Diamond Bar Recieves a Grant to Enhance Trail System

Out of 300 applicants that appealed for grants only Diamond Bar, along with 43 other cities, was awarded. The city was required to restrict funds to nature education. Lea Chang Feature Editor City of Diamond Bar officials revealed that the city received a grant from the State of California's Natural Resources Agency to better its own nature program on Tuesday, April 19. Out of the 300 applicants that appealed for grants in the summer of 2010, only Diamond Bar, along with 43 other cities, was awarded with the money. To be eligible to obtain a grant from the Agencys Nature Education Facilities Program, the city was required to restrict funds solely to the furthering of nature education. A total sum of $61,063, given to Diamond Bar, will go towards Sycamore Canyon Trail enhancement efforts, which include the construction of benches and the addition of trash cans. Also, exhibits and descriptions of plant and animal life along the trails will be included as an additional educational aspect. Construction on the trail is expected to begin in the winter of 2011 and completed in the spring of 2012. The city will continue to seek opportunities to enhance its parks and trails throughout the year.

Starting July 1, 2011, a new law (AB 354) changing California immunization requirements for all students entering 7th-12th grade goes into effect. The law requires that this coming school year (2011-2012), all students will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot called Tdap. Make an appointment today to get the booster. Turn in proof of immunization to your school. Uninsured or underinsured students may qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program; call 1-877-243-8832. You can also see what immunizations the school has on file for you on parent portal. Check your immunization records to see if the school has all doses on file that have been given. AB 354 requires students to obtain the vaccine or complete the permanent medical exemption with a MD note or persional beliefs exemption prior to July 1, 2011. Any student who does not have proof of getting the booster or have an exemption will not be allowed to start school until they give proof of one or the other to their school. DBHS Places in Vans Contest

DESIGN: The 50 semifinalists, including DBHS, competed in a public online voting stage from April 26 to May 2. The general public was able to view and cast votes on their favorite design. Justin Park Asst. Editorial Editor Diamond Bar High School was a semifinalist in the second annual shoe designing competition which was hosted by American manufacturer of original surf and skate brand, Vans, on Tuesday, April 26. However, DBHS was not able to advance to the next stage as one of the finalists. Various students of Jon Haprov's graphic arts class submitted their original shoe artworks in the Vans Custom Culture sneaker customization design contest for a chance to win the Finalist Prize. Finalists received an all-expense-paid trip to New York City where they would exhibit their designed artworks. The grand prize, which is awarded to one final winner selected from five finalists, consists of a $50,000 donation toward the art program at the respective school and an opportunity to sell personalized footwear in retail stores starting in 2012. It was like Christmas in July. It was great to see the students achieve this, said Haprov. Of approximately 400 nationwide school entrants, the competitors were narrowed down to 50 semifinalists from five different regions consisting of California, Northeast, Northwest, and Southeast. DBHS was selected among the ten candidates for the California region. The 50 semifinalists, including DBHS, competed in a public online voting stage from April 26 to May 2. The general public was able to view and cast votes on their favorite design in each region during the phase. Dos Pueblos High School located in Goleta, the school with the most votes in California region, became the finalist of the California region. The [contest] was really time consuming, but the hard work paid off. I was happy to be able to express myself, commented senior Summer Canova, a participant in the competition. The five finalists chosen from each respective region, consisting of DPHS in Goleta, Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, Washington, Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York, and Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, will compete against each other for the Grand Prize. A judging panel of various industry mavens will analyze and select one winning school in New York City on June 2. This annual shoe contest was created in 2010 when Vans Sales Representative Shawn Gruenhagen and art teacher Franky Scaglione were looking for ways to promote self-expression in high school students. "Supporting creativity is central to Vans' culture," stated Vans' Vice President of Marketing Doug Palladini in the official Vans press release. He added, "this platform [also] helps us call attention to the dwindling funding for arts education in this country in an impactful way."

