still is. Here at Diamond Bar High School, I went for a quick ride on the neverending roller coaster of life, and as any ride would, it had its ups, downs, twirlies, and plateaus. Even now, I am meeting new people, discovering my likes and dislikes, and making enemies, frenemies, and bifes. The past four years ew by for me, even with all the terrible all nighters, my near death experiences at the double stairs, and all my ghts with mama bear. All throughout high school, I never really had a huge long term goal. I did not and do not have a dream job, or even a dream school; I have no idea what my major will be, and I dont even know if my car will start everyday, but I have come to realize that all of that really does not matter. When I hear the word, high school, the rst thing that comes to mind are all of the amazing people I became friends with, even the ones who will not end up reading my senior column. I think that every single person I met during high school (and middle school and elementary school) has taught me a different value. Thanks friends~ or at least the friends who will read this. First, I need to thank Adam Levine, for being an outstanding singer, a nurturing coach, and my celebrity crush. To CSong, for showing me what it really means to be a fighter. To Minkyung, for inspiring me to be a more caring person, and to never give up, no matter what. To Lea, for introducing me to shabu shabu and teaching me how to control my anger management issues. To 17 year old, for letting me know that I, in fact, am not the worst driver. To Win-Z, for teaching me how to be a legit rapper. Last, but not least, to Mr. List, for tolerating all of my crazy and teaching me to be a better journalist, one article at a time. I also need to give a huge shout out to Hulu Company for providing me with endless entertainment and closed captioning, and always being there for me during my late night TV cravings. Lastly, I am really going to miss the cheap $1.50 brunches of pizzalicious goodness and beautiful breakfast burritos, and I want to thank the lunch lady in the second to last window for always having the fastest line. As Laguna Beach would say, This is the end of the beginning. From here, I look at all of my past successes and failures and learn from them. I do not know what my future holds, but I know that God will lead me in the right direction in order to continue glorifying His name. I cant wait to see what my future has in store for me, but I know that it will involve some major LOL ing! (= Thanks high school, TTYL, -Prisca Gloria Levine Kim

This summer marks the 30th anniversary of Diamond Bar High School. In that time, students have come and gone, but teachers have stayed throughout the years. From Math teacher Mr. Alcosser to Spanish teacher Mrs. Lujan, a few of the faculty members have even been teaching at DBHS since the school rst opened.

Mr. Alcosser was among the first teachers to be hired when the school opened in 1982. He has taught every math class at one point in the 30 years he has been at DBHS and is very thankful to have been part of building the most respected calculus program in the country, detailing his experience at DBHS as transcendental. Mr. Alcosser has witnessed the school population grow from 1100 students to more than 3000 in his time at the school. However, his passion for Bruce Springsteen is one thing that has not changed throughout the years. He has attended over 30 concerts and has gone as far as New Jersey to see Springsteen perform.

Another teacher who has taught at DBHS for 30 years is Mrs. Lujan. She has taught every level of Spanish including AP Spanish. She notes the drastic increase in student population since the school opened in 1982. However, one thing she explains that has not changed is the unwavering dedication to academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. Mrs. Lujan has no complaints about DBHS and wants to teach here for ten more years.

English teacher Mr. Moran has been with DBHS since 1987. As one of the rst English teachers hired, he has taught every level of English at least once in the 25 years he has been here. He has also served as the advisor for the Journalism program and for the Academic Decathlon. Mr. Moran has seen the school change physically with the addition of several new buildings as well as demographically with the addition of a diverse group of students. He appreciates DBHS for its respectful and appreciative students and expects to teach here for three more years.

One of the most respected teachers on campus, Mrs. Clifford has been teaching English at DBHS for 25 years. In that time she has taught nearly every English class provided, including all three levels of underclassman courses: regular and honors, sheltered, and Advanced Placement Literature. In the 25 years she has taught she has seen the school diversify and become more academically driven. However, she wishes to see more students participate in extra-curricular activities such as athletics, performing arts, and even Yearbook, which she advises. For those who have not been lucky enough to have the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Clifford expects to teach for at least ve more years.

