Measures to Contain the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Continue

Using the worst-case scenarios calculated by scientists, a months worth of leaking oil from this spill can fill enough gallon milk jugs to cover more than 11,300 miles. Eric Lee Business Manager British Petroleum owns the leaking oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and is taking actions to contain the oil spill. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is becoming larger because it is being left unfixed. It is now approaching the Louisiana coastline and poses a threat to the marine life in that region. United States President Barack Obama has called for action to contain the oil spill and prevent the leakage from continuing. As of three weeks ago, a third leak in the oil rig was found; this leak is spilling the most amount of oil into the ocean. Obama has been under pressure to deal with this month-long spill, which has now become an oil slick. According to several experts with the knowledge to calculate the severity of oil spills, the current situation of the oil spill is far worse than the [Please see LEAK on page 2]

DANCE: Attendees had the opportunity to participate in various activities, such as playing games and taking pictures, if they did not want to dance. All activities were free. Ashley Ahn Feature Editor This years prom, An Affair to Remember, was held at the Nixon Library on Saturday, May 15 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Nixon Library was chosen because it was, according to Class of 2011 advisor Latitia Thomas, beautiful, elegant, romantic [and] surrounded by twinkling lights and rose gardens. The Nixon Library is a replica of the White Houses East Room, and little decoration was needed because of the already furnished room. Senior Ashton Pike commented, I loved the fact that there was beautiful scenery all around. There were two dance floors: one indoors in the White House East Room, and one outdoors in the First Ladys Rose Garden. Carriage rides took place outdoors. The East Room in the Nixon Library was decorated with big screens that projected music videos, neon lights, and a stage that held the disc jockey. Senior Bing Tan commented, It was definitely an affair to remember. At approximately 10 p.m., the title of Prom King, Queen, Prince, and Princess were awarded. The title of Prom King was awarded to senior Tim Huang, Queen was awarded to senior Anh Le, Prince was awarded to junior Raymond Naval, and Princess was awarded to junior Chandra Oh. After the results were announced, the four winners commenced the traditional KingQueen and Prince-Princess dance. The Prom Prince and Princess were allowed to join after several minutes, followed by the rest of the attendees. Outside, in the First Ladys Garden, a swing band played music while instructors offered ballroom, salsa, or swing lessons to any couples who wanted to learn. Tables were scattered around the dance floor and a buffet of snacks, including brownies, chips and salsa, cookies, sandwiches, were in front of the dance floor. Attendees also had a choice of

The Gulf of Mexico oil leak may surpass the extent of previous oil spills, such as the one that occurred in 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska caused by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker. The oil spill from Exxon Valdez is considered the worst oil spill in history, resulting in millions of environmental damages, particularly affecting the livelihood of fishermen and wildlife. Three weeks ago, efforts to contain the Gulf of Mexico oil spill centered on a huge oil containment dome, which was the size of a four-story building, that engineering teams hoped would corral the oil that continues to spout from the oil rig. Officials hoped that this oil spill containment method would work, but they worried over the possibility of failure since it was never tried before at such extremes. The large containment dome, however, did not work because the dome became clogged with methane hydrate crystals, which are ice crystals that contain methane and water. These crystals created buoyancy inside the dome and prevented the dome from sinking to the bottom of the ocean. The government has now allowed BP to use dispersants. These dispersants will break the oil into tiny drops, which make it easier for naturally occurring bacteria in the ocean to break down the oil into water and carbon dioxide. Due to the extreme depth of the seafloor, efforts to mend the broken pipe of the oil rig are hindered. BP continues to try various methods to completely impede the oil leak, but so far, none of them have been successful in bringing an end to the oil spill.