Lowering Bear Quota

Claire Huang Asst. A & E Editor The California Fish and Game Commission has recently proposed to increase the quota of bears allowed to be hunted annually by 300 bears, raising the already sufcient maximum of 1,700 bears per season. The hunting season lasts roughly from October to December, and throughout these three months, bear hunters are required to have an identification tag to kill one bear. These suggested changes will help keep a heavy surveillance over the bear population to keep the quota in check, but these precautions are constantly questioned with unreasonable suggestions to increase the bear hunting quota. The upcoming spring season marks the third consecutive year that the commission has proposed to expand bear hunting in California. Killing more bears in California will endanger both the environment and the bear population. This unnecessary increase will not only upset many Californians by the inhumanity of the commissions actions, but it will also pose a threat on the rest of the environment. Commissioner Michael Sutton admitted to the Los Angeles Times that 99 percent of Californians disagree with the commission and do not want this proposal to be passed. In addition to this, the Humane Society of the United States rejected the proposition and 21 Californian legislators encouraged the commission to abandon the proposal. The HMUS and California legislators are right to do so, being that the commissions actions are harmful and unnecessary. Countless disagreements have risen from animal welfare and environmental groups concerning the opposition of the idea. These arguments have not changed over the last three years for good reason, yet the commission still does not hesitate to suggest the expansion of bear hunting. This request for an increase will only satisfy a small portion of Californians. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported that hikers and explorers outnumber bear hunters in a ratio of more than 20 to one. Only one percent of Californians takes up bear hunting as a sport; with this increase in the bear quota, a minute percentage of about 0.008 of the bear hunting community will be satised with one more kill, but 300 more bears will have lost their lives and a new threat to the bear population will be created. The commission stated that it is necessary for more bears to be hunted due to the growing population of this species. Although the bear population is gradually increasing, the commission must keep in mind that many bear habitats in California are changing due to constant environmental dangers and that every decision will greatly impact the future of Californias bear population. The gradual expansion of bear hunting can eventually lead to a larger quota for bear hunters, numbers large enough to place a negative impact on the bear population. The actions of humans have endangered numerous species and subsequently caused extinction. For example, in 1922 the last grizzly bear in California was shot; this scenario does not seem implausible considering that the grizzly bear became extinct in California due to excessive hunting. By agreeing to this proposal, the bear population in California will show a dramatic decrease as more bears will be killed annually. This raised quota would allow the number of future propositions regarding the expansion of bear hunting to increase as well. The CFGC should consider the drastic effects that raising this quota will have on the environment, so that their actions will not lead to extinction of an entire population.