Sleeping Habits=Personality?
Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor Scientists have conducted numerous studies regarding the correlation between peoples sleeping positions and their personalities. In order to determine if these studies were true, I analyzed my own sleeping position and even asked a friend to see if her traits correlated with her sleeping position. According to Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, the most popular sleeping position is the fetal position. Supposedly, 41% of the population sleeps like this. As a person who sleeps curled up every night, I was excited to see if my personality corresponded with the position. This type of sleeper tends to be shy and sensitive but may present a tough exterior to the world. After reading this description, I was a tad confused. Many may agree that I seem tough, and deep down I am actually quite sensitive; however, I would not consider myself to be a particularly shy person. I had my doubts after reading this less-than-perfect description but I moved on to the next position. People who adopt the sleeping position appropriately named The Log, lie on their sides with their legs outstretched and arms at their sides. My friend what the study said about her personality, she wrinkled up her nose in distaste and disagreed that she was easygoingI guess it is all about perspective. The Soldier is a sleeping position that does not sound very comfortable. People who sleep in this position lie at on their backs with their arms at their sides. This apparently marks a person who sets high standards and has a quiet and reserved personality. H o w e v e r, a n o t h e r characteristic of this type of sleeper is being gullible. There are also numerous respiratory issues linked to this positionit promotes snoring as the persons tongue has the tendency to fall to the back of his or her mouth. Obviously, this study was truly mesmerizing. I did not know that sleeping positions could dictate how people acted in reality. Although there were some discrepancies, I can conclude that the study was a lot more accurate than I expected. Cellphone: DROID. Girl 1: Your cellphone scares me... Girl 2: I know. Sure, the plain white room and its monotonous furniture arrangements may make one question if he has accidentally walked into an abandoned facility (guilty as c h a r g e d ) ; h o w e v e r, none of that seems to matter for Intiraymi. The restaurants wide selection of mouthwatering South American cuisines will provide anyone with a fullling gastronomic pleasure. I shyly entered the building, highly dubious about my impending experience with Peruvian food. I was a complete stranger to the country and its culture. In fact, the ambiance of the restaurant was so strange and new to me that I felt like an intruder in a Peruvian household. Thankfully, the lady greeted me kindly and offered me a table. After opening up the menu, one question pervaded my mind... What in the world are all these? Causa Rellena de Pollo? Saltado de Camarones? Cau Cau? I couldnt even pronounce these mysterious food items. After much thought, I chose Bisteck a lo Pobre, a $15 plate that apparently translates to Poor Mans Steak. It sounded appropriate, given that I only had a $20 bill in my wallet. Soon after finishing my appetizer (nothing uniquely Peruvian, just a small bun of bread smothered in margarine), my anticipated food arrived. I immediately knew I made the right decision: a tender slice of sirloin steak gently placed on a pile of French fries, complemented with two chunks of deepfried caramelized banana and a bowl of steamed rice topped with a piece of fried egg. The meat was beyond excellent; its avor contained a hint of spicepresumably Peruvianthat Ive never tasted before. What I enjoyed even more were the Platano Fritos, or fried bananas. They were extremely avorful and the extrasweet coating amplified my satisfaction. I guarantee you, you will fall in love with them. And lastly, make sure you ask for the Aji sauce, a thick green paste that strangely resembles green-tea ice cream in a bottle. Simply put, this magical hot sauce is a Peruvian equivalent of the Thai Sriracha sauce: it is good with anything.

There are no words to describe the amount of talent in this 21-year-old actress. I will say that the lms co-stars, namely Amandla Stenberg who played Rue, carried their share of the lm, but Lawrence arguably took the spotlight with her impeccable performance as District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen. Nevertheless, the lm had an extremely talented cast and, apart from the poorly executed one-liner performances from the occasional extra, every single actor shone in his or her own right. Aside from the cast, the lm itself deserves District 12s three-finger sign of respect. The flawless depiction of the impoverished District 12 and its black market, The Hob, would bring tears to anybodys eyes. Personally, the Gamemakers arena evoked that rare feeling of pride when a lm scene based on the novel is shown exactly as one had imagined it. The most striking aspect of the lm is the way that the game was made to interact directly with the theater audience. Host Caesar Flickman would pop into a scene to explain an occasional confusing aspect of the novel to his audience. We are the Capitol. This revelation came to me when, as the Capitol viewers cheered behind their television screens at the end of the lm, the movies audience cheered along. Some might complain that the movie veers too far from the novels original storyline. After watching the lm, I can say wholeheartedly that I am not one of those people. I would even dare to say that the omission of certain Caught between a rock and a hard place...witness the struggles Katniss must face. I could probably take up the entire paper raving about The Hunger Games but I will start by admitting unashamedly that my opinion of this entire series is biased. I have read the books too many times to count and my District 7 Panem ID card is proudly tucked into the clear pocket of my wallet. Whenever I eat blueberries, I hold my breath and imagine that I am eating nightlock. It is also very important to note that, as a fan of the books, I walked into the theater setting myself up for disappointment. Going back to the lm, for a series as big as The Hunger Games, the movies actors are a large part of its success, or in many cases its failure. With that said, if perfection had a name, it would be Jennifer Lawrence.