Jeff Brose, Irma Lujan, Steve Salmons, and Bill Schafer were the four nominees for Teacher of the Year. The winner, Brose, was announced by Principal Denis Paul at the luncheon. I was thrilled when I saw my wife and children thats when I knew that I had been named Teacher of the Year, explained Brose. He added, I did not expect to win any award. The other candidates were very strong and equally deserving of the award. Retiring teachers, Nick Cuccia, Barbara Ellis-Quinn, Brenda Henson, Salmons, Jim Salyer, Schafer, Tom Toby, and Mike Wendt, were also honored. The Teacher Appreciation Luncheon was started in 2004. At first, individual parent groups planned their own luncheon to honor teachers. The first five groups, Brahma Boosters, Brahma Foundation, Council of African American Parents, Chinese American Parents Association, and Korean American Parents Association formed the Five Families. As more parent groups were created, the five became the Super Six when HOPE joined and then became the Magnificent Seven with the addition of Parents of India and Neighboring Countries. Throughout the years, local businesses, including 7-Eleven, Albertsons, Bella Napoli, Mr. Gs Pizzeria, Southwest Cruise & Sales, Subway , Target Corporation, Tri Counties Association, and Ultrasound Productions, have continued to donate and support DBHS. Other businesses farther away, including Harbor Cruise in San Diego, Mauricios Mexican Restaurant in San Dimas, and Niagara Bottling Company in Ontario, also contributed.

Eye of the Editors

Along with increased class sizes and a shortage of elective classes, summer school classes have also been restricted due to budget problems the district is currently and has been facing. The new summer school rules prohibit students from taking several high school classes, such as Civics and Economics, at nearby community colleges for credit. Along with this, few of these courses are offered to students on campus during the summeradding on to schedule conflicts that may arise for students who plan on taking electives or sports. Though the conflicts do not force students to drop classes or electives, they do discourage students from taking the classes they truly want to take. Though the lottery system that Diamond Bar High School has adopted is very objective and leaves no room for bias, there are some factors that the administration should consider when deciding which students get into summer school. For example, many students need to take a class over the summer in order to fit their elective class into their schedule. Students who do not have luck resort to dropping important classes, such as a science or a language. To add on, many students who do get into summer school simply do it to get a class over and done with. Summer school students should be chosen through an application process, instead of through a lottery system, in order to ensure that students who have good reason to take summer school get into the class. It makes sense that students who have failed any courses be given priority for summer school classes, but the lottery system, through its lack of bias, is actually damaging to students who need summer school for scheduling reasons. Beginning last year, students were prohibited from taking seven periods, which posed a problem for students taking various electives and sports. The summer school situation makes scheduling harder on students. Though the lottery system may not be the main problem, it adds on to the fact that the lack of summer school availability discourages students from taking classes that pertain to their interest. If this continues, electives and sports will lose members. Students should not be chosen at random for summer school classes. Rather, students who have a high grade point average, good attendance, and a substantial reason for taking a summer school course should be favored. Students should be able to enhance their skills in their areas of interest, not be forced to disregard their electives or sports because of a lack of classes available during the summer. DBHS needs to ensure that students are able to fulfill their academic desires in both required classes and extra electives. The lottery system that DBHS has adopted prevents students from doing so and is ironically unfair in its attempt to be fair.

The lottery system may prevent many students from attaining the schedule they wish to have, but it is most likely the fairest way to do it. James Powell, Sophomore

Its not fair in the way the lottery itself is. But the priority isnt because some kids just use Brahma Tech and IB to get in and most drop out later. Jessie Chen, Junior

Progress Without Change

Marcel Boubion Asst. Editorial Editor The candidates for the Superintendent of Public Instruction election have split into two groups; some want to reinforce the standard while others are pushing for change. The Chair of the Senate Education Committee, Gloria Romero, seeks to change the education system, while the other leading contender, Larry Aceves, focuses on areas such as finances and making schools a better teaching environment. Romeros ideals challenge an already productive education system, while Aceves focuses on necessary changes outside of the system and inside of the classroom. Aceves is the right candidate to support an already productive system. A group of reformists have influenced Romero to push for a change in which teachers with better students receive a better report to show parents and students interested in taking their course. This change puts teachers who work with students that do not excel in the classroom at a disadvantage. Romeros main goal is, in short, to permit parents and students to choose teachers that have better statistics on how