Genetic Kit Testing

Colene Eng Asst. Editorial Editor A new scientic breakthrough produced by companies such as Pathway Genomics have released a home genetic test that allows people to test their DNA by swabbing the inside of their mouth and sending the saliva sample to a genealogy rm. By doing so, people will be able to have more knowledge regarding their likelihood of developing a specic kind of hereditary disease. However, this process is unreliable, and will ultimately prove to be dangerous. Although this kit represents undeniable progress made by scientists, the practicality and reliability needed to make it efcient is lacking. These new at-home kits pose too many inexcusable risks for it to be useful for the consumers. Reputable national health organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration have issued warnings to consumers looking to purchase this new innovation. Both claim that genetic tests are too complicated to be done in the privacy of the buyers own home and recommend that genetic tests should be done only with the advice of a doctor and in a lab setting. In the presence of a doctor, results can be veried and different options can be discussed immediately. With the kit, the users would have to wait until their sample is analyzed. Only then would they be able to make an appointment with a doctor to discuss their options. The FDA, which is the regulatory a g e n c y responsible for reviewing genetic tests, has approved only 12 of the 1,000 genetic test kits currently available. Of those dozen, none of them are the athome version, but rather tests performed in clinical laboratories with higher quality testing services. In order to help prevent this defective product from being used, organizations like the FDA should reject the product from being sold entirely. This product also runs a high risk of false results, which is inexcusable in the medical eld. If consumers are given an incorrect result, there are sure to be a number of negative consequences. For example, if the tester receives a result that claims he or she is prone to an incurable disease, it is very likely that the affected customer will fall into depression. Although some of the results may provide an accurate warning, the chance that the kits produce false readings make it a product too dangerous to sell over the counter. The companies who put these kits on the market are responsible for the wellbeing of its customers and if the results are not completely legitimate, the corporation will be putting itself in a position where it will lose its customers trust. A recent report issued by Senate Special Committee on Aging stated that these tests can be unreliable, misleading, and overly vague. Consumers will also have to pay an upward total of over $3,000 for the kits which provide obvious recommendations and advice. For example, If you smoke, quit. In addition, the reports claim that genetic testing experts say relationships between gene mutations and most diseases are unproven. Certied doctors are a better alternative to these often unreliable kits that solicit a product capable of producing thousands of false diagnoses. Good health is a complex and fragile necessity in life; there is no room for any chance of faulty diagnoses. Most manufacturers of these kits make claims that are not supported with valid evidence, maintaining that a person can protect against serious disease by choosing special foods and nutritional supplements. The results then propose a customized diet, including certain vitamins and cuisines. However, the FDA and CDC say they know of no valid scientic research or studies showing that genetic tests can be used safely to recommend nutritional choices. This new genetic testing is creating an immeasurable number of downsides to this product. The kit should not be made available for purchase until it is further advanced. In the future, when the technology further develops, take-home sets may be effective and useful, but as for now, interested buyers should be very cautious before purchasing such an unreliable product.

This process is unreliable, and will ultimately prove to be dangerous.

I dont think its a good thing that girls do crash dieting [...] because its unhealthy and [...] if a girl feels uncomfortable with the way she looks, [it] doesnt mean she has to change herself. Taylor Yada, Sophomore Its cute that they try so hard to impress everyone, but its unhealthy. There are better ways to try to impress dates. Jack Zhai, Senior

Its good because the girls look good for a special event, but its also bad because crash dieting isnt healthy. Joseph Harrison, Junior

Eye of the Editors

Every year during May, countless high school girls and even several boys can be seen obsessing over hairstyles, dresses and suits, makeup, and most of all, weight. They are all planning for one of the biggest school events of the entire yearProm. Some students solemnly s w e a r t h e m s e l v e s o ff o f carbohydrates, sugar, and all kinds of fattening foods until the day after Prom, while others simply exercise until they drop those extra two, ve, or even fteen pounds needed to squeeze themselves into the typical skin-tight dress or form-tting tuxedo. Whatever the extreme method for the rapid weight loss, most students regret their ridiculous and potentially dangerous and threatening crash diets after Prom is over and forgotten. These weight-loss schemes are seemingly harmless, but the grave risk that crash diets pose is not worth the serious aftereffects. Whether it is for Prom or for a new summer body, sudden weight loss is nothing short of unhealthy. Nearly 90 percent of all crash dieters put all the weight they lost back on shortly after they stop their diets. In some cases, extra pounds are gained because of the dieters bodys inability to adjust to the abrupt change in nutrition intake. Extreme dieting can often lead to skin problems, including acne and rashes, which obviously completely shatters a typical teenagers optimal look for Prom night and couple pictures. Excessive dieting can also cause headaches, constipation, eventual extreme eating disorders such as anorexia, and even the occasional blackout. In their attempts to look their absolute best, many boys and girls ironically end up negatively affecting their physical appearances. High school students should never be putting their health at risk for the sake of one rather insignificant night. Not only is crash dieting untimely, but it also very inconvenient as Prom week collides with AP testing. The change in diet and lack of usual nutrients will strongly impact test scores. Students tend to feel groggy and are often unable to focus when they have not eaten properly before a test. They will ultimately benet more from reorganizing their priorities and realizing that an AP test far outweighs looking exceptional for Prom night. Some high school students will go to extreme lengths in their attempts to impress their peers and dates and to make Prom the perfect night. Oftentimes, they succeed in single-handedly making their own situations worse by doing so. Crash dieting can be dangerous, and is denitely not a sensible option for obtaining the ideal Prom body. Pre-Prom diets are simply unreasonable, and can even pose a threat to ones health. High school students need to nally understand that one school dance does not make or break their high school experiences. Overdoing a diet for Prom will only bring them grief and a bad high school memory, while establishing a healthy lifestyle will be benecial.