Billion dollar author, J.K. Rowling, has announced she will be releasing a new book, however, details of the new novel have been scarce. Information such as the title and release date hasnt even been released, but it has been conrmed that the book will be targeted toward adults. The announcement was made on February 23. Fans of the Harry Potter franchise have expressed their extreme enthusiasm and excitement all over the internet using social media sites such as Twitter. Although there were very few particulars released about the plot, certain sources have speculated that it will be of the crime-fiction genre, but Rowling has yet to conrm these speculations. The book comes as a welcome relief to Harry Potter fanatics who have felt deprived since the end of the book series back in 2007. Rowlings most recent endeavor, The Tales of Beedle the Bard was released in 2008, but she has not release any other stories since then. The book will be distributed by publishers, Little, Brown in the United States and Shelley in the United Kingdom, which is a change from her usual publishing companies, Bloomsbury Publishing in the U.K. and Arthur A. Levine Books in the U.S. Additional details on the new novel will be released later this year leaving Rowling enthusiasts in agonizing anticipation.

Nathan Pike Badminton Dominates Hacienda League Wrestles in State

Andrew Choi Contributing Staff Writer Joseph Park Contributing Staff Writer Prior to the start of the 2011-2012 wrestling season, senior co-captain Nathan Pike set his mind on participating in the California Interscholastic Federation State Wrestling Tournament. After extensive training all year and a successful season, Pike was able to advance to CIF Individuals which took place at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. He made it to the Top 16 and is one of only two wrestlers in DBHS history to partake in the CIF State tournament. During the season, Pike wrestled in the 113 pound division with a strong record of 46-4 and has placed first or second in every tournament. Before he entered the state tournament, Pike placed second in the CIF Masters Southern Section. My feelings were a mix of excitement and nervousness, said Pike when he discovered out he would compete in state. Just going to the tournament at state felt like one of the best things in the world, commented Pike. Pike was determined to make state after watching class of 2011 wrestler Brian Ryu who place first in CIF Southern Section in the heavyweight class. Ryu was an All-American Wrestler, who placed twelfth in the state. Pikes wrestling journey began in his sophomore year, after beating a classmate for a spot on the varsity roster. He attended wrestling camps across the country each summer hoping to improve his wrestling skills. He was always putting pressure on himself, the coaches had high expectations for Nathan and he was different from the other wrestlers. said coach Scott Usher. He would practice two hours or more every day, especially on Mondays and Wednesdays when he would go to Mt. San Antonio College to wrestle for an additional two hours. Pike was required to win three tournaments to make State w h e r e a s other schools b e s i d e s Southern Section of California only needed to win two. At the tournament, I made new friends and all of the people there were tough to wrestle. Just going to the tournament at state felt like one of the best things in the world, I would walk onto one of the mats and look around and see how big the arena is and how many people were watching it was pretty cool, said Pike. After graduation, he is planning to pursue his dream of becoming a collegiate wrestler first going to Mt. SAC for two years, then transferring to a university such as University of Southern California. Winston Cho Asst. Sports Editor Continuing its dominating play this season, the Diamond Bar High School badminton team beat Wilson and Maricosta High School 18-3 and 15-6 on March 20 and March 21 respectively. These victories stretches the teams overall record to a solid 6-0. Coming into the match, Wilson made several last minute line-up changes in an attempt to salvage some points in mismatches. However, this attempt failed as all the players performed well. The Brahmas handled the Wilson Wildcats easily as the girls swept all their matches. The number one mixed doubles team of juniors Ryan Huang and Samantha Li took control of the set from the beginning. They bagelled both sets and got DBHS the early lead. When we got serious we really dominated the game, commented Huang. After the win against Wilson, the Brahmas looked to play off of its momentum against a very competitive Maricosta High School. Once again the girls swept their sets contributing key points to the team. Similarly, Huang and Li won their match but struggled early on. After losing their first set 11-7 they made key adjustments and won the next two sets 11-5 each. Sophomore Adrian Sin also put up a valiant effort late in his match but ended up losing. I think I played well cause the guy was junior national and I split with him and almost won, said a disappointed Sin. Sophomore Curtis Li won his mixed doubles and singles but lost in his singles match. We did very well [Maricosta] is the team that most likely will be in the finals against us we, but were pretty sure were going to win, stated Wells. The current badminton team is very strong and expects to win California Interscholastic Federation after coming in second for the last two years. [Our goal] is to win everything.