The Only Right Vote

efficiently. Only teachers at higher performing school districts will benefit from her reform. This biased system will be inefficient because inadequate teachers are not the problem in most low ranking schools. Even though Aceves does not feel the current system needs reform, he does recognize the importance of keeping teachers accountable for their students performance. This cannot be done without proper materials. Since reformists have not prioritized finances as a main goal, teachers in bad school districts will continue to suffer. Instead of focusing on areas that need help, Romero is finding ways to reward teachers with better students. If this sort of pressure is applied, then teachers will begin to give out high grades to undeserving students. The education system is not in need of complete reformit needs attention in finances. Aceves is the only candidate with priorities that will accomplish this. CY Tan Asst. Editorial Editor With the legislation of an emergency three-month extension in Ren Prvals presidency, about 2,000 Haitians organized in riot, the largest political protest recorded in Haiti. The protesters were not without cause; Prvals lengthened presidency, which has been extended from February 2011 to May 2011, has alerted many as Haiti has a long and destructive history of one-man rule. However, with more than 15 percent of Haitis population homeless and countless political buildings missing, the earthquake-ravaged countrys predicament has made elections very difficult, but not impossible. Nevertheless, for a nation on the edge of political collapse, it is vital that Haiti holds elections to develop a healthy and legitimate government, which can only be achieved through elections integral for the countrys recovery and reconstruction. The protesters, a coalition by the name of Heads Together of Popular Organizations, criticized Prval for taking advantage of Haitis situation in order to remain in office and failing to adhere to the constitution while violating Haitis trust. Though some of the protesters demonstrations were criminal, the political friction that caused them to condemn the government was not. Like every nation, Haiti needs political elections and a failure to hold them would not only be a mistake, but also gravely unconstitutional. With elections for Parliament already passed and unsuccessful and the former Parliaments term already expired, Prval is now governing with only a small legislature composed of only a third of the upper house, which is dominated by Prvals allies. Although the president claims honest intentions with hopes of bringing peace and stability to the nation by helping to coordinate ongoing relief efforts, Haiti now faces an enormously uncertain and time. With such an accumulation of political power, the president can now govern by almost decree alone. Even Prval himself acknowledges the dangerous concentration of political power that now looms over the already crippled nation. He has already insisted that he will leave when his term ends in February, unless complications call for Prval to remain in charge. During such an unstable and vulnerable period, it is now vital that every nation, most importantly Haiti, contributes to establishing political elections as early as possible. In order for Haiti to get back on its feet, an established and structured government would effectively redistribute and organize Haitis own resources and manpower. Evidently, elections are imperative for preventing Haitis political environment from mirroring the nations physical and economical discourse. It is inexcusable, especially with foreign aid, that the Haiti government would anticipate polling to be impossible. If elections can be held in Iraq, amid war, terrorism, poverty, crime, and ethnic feuds, elections can be held in Haiti. Although the task of polling a devastated population with hundreds of thousands deceased may seem impossible; steps must be made, otherwise, Haiti may never recover. Despite the fact that Prvals anticipation for the need of a term extension may seem reckless, it is vastly overshadowed by Haitis basic need for stable and structured government that can only come from fair elections. It is not only inexcusable for a nation to deprive its citizens the right of self-government, but also impossible for Haiti to improve without a strong political foundation. Haiti needs elections more than anything else; the failure to hold them soon would cause political relapse.

well students perform in each teachers classroom which does not reflect how well teachers are able to teach their students. This

becomes counterproductive; since poor statistics will result from teaching students with a low grade point average, teachers will be discouraged from helping troubled students. Aceves realizes the unfair pressure that would be put on teachers if these reports became mandatory. His campaign focuses on better education by means of sufficient funding for educational programs. Aceves has experience as superintendent in smaller school districts, which gives him a better understanding of the classroom. With this, he realizes it is unfair to penalize teachers who take on challenging students. Romero is rashly trying to fix a system that already works

A Call For Justice

Pamela Lewes Contributing Staff Writer While a president only serves his country for four years, a justice serves for a lifetime. Therefore, it is imperative that President Barack Obama appoints an experienced and competent Supreme Court Justice who will positively impact the nation for decades to come. Federal judges Merrick Garland, Sidney Thomas, and Diane Wood, as well as Solicitor General Elena Kagan, have been the leading candidates in succeeding John Paul Stevens, the retiring Supreme Court Justice. Kagan has been Obamas top nominee for the position; however, she will not be able to effectively carry out the demanding position of Supreme Court Justice. Her lack of courtroom experience and unsubstantial record of