I dont think they should [crash diet] because its unhealthy and people should be proud of who they are and not try to be something theyre not for one night. Kassi Keys, Senior Every girl is beautiful in her own way and they should be happy with what body they were given. Ashley Nakaishi, Freshman

Countries Abandon NK Pro: Osama Bin Laden Assasination

Hanna Yi Asst. Feature Theme Editor The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea experienced a harsh winter that resulted in severe food shortages that affected the citizens greatly. According to the United Nations World Food Programme, without more international help, six million people in North Korea may be at serious risk of malnutrition or starvation. The generosity of donor countries has withered and diminished over the last decade in response to Chairman Kim Jong-Ils unreasonable connement. Rather than being discouraged by Kim Jong-Ils poor national relations, donor countries should be giving aid in order to help the six million lives at risk. The intense winter, severe ooding, and foot-and-mouth disease shook DPRK to its core. FMD is a caustic viral disease of cattle and swine. Most animals recover, but the disease leaves them weakened. With the FMD, the people of North Korea will have less milk and meat, which will affect their growth. Adding on to the crisis, the rise of food prices makes importing goods harder and more costly. Kim Jong-Il needs to reestablish a strong relationship between North Korea and the donor countries like China, so that the citizens can thrive again. The United States food aid was renounced two years ago after North Korea disconnected all ties with the alleviating rations, yet the North Korean government is not being held accountable for the food shortages. The governments devastating economic policies are fatal to the people of North Korea. According to the WFP, government rations are at an all-time low, currently supplying no more than half of peoples daily nutritional daily needs. While malnutrition rates among children have decreased over the last decade, one in every three children remains constantly stunted, meaning that they are too short for their age. Many people detest Chairman Kim Jong-Il, however neighboring countries have seen the nation in distress, so they decided to donate food to North Korea. This is the type of effort that needs to be seen today so that the malnourishment can be minimized once again. The U.S. announced plans to distribute emergency food aid. The WFP said that the 3.5 million people in North Korea who were suffering from malnutrition would be fed. The purpose of the mission is to examine the ways food security in North Korea changed since the Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission, which assesses emergencies related to agricultural production or overall food availability problems, took place in September 2010. If Kim Jong-Il continues to ignore the needs of the people, they will disintegrate and the government will be thrown into chaos. No matter how anyone looks at this situation, it will inevitably lead to this result. Cutting food supplies will lead to the death of millions of innocent people. Instead of having people suffer because of one person, neighboring countries should reconsider food aid in North Korea to save the citizens. Justin Park Asst. nd him signicantly outweighs the value of bin Ladens death. Bin Laden was unarmed during the invasion and therefore could not have attacked. The United States should not have killed Osama when capturing him was a feasible option. Overpowering him and bringing him back for trial was possible, and, if carried out, it would have been more benecial. His death does not solve the problems created by his radical ideas but by capturing and interrogating him, the U.S. could obtain a lot of critical information. The U.S. war efforts have cost over three billion dollars and ten years of military presence, yet the only accomplishment has been bin Ladens death. His death may provide comfort for family and friends of victims to the terror attacks directed by bin Laden, but it does not solve the denitive problem that the U.S. currently facesthe dismantling of Al Qaeda and similar terrorist groups. The U.S. is currently at a standstill in the two wars that have been started over the search of bin Laden and many lives are continuously being lost. The U.S. entered the Middle East to ght the reign of terror brought about by attacks led by bin Laden, but his death did not end the wars. By bringing him to the U.S., the government could have obtained information and locations of other mostwanted Muslim extremists. Bin Ladens death will also result in retaliations against the U.S. by his followers. The U.S. has already found extensive plans, which target the country. Despite the success of the U.S. on their mission, those who oppose the slaughter of bin Laden assert that capturing him alive would have been a more prudent option. Over the past decade, the U.S. government invested over a trillion dollars in various military attempts to capture bin Laden alive. None of the attempts were successful, and each failed attempt drew America farther from succeeding. However President Barack Obama was intelligent enough to comprehend the level of difculty in arresting bin Laden alive. He refused to take any more risks by authorizing the assassination. Obamas sensible decision ultimately prevented the U.S. from losing yet another chance of stopping bin Laden from further expanding his terrorism. The iconic terrorist behind Americas fear has nally been put to rest. Americas killing of bin Laden was not an action of cruelty and imprudence. Rather, it was a justied and satisfactory endeavor to serve long-overdue justice for its citizens.