former MLB player Mike Burns, a member of the class of 96 who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds. In golf, Kevin Na of the class of 01 has competed in the PGA and various international golf competitions. Alex Morgan, a 2007 graduate, has recently achieved international fame as a member of the womens U.S. national soccer team. The school has had many notable representatives in professional sports and for good reason. DBHS sports teams have always managed to bounce back from losing or disappointing seasons due to the hard work of players and coaches. Football is a prime example as in 2009, the teams state rank was 720. However, it quickly recovered thanks to the work of coach Ryan Maine in the season of 2011-2012 who completely turned the team around by introducing a new offensive and defensive system. The team was only one game away from qualifying for CIF in the 2011 season and reclaimed the coveted Branding Iron from rival Walnut High School. This year the team was ranked 450 in the state. Girls Soccer has also made a huge comeback in recent years under the tutelage of Coach Matt Brummett and its league change from the Sierra League to the Hacienda League. Currently ranked 77 in the state and 124 nationwide, it has an impressive record of 155-4. The team also won league for the first time since the 20042005 season. The girls tennis team has also dominated its league this year once again. The team has always been one of the strongest sports in DBHS and has consistently competed for the league championship

We returned seven starters and all of our girls are back so we should be in the finals again. Were the team to beat this year. Teams will have to make massive adjustments to beat us, said Wells. Li, a three year member of the varsity team, has traveled across the world and has gone as far as Puerto Rico and Singapore to compete in various badminton tournaments. She has gone undefeated this season as a part of the number one doubles team with her partner Huang. The team looks to continue its winning streak when it plays Wilson High School again in a home match on April 10.

Sarah Cho Asst. A&E Editor Since its opening in 1982, Diamond Bar High School has held sports to a high standard. They have been an integral part of the schools history and have made a significant impact on campus life. Many of DBHS athletic alumni have gone on to play professional sports. Former DBHS students can be seen playing in the Professional Golfers Association of America, the Major League Baseball, and the National Football League. In the NFL, Jonathan Amaya, who graduated in 2006, plays for the Miami Dolphins while Bret Lockett and Ryan Wendell, who graduated in 2005 and 2004 respectively, play for the New England Patriots. DBHS also proudly represents

every year. It has remained undefeated in league for an astounding six years while competing for the California Interscholastic Federation title in each of those seasons. The most notable of the players is junior Melody Chen who earned the Most Valuable Player award both this year as a doubles player and her freshman year as a singles player in CIF. Although this is just a small selection of all the sports currently hosted at DBHS, they are an accurate representation of the schools records in sports. The sports teams have failed, they have succeeded, and they have thrived. The school spirit DBHS sports have provided is a continual source of inspiration for students and players alike. It has made a positive impact on school life and a facet of DBHS that all students and teachers enjoy.