legal writings clearly illustrate that she will not be able to carry on Stevenss legacy as a respectable Justice. Though Kagan may have many cards to put on the table, such as a consensus-building leadership, she is completely unsuited for the job. Kagans knowledge and experience in court are severely limited; she has never argued a case at trial nor has she debated in front of the Supreme High Court. Therefore, if Kagan is confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first justice in nearly 40 years to have possessed no prior experience as a judge. Although Kagan shows an impressive resum, including her role as the first female dean of Harvard Law School, her weak paper background dealing with legal proceedings may also show her inability to serve effectively

as a Supreme Court Justice, due to her lack of knowledge. The other three candidates are all currently federal appeals court judges, and therefore have a more significant amount of experience in the courtroom than Kagan. Kagans background also brings into question gray areas of criticism. While Obama describes Kagan as someone who is openminded and fair, Kagans history says something different. During her deanship at Harvard Law School, Kagan supported a lawsuit intended to ban military recruits who forbid homosexuals on campus from openly serving in the military. In addition, civil rights groups are concerned with Kagan taking on such a high position because she is extremely defensive of those in executive power. They are worried that she may

look the other way in a trial in which the White House is involved. If Kagan is confirmed, she would only increase the chances of provoking many confrontations with people who will insist that Kagans biased opinions prevented them from getting a fair trial from a just, accomplished judge. President Obama must be extremely cautious in choosing the best justice for the highest, most respected court in the United States. Without a dedicated and skilled leader, Americas justice system will lose its respectability and be subject, instead, to mockery and criticism. Kagan is not yet wellqualified enough to hold such an honorable position and needs to defend her name with more legal evidence before she is given the opportunity to take on such enormous responsibility.

By forcing women recent approval of two new to perform an ultrasound, abortion laws has sparked a legislators are reinstating the controversy between those who idea of thinking twice before support abortion and those who acting. oppose it. One of these laws allows women to reevaluate their initial decision to abort a child after receiving adequate information regarding the abortion process, and a detailed description of the fetus. These laws are necessary and beneficial because they give women the chance to carefully decide whether or not an abortion is the right choice for them. Through the abortion laws, women will have the benefit of being completely informed before making a decision. The decision of abortion is often made by minors or young adults who lack maturity, experience, and information regarding the severity and consequences of The Oklahoma Abortion abortion. Though this may Priya Patel Staff Writer seem a bit harsh, it is nothing short of reality. Every woman should keep this reality in mind while deciding on an abortion. After an abortion, the woman carrying the child may suffer psychological distress, such as internal conflicts and external stress, as well has health risks from the experience. By giving women the entire description of a fetus before the abortion, women will be able to make a decision that they will be grateful for in the long-run. Not only will the Oklahoma Abortion Laws benefit unborn babies, they will benefit doctors as well. Doctors will be able to decide whether or not to let the women know if the fetus shows signs of abnormalities or disease. This encourages all patients to be fair and unprejudiced. Dan Sullivan, the author of the bill, created a great way to improve the aspects of abortion. His plan is full of forethought, as it compels women to view the damage that they are going to cause by proceeding with their abortion. The plan serves as a learning experience to all citizens and encourages them to think twice before they act.

Con: Oklahoma Abortion Laws

The first of the two recently passed laws forces doctors to conduct an ultrasound at least one hour before a woman has an abortion. During the ultrasound, the doctor is not only required to describe the fetuss heartbeat, organs and lungs, but the woman is also required to listen to the doctor, regardless of special medical conditions or rape. The second law grants doctors the right to withhold information about certain medical conditions or defects from the mother without any ramification or dangers of a lawsuit. It is apprehensible that both these bills do more than just cross the line of civil decency and privacy; also intruding upon a patients it makes medical procedures so privacy in her relationship with politically saturated that their her doctor. However, this is not always the case; a woman may feel she needs to seek an abortion in cases of incest, rape, an unhealthy fetus, fatal childbirth, or very personal moral reasons and these legislations punish women victimized by these contingencies. With countless alternatives, these legislations seem intent on punishing women facing difficult circumstances. Oklahoma legislature could have sought, such as prior education in schools, better pregnancy prevention, and improved parental consent. Additionally, the legal protection doctors have when withholding information is ridiculous. The abortion legislations put women in the most difficult circumstances possible. The Oklahoma legislatures ignorance for womens exclusive rights and the lack of respect in the practice of medicine is appalling. Lawmakers must realize that the moral standing behind abortions should be left to the women seeking them, not by the government. This legislation is not only a prime example of unconstitutionally intrusive politics, but a definite invasion on womens rights.