Holly Liu Asst. News Editor For ten years, the United States government has tried to locate Osama bin Laden, the founder of Al Qaeda, a global militant Islamic group that launched a series of suicide attacks against the U.S. that is more commonly referred to as 9/11. After this tragic event, former President George W. Bush announced that bin Laden would be caught dead or alive and the War on Terrorism overseas began. When President Barack Obama entered office, the capture of bin Laden was one of his top priorities and under his command a U.S. military raid called Operation Neptune Spear was authorized. In this raid, bin Laden was found in his Pakistani hideout and killed. Although locating bin Laden was an outstanding feat for the U.S. government, murdering him immediately was an impetuous act. Royal Distractions in the Media

Austin Kong A & E Editor On April 29, 2011, the single greatest event in history of England was aired live on every television set in Great Britain. That fateful day marked the royal wedding of Catherine Middleton and Prince William of England. People brought their entire families from all over England, broke bread, and feasted in front of the royal gates. It is very fortunate that the rest of the world was given the opportunity to view this event with minimal effort. Thankfully, the trivial and far less signicant stories that tried to overshadow the wedding were ignored by reputable media outlets while Middleton was walking down the aisle. News stations in the United States need to continue reporting events like the Royal Wedding rather than burdening audiences with stress-inducing news stories. While the wedding bells were humming through the streets of Buckingham Palace, citizens of the U.S. found it incredibly easy to nd a channel that was broadcasting the wedding. Instead of reporting on an extremely useless invasion of Syrian troops onto Dara, Syria, the U.S. recognized that human rights are far less important than the royal wedding. Media stations are nally realizing that royalty was established long before any human rights were enacted. Another event that lost its place to the undeniable importance of the royal wedding was a terrorist plot by the Taliban that caused 500 terrorist leaders to escape from a prison in Afghanistan. Although this may be impressive at rst, the 500 leaders could not possible compete with the 500,000 citizens who attended the royal couples first balcony appearance. For the past 10 years, the U.S. has constantly been fighting the War on Terrorism overseas thus making its military perfectly capable of putting this matter to rest within a couple of days. People do not want to be bothered with trivial happenings. Royal weddings, however, happen only once a lifetime. While Prince William was walking down the aisle during the

His death will eventually lead to further causalities to U.S. armed forces overseas along with more distrust in the Middle East. The U.S. is occupying the Middle East in an effort to stabilize the economic and political conditions there, but his death will cause a gradual disturbance in the Middle East that could prove to be counterproductive. Even if leaving bin Laden alive would have been dangerous, it would provide the U.S. with leverage to negotiate a cease re with the Al Qaeda. Bin Laden should have been apprehended; his death does not provide any closure in the Middle East, instead his death will kindle more trouble for the U.S. than capturing him would have. Bin Ladens death was abrupt and will require more effort, lives, and money to settle the conicts that will arise as a result of his death. Capturing bin Laden would have instead given the U.S. more time and options to deal with problems that have started from bin Laden.