Boys Tennis Improves to 5-0

Rachel Halpert Sports Editor The Diamond Bar High School boys tennis team overcame last years upsetting loss by beating Walnut High School 13-5 on, March 22. The victory improves the Brahmas undefeated record to 5-0 in league and 8-0 overall while increasing their chances of winning a league title. Once again, Walnut proved to be tough competition for the Brahmas, especially in doubles matches. Nevertheless, Diamond Bar won five of nine doubles matches despite losing all games in the first round. Number one doubles team consisting of senior Oscar Chan and sophomore Elijah Ang recovered from losing their first game by winning their next two games 7-5 and 6-0, respectively. Sophomore doubles team Minsong Hsu and Kenny Sakata impressively beat Walnuts first and second doubles team. The team displayed its strength in the singles division by beating the Mustangs in eight of nine games where the only loss occurred on a substitution. As the singles leader, senior captain Steward Yang won all three of his games by the scores of 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0. We played solid and had a game plan early out. We had the momentum and stuck with it, said Yang. His junior singles teammate, junior Justin Yang, also won all three games as the teams number two singles player. His last game ended after a heated tie-breaker was needed to determine a winner. This match against Walnut was the first real competition this season that tested the ability of crucial for the team because the cross-town rivals took the league title from the Brahmas last season by defeating them in both meetings. Junior captain Jason Chen struggled in the first couple of holes but ended the game on a strong note. He birdied his last four holes to shoot a strong 38. I played fairly well making a great comeback on the last few holes. More importantly is that the team played well. Shooting a score of 181 is just terrific, commented Chen. Consistency defined the whole match for the players. Everyone played at a really high level, said Watkins. Nearly all the Brahmas shot higher than their respective Bonita opponents. The score of 181 shot against Bonita is the lowest score ever in five years. It is also the best score Watkins has seen in his five years of coaching golf at DBHS and ten years coaching at Foothills High School . The Brahmas are leading the Hacienda League shooting an average score of 189 per nine holes in league play and 196 overall. The Brahmas have been playing like league champions all season. 6-4 Win Against Diamond Ranch

Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor Diamond Bar High Schools baseball team came victorious last week as the Brahmas defeated Diamond Ranch Panthers in their second league game on Thursday, March 22. This impressive win updates the teams record to 2-0 league, 7-1 overall. Winning is great. I give credit to every kid in that dugout, commented head coach Eric Shibley. He added, I think [the game] goes to show that its certainly a team effort. Both teams did not hesitate to gain full control of the game from the beginning of the match. After two routine outs, senior starting pitcher Zach Quiroz extended the first inning by giving up two straight walks. The two passballs then put both Panther r u n n e r s in scoring position. After giving up a run to a player, the Brahmas increased their dynamic defense to prevent an additional potential run. The Brahmas responded with a run of their own when senior Henry Omana brought in a junior Austin Szulczewski on a sacrifice fly, concluding the inning with a tie. However, the Brahmas werent able to maintain the tie for long as the Panthers scored a run in the second inning. During the bottom of third, junior infielder Tommy Delgadillos single catalyzed a series of strategic plays that led the Brahmas to successfully score three runs in the inning, placing them in a 4-2 lead. I am really impressed with the role-playing of the each member of the team. A lot of kids are buying into being teammates, Shibley said. The Brahmas also displayed strong defense throughout the match, as they executed an impressive double play to end The top of the fourth inning. Szulczewski made a diving catch in right-center and still managed to throw out the runner who failed to tag up at first. However, the Panthers did not retreat their aggressive playing, as they ended the bottom of the inning with another double play of their own. The fifth inning served as a turning point of the game. Diamond Ranch evened the score at four by scoring two crucial runs. However, the Brahmas did not hesitate to rise back and secure their victory as junior first baseman Zeph Walters hit a two-run homerun, his first of the season. I made a good swing on it. Good things happen, said Walters. The players preserved their lead of 6-4 until the end of the match. The players believe that their wellestablished teamwork was the driving force for their success on the field. We did great. I got to give it up to my defense, they made the plays behind me, commented Quiroz, Were just so bonded well together. I feel the chemistry on and off the field. The team is proud and content with the season thus far and rightfully so. In its first league match on March 20 against the West Covina Wildcats, the Brahmas trounced the Bulldogs 11-4 with three doubles and a grand slam by Cavozos, his third homerun of the season, who had finished with a notable seven RBI. I am really tickled with this group. I am pleased with what theyve done. Ive always believed in them, shared Shibley. With seven wins under their belt, the Brahmas are seeking to earn the top spot in league by improving on pitching. The Brahmas hope to continue their success in their next away game tomorrow against their crosstown rival, Walnut Mustangs.

I am really impressed with the role-playing of the each member of the team.

This match stretched the teams league record to 5-0. It has won league three consecutive years and expects to do so again. We hope to win again and were on a good route. Were 5-0 now in league with 7 matches left and want to get as many of our individuals in CIF. We want as many golfers if not all six in CIF individuals, said Watkins. [The hurdle team] is still coming out of a slump, but we are getting back into shape. The girls are looking a lot better than [how they were] at the beginning of the season. The guys are pushing each other as well, stated senior hurdles captain, Bryant Cheng. The teams next meet will be away against Walnut High School tomorrow. The team expects to exceed their previous performances from their past two meets. Walnut is always good competition. There is a lot of rivalry there, so I always look at [their team] as one you cannot underestimate.