The decision of abortion is often made by minors or young adults who lack maturity, experience and information regarding the severity of the consequences of abortion.

These legislations automatically assume that women who get abortions are unaware, uninformed, and view abortions as merely an alternative to birth control, but this is not always the case.

A Very Unhappy Meal

Ashley Ahn Feature Editor April 28, 2010 marked a sad day in Santa Clara County, California. It was the day that the banning of McDonalds Happy Meal toys was publically announced. The wonderful toys come in small boxes of joy that are defenseless against the cruel Santa Clara County counsel. Something about the fried bits of mysterious chicken or the indigestible burger meat going down the stomachs of young children does not appeal to the counsel. Taking out the toys in these meals would be a punishment to the children for eating as healthy as the commercials say they are. Sadly, for McDonalds, without the toys, the meals die, and without the meals, the children will die. Therefore, we must hold close to our hearts, the thing that counts the most to us and our great nation: the toys. With about 2.5 million Happy Meals sold annually, there is no doubt that sale numbers will decrease if the toys are taken out. The toys are the sole reason for children to even consider trying a McDonalds meal in the first place. Only after admiring their shiny beacon of joy do children take a bite out of the food; and with one bite, the children are blessed for life.

Blazing Trails of Satire

and realize that they hold the future for our children. Hero to Happy Meal lovers everywhere, County Supervisor Donald Gage, is the man who is rationally voting against the horrible measure of toys being banned from the Happy Meals. He brings up the point of parents making g o o d choices for their kids. T h e choice to have a slab of formerly frozen m e a t whipped between t w o prosthetic pieces of bread with an easily breakable, plastic toy as the perfect cherry on top of a greasy meal is parents real heaven. There is absolutely no competition. No healthier choice exists on the face of earth. Does it matter that Gage is an overweight man fighting for these high caloric meals? Of course not! He is a saint to all in this epic battle for good. The Santa Clara County counsel makes the desire for high-caloric meals sound like a disease. These meals, however, only contain greasy, oily food that can clog kids arteries and leave them with fatal heart problems for the rest of their lives. People seem to think that excess amounts of fat on the body are some sort of bad omen! This however, is simply a widespread misconception. Children need these extra calories in order to carry out their daily activities. Without the energy majestically provided by the Happy Meals, children will not be able to efficiently sit on the couch and play video games all day. Without this source of exercise, children will not be able to live long and healthy lives. It looks like McDonalds is the only one that truly cares for the childrens well being and health. Children would simply not be able to function properly without their daily Happy Meals. With that said, the Happy Meals would not exist without the toys. The only way to ensure the survival of our race is to preserve the Happy Meal toys. If the counsel does manage to get rid of these cute, tiny little toys in order to fight a silly little obesity problem, the sacred Happy Meal will most definitely become a very Unhappy Meal. McDonalds is quite possibly the most deserving restaurant today. After all, it is not BURGER KING and Wendys that have the cute little toys, it is McDonalds only. The company should be applauded for their attempts to bring joy to children with the Happy Meal toys.