Single and Ready to Mingle

Austin Kong A&E Editor Hearts all over the world broke in unison as Prince William of England tied the knot with Catherine Middleton this past April. Although he is now unavailable, do not give up hope! If you are looking for that happily ever after, you still have a few choices left. Here are some of the most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes left in the royal family ready for you to sweep them of their feet. Elizabeth Lee Former Editor-in-Chief Former News Editor When I started high school, I never would have expected to become the person I am now. Though I am nowhere near where I thought I would be (and nowhere near where my peers and parents think I should be), I know that I am happy. I realized that though I may not have achieved what I had hoped and planned to accomplish, I have gained so much more than I could have ever imagined. It was on this campus that I met some of the most amazing people in the world, and one of my only regrets about high school is that I did not spend more time with these beautiful human beings. But high school is only four years of your life, and you should not dwell on something so insignicant and trivial right? That was what I used to think. I wanted high school to be over, to get out of this city and break away from familiar faces to encounter something new and spectacular. As senior year is drawing to an end, I am realizing that though high school is not and will not be the most important time of your life, it is still a memory that every teenager should have the chance to keep for the rest of their lives. Appreciate what you have. That was the attitude that I had developed in high school about everything but high school. I appreciated all the situations that I had been put in and all the obstacles I had to overcome in my life, but I did not appreciate high school. Even as I was starting senior year in 2010, I still held to my belief that high school was just a huge waste of time and effort. Now that I am almost nished with my life here, I can nally see that I did not appreciate high school enough. I did not cherish the time I had with my teachers and my peers, and I did not make high school a time worth remembering. While it is too late for me to change this and too pointless for me to dwell on this regret, all I can do is give those who still have time left a piece of advice: make cherishable memories. Angie Zhang Asst. Feature Editor Have you ever eaten a pancake? Well, of course you have. Now, have you ever eaten a GIANT pancake? One that was longer than twice the length of you palms? One that could easily feed four hungry people? One that you had to put in a pizza box to take home? This is exactly what I encountered when I went to the Guasti Homestyle Caf in Chino, California. This past Mothers Day, I decided that instead of our traditional dinner, my family and I would go eat breakfast to my elbow, and they were all completely filled with food. I ordered the pancake combo, and the pancakes were literally the same size of a medium pizza. My moms omelet basically took up half of her huge plate, with the other half was filled with fried potato slices. It also came with a separate dish of biscuits and gravy. My dad ordered the Chilaguiles, a Mexican dish that contains nachos, rice, and beans. We could barely nish any of our food and ended up taking most of it home.