Ashley Ahn Feature Editor Lea Chang Asst. Feature Editor Desiree Wang Former Editor-in-Chief Former Feature Editor There are times when words run dry. Words are rendered useless, not because high school did not mean anything, but because you cannot possibly, in human terms, begin to describe the four perhaps most pivotal years of your life thus far but I suppose its worth a shot: Sometimes it seems as though high school has sucked me dry. Like a bloodthirsty mosquito, high school has punctured a hole in me and consequently sucked out not only my lifes blood, so that I function like a monotonous drone, but also has drained my faith in humanity and my desire to learn, yearn, and dream. But then again, thats only sometimes. I have been in such a constant rush these past four years to get out and go, that in retrospect there are a ton of things I feel I missed out on. I spent the majority of my high school career just waiting for it to be over, and in the process of speeding towards the nish line, I must say that I missed many opportunities to stop and smell the roses. If given the chance to ask my freshman 14 year-old self where it was that I was in such a rush to go, the answer would be a shrug and perhaps two rolling eyes. In my mind, I did not belong in a place that, I thought, lacked humanity. Paradoxically, of course, by thinking that, I ceased to cultivate the very thing that denes my humanityfaith, hope, and everything that is innately good inside. Now in my final days of high school, I know that I should have pressed the brakes to my speeding tires long ago, but as they say, better late than never. I was wrong to judge Diamond Bar High School so prematurely and can honestly say that I am anything but sorry for these years. Despite the regrets, I would never redo a single moment, because with each clumsy face-splattering fall, I took one step closer to the realization that our oddly colored school is actually a diamond in the rough. To The Bulls Eye staff, it has been incredible. Ill never forget those friendships. I enjoyed every moment of my tenure and I have the utmost faith in you. Its a funny thing, high school; you enter thinking that in your four years youre going to miraculously transform into the woman that you were meant to be by the time you graduate. Incidentally, its okay to not have everything gured outIm not on my deathbed, for crying out loud. What I do know, however, is that I want to live for each day, constantly learning and growing. And hopefully maybe, just maybe, I will one day become that person I was meant to be. I suppose for me, life will always be some sort of version of high school; with every misstep and fall comes change and growth. So, does it really end here? No, I guess not. Ranging from cinnamon-covered churros to those massive caloric turkey legs, Disneyland offers visitors a wide variety of tastes. Our picks are sure to please anyones palate. Thick clam chowder in sourdough bowls can be found in restaurants like Caf Orleans, French Market, and Royal Street Veranda, all of which are in New Orleans Square. Turkey legs are always a Disneyland favorite. Carts selling them can usually be found in the central plaza or in Frontierland, near Big Thunder Mountain. (Disney sells about 1.5 million turkey legs every year. Each turkey leg has 1,092 calories and two days worth of sodium.)

The rst restaurant that probably comes to mind when thinking of pizza in Disneyland is Redd Rocketts Pizza Port. Located next to Space Mountain in Tomorrowland, this pizza parlor offers generous slices and whole pies of pizza.

Churro carts can be found almost anywhere in the park, due to popular demand. Despite the relatively expensive price tag of $3.50 a churro, it maintains a group of devoted customers.

Disneyland offers their legendary corn dogs at a little stand down Main Street, next to the Plaza Inn. But beware, long lines often wrap around the Inn.

On a hot summer day, ice cream is a denite must. Stands selling cold drinks and frozen treats can be found throughout the park. There are some of these carts on Main Street and near the Tiki Room in Adventureland. These confections are also available at the Main Street Cone Shop and the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Shop, which is also on Main Street.

FINALLY DONE Pop Up and Shop

Colene Eng Staff Writer Ahhhere comes that dreadful time again: nals. Every year, students are forced to take these horrible tests that can make or break their grade. However, to help you survive, here are a few tips that will hopefully make this week easier: 1. Eat healthy: Grab enough healthy food (i.e. tea, bananas, etc.) to eat at your study place so it saves you from trips walking back and forth to the kitchen. 2. Relax: Remember that nals are not your whole life. The world will not stop revolving just because you did not do so well on that one test. 3. Do not procrastinate: Finals week will be much easier if you start reviewing the material at least one week prior to the exam. It will give you time to focus on the topics you need to study more. 4. Get enough sleep: However obvious this may seem, it is incredible how many people forget this one easy tip. Although nals may cause some people to lose sleep, if you plan your time efciently, you should be able to snag the recommended eight hours a night 5. Music time: Classical music is proven to stimulate brain waves, which can help you retain information needed to ace these exams. If you are not a big fan of Mozart or Beethoven, try something with a bit more edge like Yiruma. However, if you know music will be a distraction, refrain from switching on that iPod! 6. Get over it: Once you put that pencil down at the end of the exam, do not stress anymore. Move on to the next one, or focus on other upcoming activities. As long as you tried your b e s t , there is nothing e l s e you can do. This will save you unnecessary nerves. 7. Treat yourself: There is nothing like a good old brownie or chocolate bar to help motivate you. The higher your percentage, the bigger your reward. Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes on the computer, or maybe splurge on that new pair of shoes you have been eyeing. No matter what tips you use to study for your nals, remember that your score is nothing but a number. Just prepare well, try your best, and make the most of it. And if it does not work out this year, there is always next year. Holly Liu Staff Writer Now you see it, now you dont! That is exactly how popup stores present themselves today. These specific stores never stay in a certain place for a long time since their rent is short-termed. After attracting enough attention, they close up and move to a different area, leaving their shoppers wanting more. Not only do smaller businesses do this, but so do well-known corporations. Toys R Us Incorporated, Target Corporation, Gap and J.C. Penny Company are at it as well! These stores usually promote vintage or new items that may or may not be seasonbased. Small companies do this because of profitable income and increased population. Due to the unstable economy, renting a spot temporarily and selling as many items as one can proves to be a lot cheaper than actually creating a permanent store. This method is also effective in creating commotion about a stores products so once the store moves, its shoppers can only chase. Pop-up stores are not actually a new concept. They have been around since 2000 or maybe even earlier, but they have recently become a hot trend. Not only is doing this profitable but it has become a development that shoppers obsess over. Shoppers now have a new challenge to face; they must nd these fashionable stores in order to get their hands on what they want. The stores usually appear during convenient seasons, such as summer or fall. This way, they can quickly sell their items before they are no longer in style. The stores then can have a new inventory for the upcoming period. This development of popup stores proves to be very innovative. In a way, one takes something already created and modies it to become something different and new. Though it is hard to understand the concept at rst, the benets it provides for shoppers and owners become very apparent. Pop-up stores give shoppers something fresh to look for instead of the normal chain stores that they see everywhere. It is a completely new and interesting experience every single time shoppers nd one of these rare stores. As for the store owners, they have a fresh area to work with. They are never tied down to a specic location and can sell a wide variety of products. So keep a keen eye out for these stores, because you never know where they will pop up next!

There will be a GAP in time...before you see this store again.

When the country co-hosted the World Cup with Japan in 2002, it advanced all the way to the semifinals, beating several powerhouse teams such as Italy and Spain along the way. With experienced players like captain Park Ji-Sung and Lee Chong Yong, both of whom play in the highly competitive English Premier League, the Taeguk Warriors are sure to upset other strong teams this World Cup. In the long history of the FIFA World Cup, the host nation has never failed to make it to the Round of 16. If South Africa follows suit, it should move on to the second round of the tournament. However, South Africa should not expect an easy journey into the next round. In its group, South Africa has France, Mexico, and Uruguay, all of which are very strong teams. Many exciting games should result from the high amount of skill in this years teams. As always, there are teams with greater expectations, but there is no telling which team will eventually prevail as the champion of the world.

Pak-ing Up
Megan Quiamas Asst. Sports Editor From playing Little League to playing at Diamond Bar High, senior Chester Pak is now getting ready for the next level: college baseball. Pak received a partial athletic scholarship to the California State University, Northridge. M o s t students have seen him on his self-titled Stampede segment, Interviews with CPak but he is most wellknown for his talent on the diamond. Pak has been playing baseball since his childhood, and, through baseball, he has learned patience and discipline. He has been playing baseball with the Brahmas all four years, three years in varsity. Now he is moving up from Diamond Bar to CalState Northridge, a Division One school. My teammates are like my brothers. We experienced so much together. We have been

on the field everyday and had a good time. It was a good run, commented Pak. Im anxious to be [at Northridge, but] I am ready to move forward and gain more experience. Pak also got offers from Lincoln Memorial University and the University of Virginia, but Pak believes that he made the best choice by picking Northridge, which plays in the Big West Conference. Im more comfortable going to a CalState, stated Pak. Im looking forward to the traveling, meeting my new team, meeting new people, and just the new competition. Throughout Paks baseball career, he has always been mentally ready, and he never goes off track. His family is excited and happy for him. All the hard work and practice have finally paid off. I am honored to receive a scholarship. It turns my future. I am ready for the next level, and a new lifestyle, commented Pak.