Looking to lose a little weight before the swimsuit season? Taking off some of those extra pounds might tempt you to start depriving yourself of food, which is very unhealthy, but luckily for you, we have two healthy and ingenious ideas to help you get your desired gureand fast! With all the end of the year activities, it feels like there is no time left in the day, yet all Brahmas seem to have weight loss on their minds. In order to prove to students that starving themselves is not the answer to weight loss, I decided to work off the weight. By working out for 20 minutes a day, I showed that it is possible to drop weight and have the energy needed to complete everything on your schedule. In just seven days I lost ve pounds by doing simple exercises each day. At rst I thought that exercising each day would take a lot of effort, especially with so many other things that I had to do in the day. It was overwhelming to imagine cramming another activity into my already overowing schedule. For the beginning of the week I focused on cardiovascular activity and ran a mile each day for two days. Just by running a little every day I felt refreshed and already seemed to be more awake during my classes; I even began looking forward to exercising. After two days of cardio, I turned my attention to strength training, which I was terried to attempt. I started by bench-pressing, the most intimidating of the strength training exercises, as well as doing pull ups and lifting weights. It was difcult for me to do these exercises because I had never attempting any muscle building activities prior to this. I began to see results immediately and felt stronger each day. As my strength built I had more and more energy, and at the same time I felt more condent because I was losing weight. Not only did I lose weight, but my arms were more toned and my stomach seemed rmer. Finally, I did one last day of cardio to end the week. I was able to run faster and further because my body was in better shape. I was not as tired after working out and felt like I had accomplished something. As a result of the strength training that I did throughout the week, I dropped even more weight while gaining lean muscle. Even though I did not change anything with my diet, I was still able to lose weight during the end of the year rush. I was also able to drop the pounds without losing any energy or focus by simply getting up and moving for 20 minutes each day. Modern society often reminds us that we need a quick x for everything. So, why not participate in a one-week diet right before Prom? I decided to see how effective these miracle diets can be by experimenting with a fruit detox. I was to consume only fruit and drink water or 100 percent fruit juice for a full seven days. I had to stay away from dairy, sugar, carbohydrates, and, oddly, too much physical activity. This is very different from starving oneself because the diet specically mentions to keep eating the fruit until no longer hungry (this sometimes meant eating continuously for long periods of times since I am often left hungry). I began my endeavors on Thursday, May 5 and by the time I nished on Wednesday, May 12, I lost a total of six pounds in seven days. It was undeniably one of the most difcult challenges I had ever overcome, as I have never tried dieting before. What made it even trickier was that I had to avoid temptations presented by Cinco de Mayo festivities and Mothers Day meals. This is in addition to the additional desires of going out to eat with friends and taking food out of my refrigerator or food cabinet. My daily routine consisted of drinking eight glasses of water, two glasses of fruit juice, an average of one and a half fruit smoothies, and snacking on various fruits. I ate mostly strawberries, pineapples, apples, pears, and tangerines. When I went to make a smoothie, I combined all of the fruit with orange juice and ice. Though it does not seem like enough food to consume throughout one whole day, I was often pleased to find myself a lot less hungry than I expected to be. During the experiment, I started to notice the numbers drop on the scale and my energy level increase everyday. My experience with detoxing taught me many valuable lessons. I learned a lot about my selfdiscipline and my limitations. On the other hand, I do not think I will ever be able to repeat the same self-control with such a strict diet again because it became quite difcult to maintain after a while. *Disclaimer: I had a hot dog while attending an Angels game on Mothers Day.

to celebrate. We arrived at the Guasti Caf expecting to be seated within ten minutes. However, there was a huge number of people waiting outside the door. I was not sure whether it was always this crowded or if it was just because it was Mothers Day, but our wait was about 30 minutes long. Although there were a lot of people, the service of the restaurant was surprisingly quick. Two minutes after we sat down, a waitress came over to ask what we wanted to drink. Our order took around 25 minutes to come out, but when I saw the dish, I understood why. Each plates diameter was around the length of my hand

The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was very relaxed and friendly and the staff was very easy to talk to. The food was pretty average, it tasted pretty similar to the breakfast served at Dennys and was your typical homestyle breakfast, simple and not overly fancy. Although the price was a little towards the high side, considering the size of each serving, it was still pretty reasonable. The serving sizes at this restaurant are really oversized, so plan on coming with your friends or maybe fasting before you come here! You are bound to walk away so full, you will not have to eat anything else for the rest of the day!