Athlete of the Month: Melissa Wilson

A Cold Day in LA
Rachel Halpert Asst. Sports Editor Most people would agree on how disappointing and almost excruciating it is to watch the Angels these days. Now two months into this season, the Los Angeles Angels are already in third place behind Oakland and Texas in the American League Western Division, with Seattle one game behind. The Angels are currently 20-24 (.455), and seven games out of first place as of May 21. Even though it might seem like they are playing poorly, this season has been very similar to most Angel season starts. The 2002 season, which led to the franchises first World Series Championship, began with a 12-14 record (.462) as of May 1, 2002. However, unlike the past, the Angels have yet to find the fuel that generally keeps them going into post-season play. This year, the blame has been put mostly on the overall inconsistent pitching. It seems as though Jared Weaver is the only starting pitcher who can get the job done. The others in the five-man rotation all have weak records and unimpressive earned run averages. Unsurprisingly, the Angels have the second worst ERA in the AL. And to briefly sum up the bullpen, the $9 million closer, Brian Fuentes, receives criticism for giving up runs in the last outs of the game on a regular basis. As for the offense, former Angel Vladimir Guerrero might have possibly taken the power with him to Texas. First baseman Kendry Morales is leading the team in homeruns with merely nine for the season so far. Centerfielder Torii Hunter follows him with seven homeruns. Third baseman, Brandon Wood, is clearly the most disappointing of all, often unable to come through for the team when he needs to. Lastly, leadoff hitter Eric Aybar still has a ways to go to replace the dependable Chone Figgins. Only time will tell if the Angels can make their infamous comeback by the All-Star break, which will be held this year at Angel Stadium in Anaheim beginning July 13. Megan Quiamas Asst. Sports Editor Sluggish, weak, and underachieving are some of the adjectives that can be used to describe the Dodgers at the start of this season. The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently in second place in the Western Division of the National League. As of May 21, the Los Angeles Angels are in third place in the American League, but the Dodgers can boast a 24-18 (.571) record while the Angels are at a meager 20-24 (.455). The Dodgers are doing a subpar job this season, but all they have to do is put the pieces back together. A couple of names people hear all season are Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp. In just the beginning of the season, Ethier already has two walk-off hits. One was the walk-off grand slam homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 6. In the 2009 season, the Dodgers strength was their pitching but now it is their weakness. Last year they had the best bullpen in the Majors with a 3.30 earned run average. George Sherrill, the All-Star closer they acquired last year from the Baltimore Orioles, has struggled all year. Jonathan Broxton is probably the Dodgers strongest arm out of the bullpen. Ramon Troncoso, last years most dependent reliever, has been having trouble every now and then. Ronald Belisario returned to the bullpen after missing the first five weeks; hopefully his return will reinforce the bullpen. Aside from the bullpen, another problem is their pitching rotation. Their pitchers start off strong but, by about the fifth inning, they are giving up runs that cause the Dodgers to lose. The Dodgers do not really have a main pitcher, but for now, Clayton Kershaw is their ace. He pitched eight scoreless innings against the Colorado Rockies on May 20. The Dodgers have been doing really well by scoring more runs and improving their pitching.

When asked what kind of person senior Melissa Wilson is, her teammates can only smile. According to Wilson, the captain of the swim team needs to be a leader, responsible, respectful, and social, and she meets that criteria. Wilson has been swimming since the age of two, and she began to compete at age seven. She has kept swimming throughout all these years because of her steadfast nature. At meets, W i l s o n competes in the 100 meter backstroke, with a personal record of 1:11:04. The years of dedication and hard work have developed Wilson into the athlete she is now. [I enjoy] it because it is good exercise and we get to meet a lot of new people, commented Wilson. The sport has been a very big part of her life and it has also taught her many values. Swimming has taught me to be more social and supportive, said Wilson. At meets, Wilson leads events, stays in charge, and cheers for her teammates. She is always proud in everything that the team does. Her dedication to her team has given her the respect of her teammates. They see her as a good friend but

also as a great leader. Her team trusts her and knows that she only wants the best for them. She gives her team necessary criticism so that they can reach their full potential. Even though she is the swim captain, Wilson still manages to have a 4.0 grade point average this year. Her favorite class is Integrated Science with Nicole Cabase. She manages her time well for her classes and swimming so that she does well in both. She does not let them interfere with each other, but they are both her top priorities. Wilson also dances for her studio, the Fine Arts Academy of Dance. She has also been part of the dance team at Diamond Bar High School. When she is not dancing, swimming, or studying, she spends time with her friends and also makes crafts. In regards to her future, Wilson will attend Concordia University, Irvine. She wants to major in Lutheran teaching and minor in history. Unfortunately, she does not plan to continue swimming in college because she wants to focus on her studies. Wilson has received the love and credibility of her fellow peers and athletes. She is said to have a vibe and to create a charismatic atmosphere that make her a fun person to spend time with. Her good personality and her solid GPA make her the ideal student athlete of Diamond Bar High School.