Andrew John Former Editor-in-Chief Former Sports Editor Hakuna matata. What a wonderful phrase! Though having completely no worries is obviously impossible in the world we live in today, I always like to think that not adding additional worry to ones life is healthy. I dont think there is any point in stressing out. I mean, you can worry about something, but there is no reason to keep panicking and complaining about something stressful. Life is a lot happier that way. Senior year has been quite the experience. I can denitely understand why everyone loves being a senior. This year, my greatest struggle was not with college applications, or grades. The biggest thing I struggled with was pride. At times, pride can be healthy, like the pride I have for being part of the best class ever, while in other instances, it can be severely detrimental, like the pride that comes with boasting. Unfortunately, I am guilty of having the more unpleasant sort. There is a very fine line between pride and arrogance. I believe I was foolish enough to cross that line. Like almost all seniors, I procrastinated heavily on apps. Nevertheless, I felt confident in what I did. However, I let my pride blind me. I thought that my rsum was strong. I thought that I could be special and forego taking a visual performing art. I thought that I would get into a strong enough college so I would not regret never taking a VPA. In thinking all of this, I was arrogantand wrong. But now, as I reect, I realize that college was never the goal, so there is absolutely no reason for me to worry about what school I attend. I can make the most of any circumstances I fall under, just as I have in high school. I just cant get cocky, which brings me to my next point: humility. Humility is awesome. If I have ever emitted any sense of arrogance to you (like to you, Lea!), Im sorry. Humility is a virtue I hope to attain in everything I do, for with humility comes gratitude. Especially after being humbled in Kenya last summer, I think I have become a much more appreciative person. Now, I love showers. I love paved streets. I love having an education. I love having a sack lunch everyday (thanks to my awesome mom!). I love having an awesome brother and sister. I love knowing awesome people. Thank you to my awesome teachers. Thank you to all my awesome friends (shout out to Jessica Pan! for knowing that I was writing a senior column). A Year of Change
Rachel Halpert Asst. Sports Editor The switch from the Sierra League to the Hacienda League in 2010-2011 had a remarkable impact on the Diamond Bar High School sports teams. It made for better competition and more successful seasons for nearly every team. The DBHS girls soccer program made a name for itself in 2011 by making a complete transformation from the previous year. Coming off of a 1-7 season, the team knew that the league change would be beneficial. The program also underwent coaching changes when Matt Brummett took over the head coaching position. The competition leveled out and Diamond Bar took third in league with a record of 8-3. The change in league was not the sole reason for the astounding improvement this year. With all of the improvements the team made, it would have done better in any league it was placed in. Similarly, the swim teams assistant coach, Patrick Murphy, became the head coach for the 2011 season. This along with the league change resulted in a 5-1 season after a 2-4 season in 2010. Where last year the members would grow more distant with each defeat, the opposite occurred this year; the team grew closer together with each victory. The bond of the team members developed so much that after the loss against Walnut, they still remained supportive. The competition was not as strong as previous seasons, but the boost in morale led to more confidence in their ability to win. With all of the success, several swimmers were able to qualify for California Interscholastic Federation and even Masters. Out of all of the sports on campus, softball has had the biggest turn-around compared to any other team. The team went from a 0-10 record in 2010 to a winning record of 10-2 and Hacienda League Co-Champions with Bonita High School. Though CIF is unfamiliar territory to the DBHS softball program, the Lady Brahmas have proven themselves throughout league play to be solid competitors. While most teams saw improvement from seasons in the past, several of the already excellent Diamond Bar sports teams remained triumphant and therefore were unaffected by the change in league. Both girls and boys golf had incredibly successful seasons. The girls golf came into the Hacienda League from last years Montview League, but dominated both leagues equally with back-to-back undefeated seasons. The boys also took first place two years in a row with a 9-1 record last year and a 12-0 record this year. This just proves the Brahmas can be successful in any league they are placed in. The cross country, girls tennis, wrestling, badminton, boys tennis, and track and field team were also able to maintain their success level even through the changes. The only different aspect for those teams was the competition it faced. We were very excited about the natural rivalries and about the equity within the league. Sixteen of the 17 sports made CIF, and by that aspect, it was the most successful year in Diamond Bar history, said Athletic Director Kurt Davies.

Senior Maggie Yang accepted a scholarship to William Penn University for her achievements in golf. She played four years on the varsity team and reached the California Inter-scholastic Federation Individual Championships her junior and senior year. As team captain, Yang led the Lady Brahmas to an undefeated season in 2010. She is currently listed in the Brahma Hall of Fame. Although she has not made her decision yet, Yang is leaning towards majoring in Environmental Science.

their particular school by their junior year. Munoz, brought up to varsity as a sophomore, played first base and some third base. Last season, he was constantly moved between the two positions. At UCI, Munoz will most likely be moved back to his original position at first base or possibly the outfield. The two of them have also received scholarship offers from several different schools and even Major League Baseball teams. Munoz has decided to major in Criminal Justice at UCI but Mathews is registered as undecided.
